Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

Can't wait to go chasing cardboard out of cardboard bin up and down the road. Bloody bin men haven't been for 2 weeks.

Was supposed to be travelling by train to Glasgow on Friday but I imagine there'll be lots of cancellations so will travel up tomorrow instead.

What did you do? I’m travelling up tomorrow 🥺

Chipshopninja · 23/01/2025 13:31

What do you think the chances are of a flight from Manchester to France setting off at 6am Friday morning?

craigth162 · 23/01/2025 13:36

Forth valley here and red warning. Expecting schools to be shut. Have already told nursery wee guy won't be in. I'm not asking staff to travel on our behalf.

Only as far as Preston...

Igneococcus · 23/01/2025 13:44

Argyll&Bute's schools are closed tomorrow, the message just came in.

Isobel201 · 23/01/2025 13:52

I've been staying in North Wales, just got home today because I didn't fancy driving in the wind. Had rain and plenty of surface water to contend with though.

prayformyfence · 23/01/2025 14:17

North Ayrshire and inverclyde confirmed school closures now too and all ScotRail trains in our area at least.

There will be no trains travelling north of Preston or Newcastle towards Scotland, tomorrow, after 11am for the East Coast, not sure for the West Coast.

BiddyPop · 23/01/2025 14:53

DH told his team yesterday morning to WFH tomorrow (office in Dublin). Between Carlow Weather and BBC radio, he felt it would be needed. He was happy later when the red warnings were confirmed.

But then had a long chat and prep session with me last night - which started with charging up the power banks for phones, to where was the torch, I suggested he get out the flask so he can fill it tonight for a morning coffee, and he defrosted a proper dinner for tonight and something he can cook tonight to reheat or have cold tomorrow. His last idea was get a bottle of milk on the way home tonight but I persuaded him to get it before the shelves are stripped today.

Avanti stating they will not go more north than Preston. Scotrail cancelling all services.

BiancasSilverCoat · 23/01/2025 14:58

According to the met office there is a danger of dogs being blown off cliffs.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 23/01/2025 14:59

Schools in all of Ayrshire and most of Glasgow will be closed tomorrow.
Many shops not opening.
Red warning for Ayrshire.

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 23/01/2025 15:04

Northern Ireland schools closed and our local shopping center has posted they're also closed tomorrow.

Don’t think you need the met office to tell you not to walk on cliffs, with or without a dog, in this wind.

You'd be surprised the level of stupidity in many.
There is a danger to life.
People are being urged not to travel.

Tayside in Scotland here - schools in Angus are going to be closed tomorrow.

Yep. People being urged not to travel, trains not running, widespread red and amber warnings, risk to life etc but there's always a couple of folk going "but I'll be OK to drive the length of the UK for no particularly urgent reason, yes?" or thinking their flights will go ahead during a red weather warning for Wind.

Same as police and fire brigade havung to tell people not to go on frozen lakes in winter.

The RNLI has said to stay away from the water!

Just looked at the shipping forecast for sea areas Shannon, Rockall and Malin. Forecast Storm 10 to hurricane force 12. There's a sea state description of phenomenal in Rockall, which I've never heard before. Definitely batten down the hatches time by the sound of it.

Heck. I used to sail tall ships when I was younger and earlier today I was thinking about being on a sailing ship out there tomorrow!

Checking in from West Yorkshire. I'm very fortunate in that I don't have to leave the house tomorrow. I'll be laying the bins down on the ground and charging up some power banks in case of a power cut. Thinking of all those in red zones.

Years ago I was on the last ferry to leave for calais in a force 10, everything else cancelled but for this one sodding ferry. It was horrific. Couldn't even dock when we eventually got there cos the wind was blowing us away, so we had to go back out to sea for 7 hours to wait for the tide to change.

Ever been on a ferry that just reeks of vomit EVERYWHERE?! I was having a full on panic attack (terrified of boats as it is) whilst my poor dh was trying to deal with dh3 going green & ds2&1 running rampant in the kids play area. I couldn't lift my head off the table cos of vertigo lol. It was horrific

Nothatgingerpirate · 23/01/2025 15:45

SE here, the "easiest", just 60 mph.
Thinking about the people in red zones and our old chimney stack.
Never seen the Island of Ireland red altogether.
