Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

A large chunk of render (can't believe how thick it was, tbh) has come off one of our garden walls, which seems like a weird thing to happen because of the wind.

The brick underneath is much prettier; don't know why the former owners covered it up with hideously ugly grey render!

Partners saying not to go but if I do that is that sending the wrong message as lot of people HAVE to go out in it!

The fewer people who go out in it, the better for the emergency services. They don’t need to deal with more casualties than is necessary. It sends the right message, that only truly essential workers should be out in it.

This bought back to mind the horrors of lockdown where people were told that they mustn’t drive five miles for a walk because they might have a car accident on the way - they must stay at home (despite the fact that most accidents happen in the home).

TwentyKittens · 24/01/2025 13:18

Loads of trees down here in NW England. Local council has been updating the roads blocked and the ones cleared. Think they'll be working flat out today clearing roads. One tree down in my street which is sad as it was a lovely ornamental cherry. 😢

Yes but we didn't have storms to contend with during covid. Most people weren't going to have accidents and modern cars don't break down very often.

It's very different if you have high winds, trees falling down, flooding and ice.

venusandmars · 24/01/2025 13:21

In a red zone. Live in a house with a lot of glass, the frames are creaking like I've never heard it before. It goes quiet for a few minutes, followed by a period of extreme gusts.

Just saw someone trying to walk their dog. They had their back to the wind (in the direction they were trying to go). 3 or 4 steps backwards then blown 10 steps forward. Impossible weather. They have at least picked up their wee dog and have made rapid progress away with the wind behind them. Reminds me of Mary Poppins, I half expect to see them and and their dog flying over the rooftops! But seriously, why would you try to take your dog for a walk in this weather? A quick pee and back home is all it needs.

Auburngal · 24/01/2025 13:24

Leicestershire - yellow warning.

Winds died down a bit and got out to buy a few bits - do the rest of the shopping tomorrow. Wind was picking up as driving home. Car was rocking at traffic lights. Certainly would not like to drive in stronger wind.

Procrastination4 · 24/01/2025 13:38

Our red warning was from 2am to 10am (Cork, Ireland). It was really windy at 11pm last night so I was dreading what damage would be done in our area, but we seem to be okay. Our power didn’t go out either which was a bonus. But other parts of the country weren’t so lucky, and there has been really terrible destruction in parts of the country.
Best of luck to those still in red warning areas.

PickAChew · 24/01/2025 13:39

People are just stupid. The Redheugh bridge (across the Tyne) is closed to high sided vehicles and yet there's a bloody overturned lorry on it that now has to be dealt with.

AllPlayedOut · 24/01/2025 13:43

Yes covid was a completely different scenario. It’s very likely that someone will have an accident, no matter how careful they are, in this weather, likely from flying debris or falling trees and it’s only one day. Nothing like the covid restrictions.

Aye. The Tyne bridge is shut as well which is maybe why the stupid bugger chanced their luck.

Utterly mad here on the NE coast of England. There's been no let up in the gusts for the past few hrs. Appreciate that someone recently said different, but I'm coastal and surrounded by farmland.

Typo

Jabtastic · 24/01/2025 13:50

We are in the red zone. We lost power for a while but it's thankfully restored now.

Editing to say our teen was thrilled at school closing 😄 It really wasn't safe for schools to open here.

SnapCackleFlop · 24/01/2025 13:51

Confused30somethings · 24/01/2025 11:49

You really dont want your kids to be at home do you? Every excuse under the sun, most kids havent had to go to school as the majority are closed. Including ours and we're not even in a red zone!

There was no need for this and you completely misunderstood what the poster was saying.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 24/01/2025 13:54

Had a look at the past and present page to see the Aurora roof (and the provisional storm chaser), and a few posts down I spotted this: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/15eD35tuuw/

If anyone needs me, I'll be under the sofa.

In Glasgow and the wind’s extremely loud. Our neighbours fence is down. There’s a few trees nearby that are starting to crack. There’s a big one that’s really shaking right next to a powerline…
Our lights are also flickering and we’ve only seen one car pass, streets are dead apart from the occasional person taking their dog out.

Are you my neighbour? 🤣 Southside of Glasgow.

Our fence is down- OH out now trying to brace it- and we have two very large trees, one which is blowing pretty badly across the power lines (one line across our back garden).

OH urging me to check out insurance policy exavt wording about the trees 🙈.

He got back from Islay yesterday by the skin of his teeth- his ferry arrived with no issues, but they cancelled all others after his, despite the wind not picking up until this morning. Thank God as he'd been away since Monday with work. I'm feeling so awful for lots of the other colleagues who will be stuck there all weekend with families here.

YourPurpleGal · 24/01/2025 13:55

Yikes!!!😳

FizzingAda · 24/01/2025 13:57

As I said earlier I was relieved this morning that my Amazon delivery had been rescheduled for Saturday, only to receive notification later in the morning that it was coming today. When the driver arrived I apologised for him having to come out in this (97mph gusts), and he said that they weren't going to go out, but the managers told them they had to. He said there were power lines down on his route. If any Amazon managers read this, shame on you!!

It's nothing like Covid lockdowns!! It's common sense - stay home if your journey isn't absolutely necessary. There is a much higher chance of an accident/injury or even worse when the weather is like this. Why would anyone risk it if they don't have to?

Cher22 · 24/01/2025 14:10

Holy moly it wud blow the head off ya out there. Been wakened of and on from 1am....that was some powerful storm here in Northern Ireland. Think we outta the worse of it now but still windy and gusty. My home is my safe haven for today lol so scary during night.....seems we all in this together

I'm in NI, on the coast, red zone and weirdly it's... not that bad? I think we're lucky because we're in a dip so probably quite sheltered. Everything is closed though, including DD's school and DP's office, so we haven't had any need to venture out. The puppy is having the BEST time chasing leaves.

I'm in mid Ulster and it's not been that bad, certainly nowhere near as bad I was expecting it. The north coast got it far worse. Portrush (50 mile north from where I am) and the wind is twice as fierce as here.

Another poster gave this link and you can see it looks like we are nearly over the worst of it, with Scotland and Northern England now most impacted.

We've had the strongest recorded winds in the UK in my area (North East) and there is substantial damages/trees down everywhere. All roads in and out locally are blocked.

Yet we aren't in the red zone?

midgetastic · 24/01/2025 14:46

100mph in south Lanarkshire is the official current strongest gust

GrouchyKiwi · 24/01/2025 14:47

The roar of the wind is quite something.

Cher22 · 24/01/2025 14:47

Its so scary for everyone. Think storm Floris to follow in parts Sunday and Monday fgs 😩
