Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

We've just upgraded from Amber to Red - doubt the schools are going to open tomorrow. I'll go out later and move the garden furniture into the garage....very sheltered garden but you don't know...

Checking in from North Ayrshire right on the coast, on a hill, exposed overlooking the islands. Thankfully able to wfh on Friday but watching nervously...

I think we are red now in NA!

CharityShopChic · 23/01/2025 11:07

We have now got a red warning in central Scotland from 10am to 5pm on Friday.

Iamcaptainlee · 23/01/2025 11:11

Should we expect schools to close?

Should we expect schools to close?

DS’s school has said it is. City school, but has staff and pupils travelling quite long distances from the county.

NippyNinjaCrab · 23/01/2025 11:18

Red in south ayrshire now!

TickingAlongNicely · 23/01/2025 11:27

Party i was due to attend in Edinburgh Castle has been cancelled. We were due to be driving from Yorkshire so relieved really.

Hope things are calmer than predicted for everyone.

Just checking in on this thread. Some good ideas for preparing.

I am Scottish Borders, no signs of schools closing yet tomorrow.

I've already informed work that I may have no power and be unable to work (wfh). Power cables here are regularly knocked out by trees in high winds, so with the speeds projected it could be bad.

South Wales here in the yellow zone about half a mile from the Amber zone and it’s horrible. Ten minutes ago it was like someone was throwing buckets of water and hail at the windows. We were having a delivery of some bathroom stuff so had the door open and the roaring was something else. I’m not sure if it was wind, thunder or jet engines.
Very dark too.

There's a proper squally band of rain currently going over the UK, and I think you probably got caught in a particularly nasty squall.

Red warning here in Midlothian now too. Haven't heard about schools shutting but they did during hurricane bawbag.
DS1 has an exam in college tomorrow so will check trains too.

DizzyCow63 · 23/01/2025 11:40

I’m in NI which is amber still, warning in place to 3pm Saturday at the minute and supposed to be getting the ferry to Cairnryan at 3.30pm on Saturday- I doubt that’s going to happen now 😬 Friday’s ferries are already cancelled. Am also worried if we do get over, if we will get home ok on Sunday evening as I see Scotland is still under weather warning for Sunday.

PickAChew · 23/01/2025 11:51

Checking in from NE England. Our forecast gusts, locally, are 10mph less scary than this time yesterday yet are still much bigger than I ever can recall being forecast.

BestIsWest · 23/01/2025 11:53

@RainbowZebraWarrior I think you’re right, it stopped raining and blowing about an hour ago and is just miserable now. I was a bit worried as next door (we are a semi) has scaffolding up as their roof is only now being repaired after the last storm.

Igneococcus · 23/01/2025 11:56

Coastal Argyll, this is the worst windspeed forecast I can remember.

LittleDeeAndME · 23/01/2025 12:02

Amber in Yorkshire - absolutely dreading it - my roof is not very good and it cost me £1000 last year to repair

GloriaSmud · 23/01/2025 12:07

Netweather has some good information about Storm Eowyn here.

For those asking about schools closing in the Red Zone, I should think they will ~ not for nothing does the metoffice say the following...

Keep yourself and others safe; avoid travelling by road during potentially dangerous conditions. It is not safe to drive in these conditions.

Don't risk injury to others or damage to your property. If you can do so safely, check for loose items outside your home and secure them. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.

Being outside in high winds makes you vulnerable to injury. Stay indoors if you can.

Red 'Danger to Life' warnings for Storm Eowyn

Met Office red wind warning for Northern Ireland and Scotland for Storm Eowyn to join Met Eireann's whole of Ireland red warnings. A danger to life Thursday night and on Friday.

WeirdBarbieKenergy · 23/01/2025 12:13

Ireland here, all schools and education facilities are closed tomorrow.

Even Tesco is closed until 4pm (subject to change)

RuledbytheWashingMachine · 23/01/2025 12:31

All schools are closed in NI tomorrow.

GirlOfThe70s · 23/01/2025 12:49

Code Red here, west coast of Scotland, in a cottage exposed on a high hill, right in the path of the storm. With a forest behind me. I took those plants I could lift from the deck at the front to under the eaves at the back, but there are others too heavy for me, so they will have to take their chances.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 23/01/2025 12:52

I am, as usual, right on the line between yellow and amber. I've got to go to work, so I shall just hope that we err on the yellow side and it's a bit blowy. Can do without the power cuts.

CoconutGroove · 23/01/2025 12:54

East Lothian and Midlothian have closed their schools tomorrow. I assume City of Edinburgh and West Lothian will shortly announce closures too.

Thatcountrymum · 23/01/2025 13:04

East ayrshire and south ayrshire schools and nursery's are all closed tomorrow

NewYorkherewecome · 23/01/2025 13:10

All schools in East Lothian (Scotland) are closed tomorrow.

RumPirate · 23/01/2025 13:12

DH is in Belfast for work and due to fly home tomorrow afternoon. I’ve been telling him to just extend his hotel but he thinks there is a chance his flight will go ahead. Hopefully he will take the red warning more seriously then he does me!
