Summer 2026 (1st June ~ start of meteorological Summer)

Yesterday (1st June) marked the start of meteorological summer (and the high temperatures last week were hot enough for some and enough to last the year!)

At the moment, the GFS thinks the first 10 days of June are looking unsettled and changeable, then slightly drier/warmer towards the end of next week but the unsettled theme still continues until the middle of the month.

Thoughts from Netweather (from a few days ago) and TheWeatherOutlook on what summer might have in store for us.

An early look ahead at what the UK summer may have in store

Ahead of the full summer forecast, an early look at what summer could have in store. One factor is a developing strong El Nino, which may have some influence.

27 degrees at 8pm, Metoffice app says 23… what a joke that forecast is. Yeah I know it’s probably the inside a Stevenson box thingy.
Roll on the rain band, can’t wait for it to come from the Atlantic.

I went for lunch with a friend and it went from ‘this is quite nice walking in the sun’ to ‘bloody hell it’s hot out here’ in the space of 2 hours.

29.6 is what ours had as a maximum today. It won’t have actually been that high, more like 28. But it definitely feels more like the days where the max temp has been high 20s not mid 20s ( which now feels like a cooler day this summer 😂)

Yep, 2pm today walking the wood was nice. But come 4pm the temp started climbing, not dropping.

It's got warmer here. too. Now 24 degrees at 9.30. Feels still and humid.

deeplybaffled · 17/08/2026 22:35

Raining quite steadily at the moment near Liverpool - hope it lasts overnight!

Pixiedust1234 · 17/08/2026 23:26

I've read on our local FB weather page that I might wake up to something mysterious and wet. I really, really hope so!

RedRiverShore6 · 18/08/2026 06:26

The ground was damp just now so I rushed to the rain gauge and was just over 2 millimetres, Northants, it was 28c here yesterday and still 24 in the evening which was hotter than forecast. I think we will get more rain tonight, isn't night rain better as it doesn't evaporate as quickly

GloriaSmud · 18/08/2026 06:41

RedRiverShore6 ~ nighttime rain is probably better for that reason.

We had proper rain around midnight, the ground is still damp and there are small puddles in the road. Looking at the metoffice forecast, we've got more to come today and over the next few days. But when I looked out around 6am and watched a car with headlights on go by and saw all the damp ground and leaves, it suddenly looked a very 'autumn morning' out there ~ a reminder that the year is moving on and we're heading towards a different season.

There are some little puddles here 😁🥳

JoanOgden · 18/08/2026 08:11

It has rained in London!!

Delatron · 18/08/2026 08:20

Well a tiny but of rain here in Bucks. Not sure it was on the forecast or whether I have just started ignoring the forecast! Does feel autumnal.

Pixiedust1234 · 18/08/2026 08:29

No rain!! 😭 They lied!! 😭

justasking111 · 18/08/2026 08:44

Dark, cool 17c, and breezy here. Think we'll get showers today. Thursday is our day for a drenching.

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/08/2026 09:36

There has been rain. Not enough to be measurable on the weather station yet. But the road outside looks damp. Come on rain, we need more,

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/08/2026 10:52

We have reached measurable rainfall!

If it keeps going with this very very light drizzle all day that would be perfect. Sadly the rain radar isn’t looking very promising.

GloriaSmud · 18/08/2026 11:22

Yay, Rafa ~ it must be a long time since that rain gauge measured anything!

I think the Netweather forecast for my area has gone a bit wrong ~ it's saying a minimum temperature of 5C, a maximum of 241C with a 3034% risk of precipitation and a 2588% risk of snow! 😆

Delatron · 18/08/2026 11:27

@GloriaSmud 😂 that risk of snow!! So funny/

Very humid here. Lots of black clouds but nothing falling. Misjudged my dog walking outfit. Thought my usual shorts and vest would be too cold. But didn’t need the thin layer I added.

RafaistheKingofClay · 18/08/2026 17:36

Time for my all time favourite weather video for you @GloriaSmud can’t believe this is 11 years old

0.25mm seem to be it for us. That’s the lowest amount that rain gauge measures. We did have 0.25 mm at some point last month. the last time we had over 1mm was 11th of June. There were a couple of days after that with 0.5ish but other wise that rain gauge has been unused for weeks 😂 Which is unusual for Devon.

Now clear blue skies and around 26 again. Feel like we might be back in heatwave territory if we ever came out of it. They are sort of merging into one.

GloriaSmud · 18/08/2026 18:35

@RafaistheKingofClay ~ oh gosh, I remember that one ~ it doesn't seem like 11 years old!

I don't think we've seen the sun at all today and although it's been humid, I don't think I've ever been so glad to not see it!

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/08/2026 02:11

Just woke to the most amazing sound. It’s chucking it down out there.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 19/08/2026 06:13

We had rain 🌧️ overnight too! Big puddles here this morning.

GloriaSmud · 19/08/2026 06:21

We've had rain as well. I think this is the sort of weather we needed after the hot summer ~ steady lighter rainfall for a few hours mixed in with some heavier bursts as well as drier periods to let it soak in.

OP posts:
HoraceCope · 19/08/2026 06:24

hardly any rain, but still a light drizzle

GloriaSmud · 19/08/2026 06:26

And the good news is that looking at the GFS, this pattern has set in for a few weeks as well, so there will be warm, dry weather but also rain as well...

Theseagullsarenowclouds · 19/08/2026 08:45

Finally light rain in North Hampshire.

InMySpareTime · 19/08/2026 17:27

My water butt is fuller than it’s been since about June. I sent DH a picture of the water level entitled “check out my juicy butt”, I think he might have been expecting a different image entirely 😂
