Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

I want a nice warm drizzle rain for a day to dampen the soill, followed by 3 days of hard rain.
that hopefully would allow farmers to bring in one more harvest of silage before winter.

There are signs that the high pressure is going to slowly slip away towards the middle of next week onwards ~ lower temperatures and some rain should finally be coming our way....

After thrashing around for half the night with a fan running woke up this morning to dark skies. At 10 we had some drizzle which petered out. Then at noon I went out and found it was mizzling. Very refreshing to walk in. It's so much cooler with a gentle breeze.

The weather is bonkers.

I was quite heartened to see this just now.

I don’t especially see the point of the alerts, it’s not like anyone will read it and rethink their fire starting plans because of it. The kind of people who start fires are not the same people who heed warnings.

BatshitCrazyWoman ~ things are a-changing (finally!) although the heat might hold on in the south/SE until the middle of next week before cooler temperatures arrive there. And when it comes to rain, it might not be enough to start with but even if it's the slightest bit of drizzle in the air, it's something!...

I had literally just tapped the card reader with Apple Pay in a busy london station and they went off. My thought was what have done why is my bank card giving out that sound I’ve done something really bad 🤣

Scared you we got it in Welsh the only thing most folks understood was 999 so they called it. Police issued statements later asking people to only call in an emergency 🦺

socks1107 ~ DD1 was at work in a theatre in Leicester when the alert went off, everyone's phone in the auditorium went off!

Still looks like temperatures are finally on a downward trend over the next week and rain is on the way...

Definitely fresher this morning here (right on the edge of London and Kent). The wind has moved round to a more northerly direction, which is lovely. Quite a bit of cloud, too. So far this morning, all good!

We've got 18C this morning with a nice breeze and cloudy as well. The sun will break through soon but just having the cloud and breeze is making things a lot more pleasant.

haha @justasking111 I got it in Welsh too, tried to scroll down for English but there was none; said to DS, must be about fires, because the word tân was repeated a few times. Then 10 mins later I got another one in English. That doesn’t make much sense does it!

Visited my parents, could smell smoke all day (near the Heads of the Valleys) though the smoky haze did clear by the end of the afternoon so maybe some of them are under better control now. I find the Welsh fires don’t get reported as much as the English ones, despite the five houses that burned to a crisp near Caerphilly the other day.

Was in the stadium for the athletics. Didn’t hear mine. But heard someone else’s. Then they kept going off all evening.

socks the banks should implement that. A siren that goes off when you are spending too much.

My current level of weather anxiety is set at "googling outdoor fire alarms". (They exist for building sites.). I live near a field.

Latest thoughts from Netweather ~ this paragraph will be 'music to the ears' for many....

In many areas of England in particular, it has been remarkably dry since around 15-20 June. It is now looking probable that the drought over large areas of England will be alleviated during the next 10 days, with some potentially substantial rain coming along. A depression is forecast to take quite a southerly track next Wednesday/Thursday. There will be some steady frontal rain moving south-eastwards through the country on Tuesday/Wednesday, followed by brighter conditions with showers.

I'm not sure the SW will see much rain and it looks like high pressure builds again next weekend but hopefully the rain that the GFS is forecasting, will arrive during next week.

Ukraine seems the densest fire pattern in Europe! (Prob not surprising..) and Germany seems to be having a hard time of it. Scary stuff to see so much.

Yes Germany looks like it's having a hard time, we hear about Greece and France but not much on Germany !
