Mounjaro / Wegovy with > 5st / 30kg to lose

I know, yet another Mounjaro / Wegovy thread, but I wondered if anyone else with a lot to lose would be interested in a safe space to chat. The other threads (both the long-runner and the newbies) are great but I can’t believe how relatively little some people have to lose. I know it’s all relative, and two stone can be a lot of extra weight on a small frame, and it’s great that they are doing something for their health before they end up in the same position as me… but in my more ungenerous moments I think about what a dream it would be to be ‘only’ two stone overweight, and wonder how many posters I will see come and go while I plod along.

So, if any of that resonates and you don’t think I’m an utter cow for having these thoughts, come and chat! I will start. I don’t feel comfortable sharing my current weight but am happy to say that my starting BMI is over 40 and I have 7.5 stone / 47 kg to lose. I’m very tall but there’s no kidding myself that my current situation isn't very unhealthy indeed.

I’m halfway through my second week on 2.5mg Mounjaro and so far I have lost 8lb. I have not really had many side effects apart from occasional loose stools, but I am also not experiencing the significant appetite suppression that others describe. Right now I am finding MJ a useful tool to take the edge off while I count calories and keep an eye on my macros to keep my protein intake up. A very welcome effect is that it has completely removed any desire to drink alcohol, which is helpful as a fondness for wine is part of how I got so fat in the first place. Nevertheless I am looking forward to moving up to 5mg and hopefully experiencing more appetite suppression.

Anyone else?

I'm considering doing a 1mg jab this week instead of my last 0.5 - is this a bad idea? I did an extra week at 0.25 and felt it wearing off the last bit, and havent had many side effects so far on 0.5 apart from tiredness. I could do a 0.75 dose instead? I'm keen to get things moving though

Pops1985 · 15/05/2024 19:50

It’s been a month today for me. It’s been revolutionary but also feel like I’m ready to move up to 5mg. Monthly total is 18lbs, it’s a great amount but as I have so much to lose I think I was hoping for 20. We’re never happy are we! Did spend last week away for work and while I did lots of walking I did drink alcohol for the first time which is such empty calories. Moving up to 5mg on Sunday and excited for a bit more appetite suppression and energy to get my arse moving more!

That's a great loss for a month!

Day 13 for me and I've lost 15lb which is amazing

No side effects but really struggling to eat and need to try and eat more. Relying on milkshakes and soup at the moment. Not much energy but that will be the lack of calories which I am going to try an increase and focus on protein

Crouton19 · 15/05/2024 21:47

I think the effect might already be wearing off for me. I definitely had an appetite today, and had a handful (yep just a handful) of crisps and much more halloumi than was necessary. I'm not weighing in until Saturday morning so hopefully will be back in the right mindset by then.

Omg that's fantastic! After initially dipping to a lose of 7lb I've managed to eat, I'm on day 13 and I've lost 5.2lb altogether but not following a strict diet as I have several days a week that I just cannot eat at all!

Not sure about this.

Your next dose (If MJ)would be 0.75 so why overstep to 1.0? The worse side effects I had were the step up and I ended up in bed for a day. I took a mid week dose (4 days after) to use up the ‘bonus’ dose- full 0.25mg -and thought as it does wear off at end of week it would be ok. It wasn’t. Although I slipped my jab day so also 4 days apart for the 0.5mg dose, effectively that week my body got 0.75mg from 0.25mg start dose. It hit hard and I experienced ALL the side effects.

next time I will use bonus dose as the fifth week which makes it cheaper and go up to 0.75 as per instructions. If that still gives me problems I am minded at each dose increase to try graduating first and last doses ie week 1 75% dose/week 2 100%/week3 100%/ week 4 100%/ week 5 125% to ramp up dosing more as I move up the levels.

As Asda don’t charge any more for the 10mg pens I am keen to get to that dose level as quickly as possible and I may just stay there if I continue to achieve weight loss (14kg after 5weeks).

ClonedSquare · 16/05/2024 07:43

Did my first week weigh in and I'm down 5.5lbs. Very happy with that, considering it was my birthday so several days included cake and eating out. Hoping to combine it with a proper diet mindset this week to continue losing well 😁

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 16/05/2024 08:40

Thank you for your kind words @KeepingUndercover and @Sunshineandrainbow. The nausea is still kicking my arse this morning. I've had to force down a coffee with some sugar to have the energy to get moving!

I should have mentioned, Im on ozempic so my prescribed move is from 0.5 to 1mg. I am expecting it to hit hard though, but as I basically haven't lost any weight I'm willing to bring it forward a week!

I can't remember if I said this on this thread or another one, but:

Taking mounjaro has been amazing because it's made me realise that being fat isn't entirely my fault. Have I contributed to it? Obviously. But the fact that I can have one injection and my whole mental attitude about food and my literal physical hunger change...that says to me that actually I did/do have a biological, medical reason for being fatter than other people. It isn't solely due to lack of physical movement or bad food choices (although they play a part).

If I'd lived my whole life just not fancying junk food or feeling hungry as soon as I wake up in the morning, I doubt I'd be the weight I am now. I literally had no idea people could be this disinterested in food. And no, I'm not just too nauseous to eat, I just don't fancy it.

It's much easier to have "willpower" when you're turning down something you're not arsed about. Very different when you spend hours craving it.

I am a bit late to this thread but so happy I've found it! I'm currently on 1.7mg of Wegovy (have followed the dosing stages) and am currently 2.5 stone down. From my starting weight I have 7 stone to lose, so very happy with my progress so far. This drug has been life changing for me!

GreenGooner · 16/05/2024 14:19

Day 4 for me. I feel like today my appetite has finally suppressed. I wasn't sure it was going to happen on this dose, but here we are.

Feel a bit strange. I still feel like I mentally want to eat out of habit, but my body is saying no. I just don't fancy anything.

It's the first day I've noticed any side effects, feel a little woozy but nothing too severe.

Interested to see how long this lasts.

Stuckinarut79 · 16/05/2024 15:15

My prescription has been approved- had a few issues as I have no “acceptable id” but Asda sorted me out!
Ive a lot too loose but would be happy with 5 stone. I’d still be obese but a good starting place. I’ve never been thin so more than that is an alien concept.
I’ve been doing noom but struggling to stay within the calories so hoping the injection alongside that will help me do it in a sensible and sustainable way.
I’m getting to the point where I worry about keeling over and I just fail at everything I’ve tried so really hoping this works.

Menora · 17/05/2024 09:35

An interesting chat today with a slim colleague. Shes always been slim, she asked me how I was getting on with weight loss (as I’ve lost so much) and during our chat I said well I feel like I will have to calorie count forever. She said yes, you do, it sucks. She mentally counts her calories every day. She is naturally quite slim but she actively watches what she eats and works out specifically to stay slim. I think it’s a big myth thin people do not like food or think about food.

I don’t believe in willpower, it’s motivation. My colleague and I are currently motivated to be a healthy weight so we make a sacrifice of food to do so. I used to like to eat crisps and chocolate every day, I never minded what I was eating and didn’t pay any attention to my intake. Now I am. I still think about food a lot and I know I like it, so for me staying at a healthy weight isn’t about not liking food or caring about it.

The thing about motivation is that it needs to see a result to keep going so often you give up when things get hard or you feel like you aren’t seeing a result. I believe the reason I put all my weight back on after losing it 10 years ago was that I didn’t have any other coping mechanisms to deal with stress or rewarding myself than the enjoyment and release of over eating. My colleague uses exercise to manage stress and has different rewards, not food. So to not fall back into the stress/food relationship I needed to find another way to reward myself or manage feelings of stress

ClonedSquare · 17/05/2024 10:36

@Menora I don't think anyone is claiming that thin people don't like food, or that they don't have to put some effort into staying thin. Or even that they don't get cravings they have to turn down.

The thing we're saying is different is the level and intensity of the cravings. Maybe your situation is different to mine, but I literally spent all my time thinking about food. I craved things constantly. I also was physically hungry constantly at times that didn't make sense. Mounjaro has stopped that dead. So clearly it was a biological thing and nothing to do with motivation or willpower.

I also felt like that which is why I tried ozempic as I was 5st overweight. I wouldn’t think twice about eating the moment I was hungry and I was hungry a lot.

The only point I am making is that I do still feel it is down to making conscious choices and even if you are no longer overweight or haven’t been overweight, it isn’t that it’s actually easier for them it’s just different. Everyone has different motivations and things they get enjoyment from. I still enjoy/think about food pretty much all the time, it’s not gone away. I just have had more practice controlling urges and changing my habits a year down the line and talking to myself about the consequences of eating things that will throw me off track

You will have cravings if you have been eating a diet full of UPF’s for a long time this is how they are designed to work, to trap you into wanting more and more and not getting satisfaction from being full. Once you stop eating them the appeal can significantly lessen and you start to realise how not that great they taste. Your taste buds do change and you get far less satisfaction from eating them, I will use a dominos pizza as an example. Once one of the nicest things I could once eat, it now just tastes really salty, fake and just has one flavour to it (you can’t differentiate any different flavours at all)

I think for me I am sure I do have a genetic predisposition to be addicted to dopamine and endorphins, much like smoking/drinking, I am prone to addictions. Food was my addiction

GreatGateauxsby · 17/05/2024 15:25

I agree it’s conscious choices and I definitely recognise “ what’s the point of not eating it I’m already the size of a house”

the problem I have is when slim I think “I can afford a little treat” arghhhh

in other news have lost a kilo and am now 90.5kg so threatening to break into the 80s this week 🥳

Stuckinarut79 · 18/05/2024 08:25

My first dose arrived yesterday but having bought it on payday I’m wary of not being able to afford to reorder just before next payday so trying to leave it a bit, but I’m so eager to get going! Reading day three is tough helped as Monday is office day in an ideal world I’d wait till Thursday to take the first dose but… last night I was full from dinner but had a chocolate splurge, I’m sure it was I won’t be able to do this soon so I’ll do it now thinking, but it’s madness to put on the first weeks loss the week before.
but also my concern I have never had control over food, I use it to numb out emotions, last night I wasn’t hungry, slightly uncomfortable from a large dinner but still I ate a huge bar of chocolate- it’s made me nervous it won’t work for me, that it’s not just feeling hungry that effects my food choices.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 18/05/2024 09:48

@Stuckinarut79 not sure which medication you're on, but if you're on Mounjaro there is a 'spare' dose in the pen if you're happy to use a syringe to get it out and inject it. Certainly helps with the cost.

I’d seen this, and that’s my plan so I get the five doses each month, just need to work it out. I thought I just needed an extra needle but will look into this more.

In my experience, I've just taken my 12th dose, it's not just about being hungry, I've found that MJ stops me even thinking about food. It was about halfway through my third week that I suddenly stopped craving or working out what I was going to eat next. Prior to that food was on my mind ALL the time. So it's not a case of just not feeling hungry, it's completely changed the way I think.

I'm a slow loser so it's taken me 11 weeks to lose 16lb, but after years and years of trying really hard on every diet you can imagine I'm finally hopeful and positive.

If you use the bonus fifth dose then the pen will last five weeks so should make it possible to order when you next get paid.

Hope it goes well for you.
