Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

But losing power doesn't mean you can't buy food that doesn't need to be cooked during that time.

It does if the local shops are closed because they've also lost power.

It sounds worse to me here than Darragh did, but the pics I am seeing of the sea (from the Provisional Storm Chaser of NI 😂 and others) seem not too bad. Local leisure centre has apparently lost its roof - again!

The Aurora again? Grin They need to just accept they have an open air pool.

Oh feck I missed that! They've only just restarted swimming lessons. My kids are just never going to learn at this rate. 😭

Octocat · 24/01/2025 10:38

Haven't seen it on the news, just going by what @HOTTOGOisastupidsongsaid.

Yep! I mean really - it’s been beset with problems from day one that place. It looks pretty bad this time - worse than the last time actually. That hideously toxic past and present fb page has pics/video up. Bring back Pickie Pool - no roof required!

ApplesForMe · 24/01/2025 10:39

There must be mobile phone towers down as well. My parents have no electricity, internet or mobile phone for now.

HOTTOGOisastupidsong · 24/01/2025 10:41

Sunnyside4 · 24/01/2025 10:43

ApplesForMe you must be worried about your parents. Hopefully they still have a main landland phone and can at least make telephone calls, otherwise they're going to feel very cut off.

I was just looking - my algorithm won't thank me for actively seeking out that page. 😂 Usually I look at it from behind a cushion.

asparagusffern · 24/01/2025 10:45

It's still really gusty here by the coast in Dublin. Just started raining too. It was so noisy here during the night.

Much worse for us than Storm Daragh which didn't really affect us

LuLuRN · 24/01/2025 10:47

Bloody wild here in fife, I'm heading out to work in a while & bricking it for driving in this.

Thatcountrymum · 24/01/2025 10:48

I'm in the red area (east ayrshire) our main road is closed right now and schools/nurseries closed the wind seems to be picking up and our lights keep flickering fingers crossed .

GoldOrca · 24/01/2025 10:50

In the red zone here, east of Glasgow. The wind gusts are picking up and I can hear the wind howling. I'm feeling glad we are terraced and in a relatively new house but gusts are currently 79mph and will be up to 90 at 1pm!!

Ha! Me too. I tend to log on as DH if I feel the need to look at it because his account is completely dormant. I don’t need the algorithms or the drama from that page.

That is an excellent idea. Their old photos often crop up on my feed which I love, there was one right around the corner from us a while ago, very strange seeing some of the same houses. But I try not to seek it out.

Lovemyones · 24/01/2025 10:55

I'm in north-east England and Daughters due at nursery this afternoon, not sure what to do as she's ASD non-verbal so not sure how she's going to feel about it as would be on foot as don't drive. It's actually only quick but also have ASD homeschooled nine year old son who is begging not to go out in it 😩 trying to tell him it's fine as only a ten minute walk each way but he's aware of someone who got hit by roof tiles one year when the wind was bad so it's difficult. Partners saying not to go but if I do that is that sending the wrong message as lot of people HAVE to go out in it!

NotISaidTheCat · 24/01/2025 10:59

Red warning here in the Borders. We're surrounded by trees! 😬Just glanced outside and we have branches all over our courtyard. I took my dog for a walk before it got too bad, but he'll need to briefly go out again this afternoon, which I'm not looking forward to. I'm supposed to be hosting a Zoom chat tonight--hope we still have power. Stay safe, everyone!

AllPlayedOut · 24/01/2025 11:00

The fewer people who go out in it, the better for the emergency services. They don’t need to deal with more casualties than is necessary. It sends the right message, that only truly essential workers should be out in it.

icebearforpresident · 24/01/2025 11:01

Wind noticeably picked up as we got closer to 10am but so far, so good with us. Went upstairs to watch the sea for a while, I’m not particularly close to it but get a view from upstairs and even from a distance the waves look absolutely huge. Being on one of the sea front streets must be terrifying.

So far we’ve lost a couple of slates off the roof but that doesn’t surprise me to be honest, we have one area that’s been needing looked at for a while and I’m guessing that’s where they have came from.

InMySpareTime · 24/01/2025 11:08

Thank goodness, DS (the reckless driving one from my posts upthread) has seen sense and has rebooked his Dundee stay for March, he'll go to York instead today.
That's a relief!

TheTecknician · 24/01/2025 11:09

Leeds. Certainly windy but so far nothing that we haven't experienced many times before. Looking at the warnings map yesterday, I think this area was always likely to just miss the worst of the wind - west of the Pennines is probably going to be windier today. It's also dry here so far and my neighbour has pegged some washing on the line.

You don't have to go out in it, though. The more people who stay out of it, the better.

The northern power grid map is lit up like a Christmas tree. They're going to be busy.

We have some of next door's flashing in the front garden and DH has just had to secure their brand new glass recycling box that they got to replace the one that emptied its contents then disappeared up the road during storm Darragh.

They don't. Only emergency workers HAVE to go out when there's a red warning.

Everyone else should absolutely stay inside.

Lovemyones · 24/01/2025 11:17

Just to add that daughter is redoing nursery and is 5 years old so is mandatory school age so that's partly the worry, I imagine most children have managed to get to school
