Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

I'm in north-east England and Daughters due at nursery this afternoon, not sure what to do as she's ASD non-verbal so not sure how she's going to feel about it as would be on foot as don't drive. It's actually only quick but also have ASD homeschooled nine year old son who is begging not to go out in it 😩 trying to tell him it's fine as only a ten minute walk each way but he's aware of someone who got hit by roof tiles one year when the wind was bad so it's difficult. Partners saying not to go but if I do that is that sending the wrong message as lot of people HAVE to go out in it!

I'd seriously not take her. It's not worth the potential meltdown / fallout for your son. Just stay at home and stay safe. It's bloody awful out there, and it's not quite peaked yet.

(Autistic mum with Autistic DD and also fellow North Eastener)

Just to add that daughter is redoing nursery and is 5 years old so is mandatory school age so that's partly the worry, I imagine most children have managed to get to school

Just keep her home. In the nicest way, you're being a bit daft worrying about a day off at age 5.

3luckystars · 24/01/2025 11:29

Or any age.

Donttellempike · 24/01/2025 11:36

At their age it doesn’t matter.

Sorry to hear that.
As an country/area we are not set up for the damage that will be regularly caused by these storms for the indefinite future. I hope the IOM can get things sorted and that we will all learn a lesson about being prepared and making resources available.

JengaJanet · 24/01/2025 11:37

I would keep her home @Lovemyones the warnings are there for a reason. I admire your attitude towards school attendance as lots of people are very lax nowadays. As you already home school could you do a lesson with them both about the storm. Look up pictures online, watch a forecast do an abstract painting of a swirling wind etc.

Tangled123 · 24/01/2025 11:40

My area has a red warning until 2, but I think we’re past the worst of it now as the forecast gives wind speeds to fall the rest of the day. A neighbour’s fence has been blown over, and ours has taken a battering, but no major damage anywhere as far as I can see. Still have power too and blue skies at the moment.

Thank you, I also am on the spectrum so I feel better knowing others would be doing the same thing and I'm not overreacting! It's just that it doesn't actually look too bad out the window, but the noises and obviously the reports are proving things are quite hairy out there! Really appreciate everyone making me feel better about not taking her!!

Yes that is already on my son's work list Today! I love teaching about things as they happen it definitely peaks their interest more being in the eye of the storm as it were.
Honestly, thank you, really appreciate everyones input, and that you saw my point regarding school :)

You really dont want your kids to be at home do you? Every excuse under the sun, most kids havent had to go to school as the majority are closed. Including ours and we're not even in a red zone!

peachgreen · 24/01/2025 11:51

I'm in NI, on the coast, red zone and weirdly it's... not that bad? I think we're lucky because we're in a dip so probably quite sheltered. Everything is closed though, including DD's school and DP's office, so we haven't had any need to venture out. The puppy is having the BEST time chasing leaves.

😂 you really did not read my original post did you?!
I actually home educate our 9 year old son.
My Daughter goes to nursery (her second year in nursery where she goes on an afternoon when she should be in full time reception with her peers but they didn't want her to go full time as she's ASD non verbal and just enjoys the play and socialising aspect)
This is the first term where she is mandatory and no schools in our area are closed - that's why I feel worried about not going in. You couldn't be more wrong but being rude is obviously your go to as is a lot of people's online

I'm in Co Durham and, even though it's incredibly hairy out there (and my nerves are now shot after a downpipe bounced off the dining room roof) schools are open.

I've reported your nasty little (inaccurate) post. There's really no need.

No schools are closed near me and we have 50mph winds in an Amber zone. Just to answer your point about most schools being closed. No need to be so nasty towards some one.

DeclineandFall · 24/01/2025 12:04

I'm in West Lothian- so red zone. We're at the edge of urban area with lots of trees and quite high up. It was bad earlier but didn't feel quite as bad as other storms. It has picked up again and the difference is how gusty it is and the strength of the gusts. We have some trees that barely move in most storms and the gusts are bending them wildly today. It is starting to pick up now as I type.

I don't think it's as bad as Darragh, no. Which was ferocious shrieking wind for what seemed like hours. This is more great blustery gusts with squalls of rain. Absolutely horrible weather which no-one in their right mind would go into, though in saying that my younger cat managed a three hour session outside this morning.

Same in Tyne & Wear. Eldest daughter still off on her school trip but it is pretty nasty outside. They’ve cancelled the after school clubs as the ones tonight are all sporty things outdoors and they are keeping kids in at break/lunchtime

dementedpixie · 24/01/2025 12:16

I'm in central Scotland and hate the noises coming from outside. Wind isn't even at its peak for gusts yet. We're supposed to be going for an overnight in Edinburgh for our silver wedding anniversary so hoping it calms down later. Not venturing out any time soon

Ivyiris · 24/01/2025 12:16

I'm scared. Part of a roof went flying down my street 😞

Ivyiris · 24/01/2025 12:17

Should add im in a 'red zone'
