The start of meteorological Summer 2025 (1st June)

This weekend sees the start of meteorological summer.
Netweather haven't got their summer forecast yet but have some thoughts here on what sort of summer we might expect.

TheWeatherOutlook published their summer forecast a few weeks ago.

(I think that although we've had a dry spring, it'll be a 'mixed' summer of dry/warm (maybe hot days), mixed in with wet days. So we'll see......)

Unsettled start to June likely, but how may the rest of summer play out?

Ahead of the Netweather Summer 2025 forecast, we look at some the clues that point to how the summer may turn out after a likely unsettled start to June.

Spoke to soon about the hosepipe ban. See Yorkshire are implementing one from Friday 11th. I guess other regions won’t be too far behind.

My son lives in West Yorkshire. Certainly hasn't been hot there.

TheSalmonMousse · 09/07/2025 07:50

It did annoy me watching the news yesterday. They had a woman, claiming to be a keen gardener, spraying hose pipe water all over her lawn. Really not helping matters. Even if it's still legal this week, she didn't need to be doing it in the first place.

My son lives in West Yorkshire. Certainly hasn't been hot there.

Yep my parents live there too and it’s been much warmer and dry down here so heaven knows why they are the first to have a hosepipe ban!

EmeraldRoulette · 09/07/2025 16:48

I think hose pipe bans are to do with reservoir levels. So it may not be linked to how hot it's been. Though it should be linked to rainfall.

I have arrived in the Northeast. It is very warm! Maybe I did need the air-conditioned room! Anyway, it's definitely better than it is at home.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 09/07/2025 17:00

We're visiting family this weekend and in hot weather going upstairs there is like walking into an oven. They said they've bought AC units for the bedrooms and I really hope they work or it will be unbearable. Sleeping downstairs won't be an option as other family are sleeping there.

GloriaSmud · 10/07/2025 07:11

Looks like the heat builds over the next few days and over the weekend, with temperatures close to 30/31C in central/south/SE regions. Possibility of thundery showers going into next week but there's just nothing in the way of substantial rain showing on the weather models at the moment.

(EmeraldRoulette ~ I'm don't think I'm a fan of those matrix things either ~ prefer just to have a map with green, amber and red and a bit of writing to read!)

Thanks @GloriaSmud - there doesn’t seem to be much consensus about next week. Staying warmish but the rain seems an uncertainty. Forecasts keep changing every time I look!

justasking111 · 10/07/2025 10:26

Husband took the dogs for a walk at 7am. Came back said too bloody hot and went out fishing. I've stripped the bed, everything in the washing machine. Will also wash the bedspread today.

I'll go shopping in a bit for some salad bits then I'm done. Will watch Wimbledon this afternoon.

Had new furniture yesterday so will loll in style 🤣

GloriaSmud · 10/07/2025 10:54

Excellent stuff, justasking111 ~ I have my spot already reserved on the sofa later on for the tennis as well!

I've just been for a walk and noticed that the council have hung large bags (they looks a bit like bin liners!) on the support stakes of some young trees that they planted a few months ago. I'm guessing they're full of water and they drip slowly around the base of the tree to keep them going. I hope it works ~ with some of the trees, the leaves are already brown and shrivelled.

@Delatron ~ indeed there doesn't. I'm hoping the metoffice have got it about right for their long-range forecast, from Monday onwards although a few more showers for the midlands, south/SE would be nice!....

Monday 14th-Wednesday, 23rd July
The heatwave from the weekend will be gradually eroded from the west early next week as a cold front arrives from the Atlantic. This will bring the chance of some heavy rain or showers, perhaps thundery, especially in northern and western areas. Towards and beyond midweek, a rather changeable pattern is anticipated with some rain or showers possible at times, which could be heavy and thundery, and particularly focussed in western and northwestern areas. Longer drier spells are most likely towards the south and east, although even here some showers may be possible at times. Temperatures are likely to remain above average, especially in the south and east where further spells of very warm or hot weather remain possible.

Delatron · 10/07/2025 11:56

Oh at least it’s not a prolonged heatwave then @GloriaSmud and then I guess the uncertainty will be around when and where the rain will be.

EmeraldRoulette · 10/07/2025 21:35

I don't know @Delatron

Forecast is saying slight dip Tuesday then back up to 30 on Thursday for my bit of Essex.

GloriaSmud · 11/07/2025 07:02

As EmeraldRoulette says, it's looking like there'll be a dip in temperatures for the midlands/south/SE on Tuesday before temperatures rise again. For the rest of the country, temperatures become more like an 'average' summer later next week.
Hopefully there'll be some rain for everyone (more likely in the north/NW/Scotland for that) but they could be a bit 'hit and miss' thundery showers type of thing but at least it'll be something!

Some thoughts from Netweather about the next week or so...

Heatwave to ease early next week, but heat may return in the south later

A heatwave will affect most parts of the UK to end the week and over the weekend, before easing early next week, as low pressure and a cold front moves in from the west. However, high pressure may return across the south, along with hotter conditions.

Thanks - if the heat does return then as long as it hovers under 30 (which it looks to) then I can just about cope with that. Definitely could do with some decent rain. Fingers crossed.

I’m thinking this will turn out to be a record breaking summer - purely as the heat started so early and temperatures have not gone down much at all.

EmeraldRoulette · 11/07/2025 13:44

Is anyone up north?

Rant incoming - it's boiling up here. I arranged to stay two extra days after my work - because it was not supposed to be boiling. It was supposed to be pleasant. I had to go and buy a hat and I've asked the lady in the shop and she said "it is definitely not 25° - it's much hotter than that." that was not cheap, but there's not a lot of shops here. it looks like a couple of the local tea shops have closed because I suppose they couldn't be doing with working in the heat. Not that I blame them.

I was going to go to the beach this afternoon. Sounds silly, but I really wanted to go because I haven't seen the sea for ages. But if it's just gonna be relentless sun, I don't actually want to go. Honestly this morning I thought about going home early which is ironic because I originally thought I'd probably stay here longer if it was nice and cool. Hotel is a bit bonkers. But I really should have booked a room with air-conditioning. Who knew that would be necessary?! This was not forecast was it? Or am I looking at all the wrong websites?

I know weather forecast is take temperatures in the shade, which is ridiculous - it doesn't really give you any information.

now debating going to museum or staying in and watching the tennis. But then I'd be staying in a very hot room.

justasking111 · 11/07/2025 14:38

Oop north Wales so west. It's okay here. Mid twenties. I'm not sitting out though. DH has just taken the dogs out in the boat it's cool on the water they'll enjoy swimming. We're right on the coast though. Could be baking inland.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 11/07/2025 14:43

I'm about as inland as it gets in the UK and it is baking. 31C and climbing.

We've cancelled going away this weekend as the place we'd be staying has all the main windows facing west and I cannot do it.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 11/07/2025 14:50

@EmeraldRoulette I'm in Whitley Bay on the NE coast. It's 23 degrees today and was 24/25 yesterday. Definitely no hotter. I went to the beach yesterday as there was an amazing breeze. I suffer with a medical condition that makes it hard to regulate my temperature but I don't feel like its been too bad here (mind, I do a lot to minimise in advance and I stay out of the sun for most of the day)

Obviously it does seem hotter in the evenings as buildings heat up, but I'm sorry you've gone from the frying pan to the fire so to speak. Tomorrow and Sunday are due to be a couple of degrees cooler.

EmeraldRoulette · 11/07/2025 14:59

@RainbowZebraWarrior oh I'm sure it's cooler here than it is in Essex

I suppose it's just harder to do the things that you do when you're trying to look around a new town, etc. I'm not good at being a tourist at the best of times. Real mistake getting the bigger room without air con though.

Last time I went away on my own, I was posting on here all the time because I'm just not good at being away on my own (but I don't really have a choice).

Still dithering about getting a taxi to the coast, but there is a chance of a breeze.

Pleasenomoreglitter · 11/07/2025 15:55

@EmeraldRoulettewhere are you staying? We holidayed in Northumberland last year, the beaches are beautiful and the sea is freezing, so standing in that should help cool you down

gingercat02 · 11/07/2025 17:18

@EmeraldRoulette@RainbowZebraWarrior
It's glorious in WB today. I have a teenager shovelling food in to get to the beach.
Epic weekend for the Mouth of the Tyne festival
I'm trying to persuade DH we need to hit a beer garden now I'm home from work

RainbowZebraWarrior · 11/07/2025 18:41

I get you @EmeraldRoulette as I'm single, disabled and Autistic. It's bloody difficult to navigate a new area at the best of times never mind the heat on top! It's so hot tonight, I'm having to lie on my bed for a bit before summoning the energy to water the garden, but the sun is now at the front of my bungalow where my bedroom is.

Brilliant weekend for the Mouth of Tyne festival @gingercat02 We go to Tynemouth market every Sunday but will be going extra early this weekend to guarantee a parking space. I used to be a chef at Rileys fish shack at King Eddie's Bay and I do not miss working in front of a wood fired oven in these temps!

gingercat02 · 11/07/2025 19:03

Oh wow Riley's is fab - shack and shop. I did a fish cookery course last year in the shop. Amazing
