Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

I'm going to follow the farmers almanac. Who knows. Might be more accurate.

Some folks are getting a good light show.

There might be some merit to that ~ I've been delving into the record books (and my memory!) and had a quick look to see what the winters were like following hot summers and the 1976 winter had a wet autumn and then the winter/early months of1977 was very cold with snow.
The 2010 summer could be described as 'warm with some hot spells,' the winter that followed was very cold and snowy.

The summer/winter from records/memory where the farmers almanac doesn't really apply is the 2017 one. Summer 2017 was (according to the metoffice) 'wet and warmer than average but the winter that followed was unsettled and then became cold at the beginning of 2018. during which we had 'The Beast from the East in February 2018.

So we'll see what this winter brings....

As for today, we've had a good amount of rain overnight and most of the UK should see some rain today, with possibly a few rumbles of thunder as well.

I think the prolonged dry spell has broken the closest rain gauge 😂 It’s permanently stuck on 0.25mm. The one just outside the village says 11mm for yesterday which is much more realistic.

If we get a cm a day for the next few days I will be happy with that. It will dampen everything down without flooding.

I may have miscalculated when i decided to leave the coat at home. The rain at the moment could be described as torrential. Hopefully will stop before I need to get off the bus. ☂️

I got caught in the rain just now on en errand, and was hurrying along thinking, mustn’t complain, mustn’t complain! Even though I got soaked. It was quite novel!
The garden smells lovely and fresh. I am so glad it will dampen down all the fires.

We've had a good downpour as well ~ my weather station's registering 2.8mm of rain. It's the difference in temperature though that's noticeable after the last few days ~ it's a chilly 14.9C!

Netweather's issued a 'Thunderstorm Watch' and not forgetting the lightning map, just in case!

My three butts are almost full again. My lawn is sprouting new green bits among the crispy yellow straw. There are puddles. Normality is restored.

I’d like to say I won’t complain but if we get 7cm in 8hrs again and the village floods and the roof leaks I’m afraid I am quite likely to be complaining.

A few showers around today (a few of those might be thundery in places) before turning dry and most places will have a fairly decent weekend. Next week (and especially mid-week onwards), it's back to sunshine and showers...

As long as there's a balance I don't mind, and no stifling temperatures!! It definitely feels like the seasons are turning, late summer to autumn.

On a train down to Cornwall. Looking through the window as we go through south/west Devon and trying to work out why it looks odd. It’s because the fields are greenish. Which it definitely isn’t further east.

Leaves on the trees being greener and the trees being less droopy is giving it a much more summer like feel too.

How this year's very strong El Niño might affect our autumn and winter~ we could be in for a wet/stormy autumn...

It's been a lovely weekend here (although this morning started off at a chilly 8C)

The first few days of this week are looking fine and dry (temperatures for the midlands, maybe some southern areas of S. Wales southwards, could reach the mid-high 20s, Monday and Tuesday. Northern England/N. Wales and Scotland are probably looking at 15-20C over those two days.)

Tuesday evening, things start to change and showers (some of them could be thundery), start moving in from the S/SW. This continues over the following days through until the end of the week, with an increasing chance of rain/blustery showers and thunderstorms. So a bit of an unsettled week....

Thunderstorm warning has been issued for tomorrow by the metoffice...

Shame - DS off to Reading festival - after months of dry weather they have thunder and rain. Eek!!

As much as we need the rain, it's the wrong sort of rain!
The metoffice has added a thunderstorm warning for Thursday as well now and Netweather's got a thunderstorm watch that just covers tomorrow at the moment. But it does look like Thursday's the day for the 'proper' thundery stuff, starting in the early hours of the morning. The problem is that any torrential rain won't have a chance to soak in ~ the ground's still too much like concrete...

There's been a slight tweaking to the weather warnings this morning. There might be a few thunderstorms about today but I think storms are more likely tomorrow...

I suspect my "thunderstorm" will be two large rumbles and a squirt that a water spray bottle would be too embarrassed to do. I think it's been about two years since I had a decent one but that only involved a light show and five minutes of rain.

Although I do have this habit of tempting fate... 😬

We've got a few thundery looking clouds building and it's quite humid but I still think any activity will be early tomorrow morning/throughout the day ⛈

Those 11mm we had that day were very much needed but it doesn’t feel like we’ve had much more than that since. The trees are starting to look worse and whilst I appreciate it is almost autumn the leaves don’t normally start turning until late September here.

I woke up to big puddles this morning, so it obviously did rain overnight. It's been windy and a bit cloudy today, no rain but it feels muggy. I'm hoping for a thunderstorm, but even just some steady rain would be great.
