Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

I'm in central Scotland and hate the noises coming from outside. Wind isn't even at its peak for gusts yet. We're supposed to be going for an overnight in Edinburgh for our silver wedding anniversary so hoping it calms down later. Not venturing out any time soon

I'm in Glasgow and weirdly it sounds really bad but doesn't look like much- it's probably the loudest wind I've ever heard but i've seen much worse! I think it's to get worse though and my lights did flicker earlier.

HOTTOGOisastupidsong · 24/01/2025 12:21

I think we’re past the worst of it here in NI - amazingly there’s a tree surgeon out down the street removing a downed tree - I’m both impressed that the house owners got him so quickly, and amazed that he isn’t
needed elsewhere - like it’s a big tree, but it’s not blocking any major roads or anything

FizzingAda · 24/01/2025 12:31

Think we're at the peak now in A gus, 97mph gusts. The satellite dish has finally come down off the roof, fortunately the metal bracket didn't seem to damage the solar panels. The microphone thingy is still dangling on its wire, but if that breaks it will probably just stay on the edge of the panels. Horrible noises from outdoors, shrubs leaning over, trees waving like demented dancers.
i had something ordered from Amazon, checked this morning and it said coming on Saturday, so I was relieved, I don't want drivers risking their lives. Just received a notification it is coming today! In the next couple of hours. This is madness.

Bixaweet · 24/01/2025 12:35

Not a soul about in Glasgow. Only an occasional car. Reminds me of lockdown.

Winds howling, building shaking, letterbox rattling. Not as bad here yet as previous storms but it's definitely picking up now. Worse to come, I reckon.

dementedpixie · 24/01/2025 12:35

My loft hatch just lifted then settled again. Was very spooky. Has done it before and left it open.

AInightingale · 24/01/2025 12:41

Didn't know until five minutes ago that 'Eowyn' was a woman's name invented by Tolkien. I've been thinking of it as a Welsh man's name.

I'm in NI, on the coast, red zone and weirdly it's... not that bad? I think we're lucky because we're in a dip so probably quite sheltered. Everything is closed though, including DD's school and DP's office, so we haven't had any need to venture out. The puppy is having the BEST time chasing leaves.

Red zone west coast of Scotland here. We live on the waterfront and it certainly got very noisy for a while and the windows were rattling. But it's calmed down a lot now and just seems like any other very windy winters day on the coast to be honest. We get plenty of days like this. I wonder if it will pick up again or continue to die down over the course of the day.

Just heard someone’s glass recycling box depositing its contents down the street - grr! Everyone here has garages - why on earth didn’t they take it indoors last night??

DH now awake - no-one’s for stirring properly yet though. It’s cosy in bed! Power still on for now.

Edited

DH put our garden waste bin (full size wheelie bin) out earlier last night. I had to whisper in his shell like in the early hours to fetch it back in first thing in the morning as the collection was (obviously) not happening today.

SassK · 24/01/2025 12:55

I'm red zone west scotland. Our local M&S has been very badly damaged, thank goodness the decision was made to close stores today.
Trees down and roads blocked all over town, roofs and fences badly damaged.

Fortunately I haven't saw any serious damage to homes on the local news reports. Long may that continue.

TortillasAndSalsa · 24/01/2025 12:55

Dh is stuck on m6 and there are 4 overturned lorries and a car that's been hit by a motorway sign 🙈

There's the odd loon passing through George Square! 🤷‍♀️

Moro93 · 24/01/2025 12:56

In Glasgow and the wind’s extremely loud. Our neighbours fence is down. There’s a few trees nearby that are starting to crack. There’s a big one that’s really shaking right next to a powerline…
Our lights are also flickering and we’ve only seen one car pass, streets are dead apart from the occasional person taking their dog out.

user1469779776 · 24/01/2025 12:56

Has calmed down a lot in Dublin and lovely blue sky, which we haven't seen lately!

CiderandPosies · 24/01/2025 12:59

Not a lot to talk about here- sorry. Windy but sunny and not too cold.

South London.

Tortielady · 24/01/2025 13:00

I'm in the north east of England in the amber zone and we have had a very windy morning. There are still some powerful gusts around, but the pauses between them are getting longer. There is a roof opposite that will need some work, but it's been in poor shape for a while; I hope that the property owner will take heed of the fact that there's now a slate on the pavement, which could have landed on someone's head! The other roofs on their side look OK, but I won't be able to look at ours till it's a lot safer out there.

I hope everyone in the red zone is safe and well and there isn't too much property damage for you to clear up. You'll have an amber warning, but that will be positively mellow compared to what you've had to put up with!

Siouxtse1 · 24/01/2025 13:01

Dropped children off this morning in 85mph gusts. Have rescued recycling box and empty wormery (would have been fine, but one of next door's fence panels has blown over in 80mph gusts, creating a blustery patch that was previously sheltered).

Just had a message from school saying due to adverse weather, I can pick the children up an hour earlier. But that the school remains open today. All after school clubs cancelled (understandable, I bet there will be some horrible commutes in store). Winds starting to drop round here now,

Amber weather warning, North Cumbria.

GrouchyKiwi · 24/01/2025 13:02

Have just seen pictures of a house with half a roof in my wee East Lothian town. No one was hurt but it must be worrying.

There's a constant note playing outside. Can't work out if it's just the wind blowing through some pipes or something, or if it's some kind of warning siren thing. It's bloody annoying either way.

cheezncrackers · 24/01/2025 13:04

Reading all the messages from those of you in the red and amber zones is quite surreal as I (in the home counties) look out at a blue sky and only gently waving trees. Stay safe everyone! Stay at home and don't worry about missing a day of nursery for your DC. Much better that she's at home than walking about outside where a tree, a wall or a roof tile could hit her (and you).

Cece92 · 24/01/2025 13:08

How's everyone doing? Just finished work. Weather is awful powers has flickered surprised my WiFi and power have stayed on. I've gained half a shed and my whirly has bent and broken. Grateful though to be in doors xx

I kept her off and not long after letting them know have seen there's a school a few towns over that's in lockdown because part of the roofs blown off!! and there's also a notice on Facebook there's a tree blocking off a road near to ours so 😬 my partner's still at work albeit there's not a lot happening there but apparently most places near where he works (a port) have sent all the workforce home. The sun keeps coming out but then the wind picks up again. Stay safe!

God I hope he's okay!! My partners a lorry driver and his boss sent them home yesterday. Not worth the risk xx

I'm in West Lothian- so red zone. We're at the edge of urban area with lots of trees and quite high up. It was bad earlier but didn't feel quite as bad as other storms. It has picked up again and the difference is how gusty it is and the strength of the gusts. We have some trees that barely move in most storms and the gusts are bending them wildly today. It is starting to pick up now as I type.

West Lothian here too, village out passed Blackburn way. Think we are about to hit the worst of it xx
