The start of meteorological Summer 2025 (1st June)

This weekend sees the start of meteorological summer.
Netweather haven't got their summer forecast yet but have some thoughts here on what sort of summer we might expect.

TheWeatherOutlook published their summer forecast a few weeks ago.

(I think that although we've had a dry spring, it'll be a 'mixed' summer of dry/warm (maybe hot days), mixed in with wet days. So we'll see......)

Unsettled start to June likely, but how may the rest of summer play out?

Ahead of the Netweather Summer 2025 forecast, we look at some the clues that point to how the summer may turn out after a likely unsettled start to June.

Southerly wind here in n Wales. Very warm. Storm Erin lurking off Ireland. We've yet to see if it batters us or heads north offshore

I normally don’t mind the heat but even I’ve had enough now. It’s very energy sapping! Thinks it’s cooler from tomorrow with some rain finally.

Gorgeous day here, little bit hazy just to take the edge off the heat. Usual sea breeze too.
Just cracking out the BBQ before the men go to the match

So an unsettled end to summer and head into meteorological Autumn...

Similar to last September then. With birthdays and wedding anniversary in September I remember Indian summers warm days and cool nights. Looking across the pond there are more hurricanes it seems so we're getting more fall out.

Thought we'd see the forecast rain today, but all there's been is two short and very light showers that didn't even register on the weather station. It's absolutely parched here and I was so bloody hoping for rain!

GloriaSmud · 27/08/2025 15:33

justasking111 ~ I think I'd like an 'Indian summer' sort of September but with a lot of rain (and only at night for that!) Everyone I talk to says that they've had enough of the heat/lack of rain now.

We had torrential stuff for about 10 minutes, around 1.30pm but that's been about it. Saturday looks like the day when the whole country is in for a proper soaking.

A heavy downpour here atm on the NE coast of England, but looking at the radar, it will be short and sweet although it looks like there are some more scattered throughout the evening. Hopefully enough to water my pots! I'm bloody done now after 5 months of dping two hours watering every night.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 27/08/2025 16:15

@RainbowZebraWarrior it feels like it's been going on all year, doesn't it.

I work in gardens and this year has been so disheartening, arriving at the garden of the day to find plants wilting and not enough watering done by the owners. No matter how many times I say 'The plants need a lot more water than you're giving them' it just doesn't get through with some people. Many seem to think that a cupful is enough, which is crazy. The ground is dry to a considerable depth, there's no moisture in the soil, at least not for the more shallow rooted plants.

If we get some decent rain in the coming days it will be such a relief but the deficit by now is huge.

I’m going to a summer party on Saturday. I know we need rain but the host is quite upset about the forecast after all the nice weather we’ve been having. It couldn’t last though!

Delatron · 27/08/2025 16:19

Sorry I realised how that sounds! We do desperately need lots of rain!!

Looking at some reservoir levels it's grim. 33% at two. If we get another dry winter we're in a right pickle

Autumn has definitely arrived with a bang here in Kent/london. Is chilly and wet and summer seems so long ago already!

Delatron · 29/08/2025 08:25

GloriaSmud · 29/08/2025 06:53

Delatron ~ that sort of situation makes you quite annoyed at the weather!

Although this has a lot about how the water situation is affecting canals and rivers, this blog entry from Netweather a few days ago contains information about the reservoir levels as well.

Thanks for the update @GloriaSmud
I wonder if it will be like the summer of 76 - a wet autumn/winter followed to fill up the reservoirs. After ridiculous drought conditions.

I know we had a good summer and we need the rain but I do miss sitting in the morning sun with my coffee. Hopefully we get some decent rain and then back to some September sunshine.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 29/08/2025 08:50

Woke up to gentle rain this morning and it was the most beautiful sound!

GloriaSmud · 29/08/2025 11:52

Delatron ~ it'll be interesting to see what the next two seasons will bring, especially as there isn't a clear signal either way when it comes to Autumn forecasts.

We've had a bit of rain this morning as well ~ DH's going to have another go at harvesting some potatoes this evening at the allotment. The last couple of attempts have been hard going because of the state of the ground!

Lots of rain this week. Hopefully the reservoirs are getting full up and the gardens are happy.

Would like a return to sun soon!

justasking111 · 02/09/2025 13:40

The news last night said the hottest summer on record. EH WHAT. 1976 doesn't count. I've been on the earth 68 years and remember hotter summers 😂

In Wales we've had a week of cooler weather. The dogs are happy now that the rain has returned, better for scents. Europe is tolerable now thankfully.

InMySpareTime · 02/09/2025 16:12

@justasking111 I saw a Met office video a while back that explained why it’s the hottest summer.
Previous summers have been hotter for short periods or in specific regions but this one has been hotter as a temperature average across the whole UK and the whole summer.
