Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

Thanks for the cool map!

Im in Southern Ireland and it’s starting to get loud now. I hope you are all ok x

caffeineanddryshampoo · 23/01/2025 21:58

Have family in Edinburgh so worried for them. Hope you are all safe in the red areas.

Here you go

Thanks and to the other pp.

However, it would seem to make more sense for it to appear and stay on your screen until you had read it and closed it. Hopefully we'll not get these often, so the information needs to be clearly and easily accessible.

On the up-side, even my extremely deaf elderly mother heard it - but she didn't know what it was or why she got it, and the message disappeared before she could read it!

Runingoncaffeine · 23/01/2025 22:00

Thinking of the ponies and all wildlife too in fact 🙏

Stay safe everyone!!

Hi all, I'm in Sussex along the coast. A bit worried about my 12 year old going to school tomorrow - she gets the bus but has to walk some of the way (two buses). Predicted around 55 MPH winds. I realise this is not as bad as some of you are getting but how would you feel about your kid getting themselves to school in this situation? I don't drive so can't take her in that way. Wondering if she should leave it until a bit later in the morning when the winds have settled. Or am I being a huge wimp!?

You are definitely not a wimp! You are understandably worried (as I would be too). I think what you propose is sensible, wait it out a bit 🙏

Stay safe everyone 🍀

Good luck to everyone in the red and amber warning areas. I work in Bodmin and had the mini tornado go past our building this morning!

Sharing this website for anyone who wants to see where the storm is and how it’s progressing - click on the map to see wind speeds. https://earth.nullschool.net/

Thank you for that - very helpful

thrifty24 · 23/01/2025 20:57

Ooh @justasking111 how are you tracking it? Is this an app?

Flight radar. Just put in the flight number, click on it, look down to show on map, click on that and voila. He's just landed at Liverpool 30 minute flight. As a child it took hours on the ferry, my mother and brother were always ill, whereas dad and I loved striding the deck.

icebearforpresident · 23/01/2025 22:08

Coastal Ayrshire here. All schools off and DH and I are both off tomorrow anyway. Got a feeling my husband might get called into his work, his boss is insisting they will be open despite literally every other shop here being closed so he’ll be turning his phone off. Garden as secure as it’s going to be and feeling very pleased we moved few years ago as our old house was right beside a river, got a feeling it will flood tomorrow.

Local supermarket also looks like Covid has hit again. I had my supermarket delivery booked for tomorrow which has been cancelled so went for bread, milk and some sandwich stuff in case we have a power cut. Managed to get a half loaf and 1 pint of milk so hopefully any power cut is short lived.

TooBigForMyBoots · 23/01/2025 22:08

Had 2 government alerts. I'm in a red zone. This is the first time this has happened here. There was a rush on bread earlier as people prepped for no cooking but so far folk have been pretty measured, taking down trampolines, securing bins and garden stuff, getting in snacks. The worst is expected to pass by 3pm.

Trains and buses are cancelled until at least midday when there will be another announcement.

The woman in my local shop says its only a bit of wind and the government want us all to stay indoors while they get up to shenanigans for a couple of hours.😆

BoudiccasBangles · 23/01/2025 22:09

That red area on Nullschool looks vicious.

Coastal Ayrshire here too. I've just had an e-mail saying Tesco stores will be closed in the area.

I'm expected to go to work tomorrow and wondering how to interperet the police instructions not to drive. Not sure if I'm overthinking it as I don't have far to go.

Sunnyside4 · 23/01/2025 22:14

Remain safe everyone and come back when you can to let us know how you are. Also, keep your pets safe.

ProbableDoris · 23/01/2025 22:20

Wind really getting up here in central Cornwall, must be mad on the Irish coast! It was dead calm when I went out at 6pm, not a breath of wind. Going to get an early night as I don’t think I’ll be getting much sleep!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/01/2025 22:23

My DH is supposed to be flying into Dublin sometime around now. I was going to check flights but I'm not sure where he's coming in from. I think London and DD thinks Amsterdam. There have been cancellations from both places, but he hasn't texted to say he's not coming, so hopefully he has landed already.

I really love that null school wind map, I've been clicking around on the storm and the highest wind I've found so far is 153 kph which is pretty extreme. I did read somewhere that we might get a record low pressure reading for Ireland when the centre of the storm passes over.

TooBigForMyBoots · 23/01/2025 22:23

It is totally calm here in Belfast. No rain. Not even a breeze.

Iamcaptainlee · 23/01/2025 22:24

I feel for all of the people having to make the decision about work because their bosses aren’t decent enough to make it themselves.

The eye of Storm Darragh went over us. The sky went red and everything went still. It was very weird and a bit eerie.

The alert message is stored in notifications on an iPhone if anyone is looking for it.

I noticed that too. I agree with you that this is a fault that needs to be addressed.

And on my android if you go to settings, then safety and emergency, then emergency alerts there's a button for emergency alert history which brings up the full message.

nicslackey1 · 23/01/2025 22:49

My mum is in a care home on the seafront, Northern Ireland and having her driver for end of life care started in the morning. I will have to walk as all public transport cancelled. Not good timing for us but I can't let her be on her own.

CharityShopChic · 23/01/2025 22:49

They must be very worried about me as I had the alert twice. Once along with everyone else just before 6pm, again about 8.15 when driving back from a vastly depleted Asda. Scared the shit out of me as I wasn't expecting it again!!

Very calm here in Glasgow, you'd never think there was a massive storm on the way. Lots of locaal businesses are closed tomorrow, no buses, no trains, no school and university. fingers crossed everyone is OK.

CharityShopChic · 23/01/2025 22:53

Oh that's tough @nicslackey1 . We went through that almost exactly 2 years ago with my dad. The driver made such a difference to him though, he was so much calmer and less agitated and clearly no longer in any pain. I hope things are as peaceful for you and your mum as they were for us.
