Mounjaro / Wegovy with > 5st / 30kg to lose

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 26/04/2024 08:41

I know, yet another Mounjaro / Wegovy thread, but I wondered if anyone else with a lot to lose would be interested in a safe space to chat. The other threads (both the long-runner and the newbies) are great but I can’t believe how relatively little some people have to lose. I know it’s all relative, and two stone can be a lot of extra weight on a small frame, and it’s great that they are doing something for their health before they end up in the same position as me… but in my more ungenerous moments I think about what a dream it would be to be ‘only’ two stone overweight, and wonder how many posters I will see come and go while I plod along.

So, if any of that resonates and you don’t think I’m an utter cow for having these thoughts, come and chat! I will start. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my current weight but am happy to say that my starting BMI is over 40 and I have 7.5 stone / 47 kg to lose. I’m very tall but there’s no kidding myself that my current situation isn't very unhealthy indeed.

I’m halfway through my second week on 2.5mg Mounjaro and so far I have lost 8lb. I have not really had many side effects apart from occasional loose stools, but I am also not experiencing the significant appetite suppression that others describe. Right now I am finding MJ a useful tool to take the edge off while I count calories and keep an eye on my macros to keep my protein intake up. A very welcome effect is that it has completely removed any desire to drink alcohol, which is helpful as a fondness for wine is part of how I got so fat in the first place. Nevertheless I am looking forward to moving up to 5mg and hopefully experiencing more appetite suppression.

Anyone else?

Does anyone use or know of a free and easy way of charting their weights to see an overall decline? (Hopefully)

Also debating whether to weigh more or less often 🤔 any thoughts on the pros and cons of both?

My losses are still very small, and my weight seems to go down then slowly up, then a small jump down, then creep up again... very frustrating!!

I use the Fitbit app - I don’t think you have to have a Fitbit device as you can enter your data manually - and I have used My Fitness Pal in the past. Both will plot a line graph of your weight over time for you.

@LeafUsAlone I weigh myself every day, as I find it takes the pressure and emotion off. It makes me feel better seeing how my weight fluctuates, especially when it's "illogical" (eg I've had a good day the day before but my weight has gone up a little). Then if it's a bad result on official weighing day, I don't feel as bad.

LeafUsAlone · 30/05/2024 17:09

@VelociraptorsVelociRapping thank you, I'll have a look at them both!

@ClonedSquare I can see the logic in doing it this way - so long as I do take it the same way as you and dont become obsessed!

I use the Happy Scale app. It shows trends and also predictions, which I like.

Oh crikey, I just got the dispatch notification and it's arriving tomorrow.

Currently debating whether to take it on Friday afternoon (longer to recover before I next have to go to the office and I just want to get on with it) or Saturday afternoon (I have a hair appointment on Saturday morning and I don't really want to be feeling ill for that).

Knowing myself (poor impulse control) I will end up doing it on Friday and just take some Imodium if I need to on Saturday morning.

Fingers crossed for minimal side effects and a smooth start!

I do exactly this and use a free weight tracking app called Weight Diary. It isn't the best I've used, but I've used a lot and they all had data stored and I wanted a fresh start!
Also why I weigh in kg as I'm not emotionally attached to them. My last big loss (that I regained, obviously) I was weighing in pounds (and the one before that was stone and pounds, so this is my last chance as I've run out of available measurements!).

RagzRebooted · 30/05/2024 20:48

@thebigmove21 I'd get the 10mg so you have the option to do smaller doses if you want, but can go up if you decide you need to.
Officially a stall is 4 weeks with no weight loss, so a few weeks in a row doesn't mean it isn't working, though I understand the frustration especially when it's expensive! If you're still feeling appetite suppression and getting full quicker and able to keep your calories down enough, I'd stay on the current dose.

I'm on week 10 and only just done my first full dose of 5mg. I've had a week I stayed the same and a few weeks losing only a pound, but overall down 24lbs.
How much have you lost overall, despite the plateau in the middle?

Thank you this is so helpful. I think I will get the 10mg. I think it was about 3/4 weeks of no weight loss and I was definitely still feeling the appetite suppression etc. Since end of March I have lost just over 1.5 stone so overall I am happy just as you said it’s expensive and I got spoilt at the beginning because it dropped off in the first month!

I inject on a Friday and have changed jobs recently to work on the weekend but it’s been fine for me - a little bit of heart burn, teeth grinding or tiredness - then sometimes on the third day I can feel exhausted and/or a bit of constipation/diarrhoea. Each week has been different for me.

Good luck 🤞

Eminybob · 30/05/2024 23:02

Can I have some advice please, I am on my second week of 5mg and am ill again, it seems to kick in a day or 2 after the injection and has only been since starting 5mg. Only lasted a night last week and I'm going through it again now. But oh my god I feel so ill. Throwing up, stomach pains, wind, bloating. I'm not sure I can take it any more. Is this normal? Will it happen every week? Should I consider going back to 2.5 for a while?

oreo2024 · 31/05/2024 07:53

Today is my 2 weeks on MJ 2.5my check in. I've lost 2.4kg in the week and total of 4.4kg in 2 weeks, now at 103.9kg. These numbers are surreal. I am over the moln though know this is not sustainable though, and now probably will go and have a breakfast that will put me 0.5kg back on Grin
No side effects on MJ, I am still very much constantly hungry but feel a little more in control, my calorie target is 1500, so not that tiny, but I do a lot of cardio (cycling) and defo eat more post cardio though try not to go over 2000.
Finally my mini goal to be in double digits of weight seems achievable.
I inject on Fridays btw.

Is there room for another newbie on this thread? I have a lot of weight to lose and a few health issues. I know I need to do this, but I am finding the options overwhelming. Is there a simple guide to the options? Do I need to know what I want before I contact the online pharmacies?

omega4ever · 31/05/2024 08:05

Well done @oreo2024 great update. you are doing so well , especially without much appetite suppression. Hope that will come for you soon or as you increase dose maybe. The control around food is great isnt it!

oreo2024 · 31/05/2024 08:23

@NotALightPacker sure, welcome welcome!

oreo2024 · 31/05/2024 08:39

@NotALightPacker there is another thread called 'Continuing Mounjaro ...' which will give you the details on how to use and order in the first post.
@omega4ever thank you 🙏 this teaches me it will never be easy so I just need to get on anyway.

Your main choice is wegovy vs mounjaro- do your own research. There are health indicators for both which would prevent prescription. Once you have decided on drug of choice research prices- and look at total cost. Those which offer initial discounts charge higher prices for the increased doses- where you will spend most of your time. The lower doses will give weight loss but are really for body to get used to the drug.

anecdotally I think MJ has fewer side effects and better weight loss progression.

for the health screening u do need to be honest about pre existing conditions, take photos of your body and the weigh scales. And be above BMI 30 if no health issues.

Good luck

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 31/05/2024 09:59

Weigh in done for this week and although I've put on a pound since yesterday, I've hit my goal of 12st 7lb for my 40th and holiday next week. That's a total of 3st 4lb 8oz.
This is my last weigh in before I go and I'm not checking my weight while I'm away.

My bmi is now 30.5 (down from 40) so I'll soon be overweight, not obese. I'm sub 80kg which is great given that I was in 3 figures when I started MJ and I've lost 21% of my body weight since February. I haven't seen this weight since January 2016 and that was only briefly.

KeepingUndercover · 31/05/2024 10:00

I'm having an interesting week. Gone up to 7.5mg, which has been fine. Bit burpy on day 2 but took some acid reflux medication and felt better. I'm glad after 5mg hit me like a ton of bricks.

I've been thinking about food quite a lot. Last night I just really wanted to sit on the sofa and eat a big bag of maltesers that are in the cupboard. One of the first times I've had a serious desire to do this since I started. However, I knew I was still full from dinner and I knew that I'd probably eat a few and then be done. Rather than test that theory I thought about why I wanted to eat if I wasn't hungry and decided to ignore my brain. Had a peppermint tea and put the thought out of my mind.

It felt like a good exercise in willpower and I'm quite glad the urge came through for a bit so I could work on it.

I'm still feeling a bit "why have I lost so much weight and yet still look so fat". Which is why I'm glad of this thread full of people who also have lots to lose and get what's that like! Payday has arrived and I think I will try to find something to buy in a smaller size so the loss feels a bit more real. The jeans I wore all the time before this are massive on the waist now. Although disappointingly still fit quite well on the thighs so I don't get the "wow these are hanging off me" effect. My thighs are definitely in a different dress size bracket to my waist and always have been!

KeepingUndercover · 31/05/2024 10:01

You've made such great progress @PissedOffNeighbour22, enjoy your holiday!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 31/05/2024 10:31

@PissedOffNeighbour22
Great progress

@KeepingUndercover
It’s interesting how much of our behaviour is habit and emotion not hunger.

Genuinely surprised at the level of appetite suppression I have today given I did my first 2.5 MJ injection yesterday.
I had half a bottle of huel for breakfast just to get some calories and protein. Otherwise just water and black coffee. I want to start building up exercise from next week so I preserve muscle mass. I am also keeping a journal so I can see what feelings bubble up as I go through the process.

I had mild itching at the injection site about an hour later but this is a common side effect. An antihistamine solved it.

Ghilliedu · 31/05/2024 10:40

@Eminybob I had the same issues as you when moving up. I was so ill! I chatted to a pharmacist at med express and they suggested going back down to 2.5mg for a bit. I’ve actually been counting the clicks and injecting roughly 3mg which seems to be the highest dose I can handle before I start being really sick. I might change my injection site too and see if that helps

KeepingUndercover · 31/05/2024 10:51

@Eminybob I found the increase to 5mg really hard and had a lot of nausea, sulfur burps, etc. It did slowly get better week by week and by the end of the pen I was ok again. It was rough though and if I'd had to leave the house to work I would probably have done a lower dose.

omega4ever · 31/05/2024 10:52

@PissedOffNeighbour22 amazing progress. Well done and have a great holiday.
