Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

In Dublin here, the wind was horrendous last night, wide awake from 3am. We still have power, but about 700,000 are without. There’s only just over 5 million people in the Republic, so that’s a phenomenal amount of households affected.

ohbygolly · 24/01/2025 09:47

Well we got through the night. Got hardly any sleep due to the noise - it was so so loud and also had a few branches hit the front door. Luckily we have power - most people around here don't.

The wind is still going strong. Met Éireann are reporting they recorded gusts of 183kph in Galway last night.

Over 750,000 customers without electricity too.

I know a lot of people were sceptical about how bad this would be (we've got some false alarms in the past), but this is very real.

AInightingale · 24/01/2025 09:48

I don't think this is as bad as Darragh @HOTTOGOisastupidsong . Maybe the worst hasn't hit us yet. It's stormy out here in the east but I'm not hearing the ferocity of the Darragh winds. Yet!

Camille99 · 24/01/2025 09:48

Absolute carnage here in Northern Ireland. Sheds blowing about, roofs off houses, trees down everywhere. No electricity.

I’ve messaged DS who is at college in Dub - he hasn’t answered so i’m hoping that means he’s sleeping through and there’s no damage or power cut to his flat.

It sounds worse to me here than Darragh did, but the pics I am seeing of the sea (from the Provisional Storm Chaser of NI 😂 and others) seem not too bad. Local leisure centre has apparently lost its roof - again!

Shetlands · 24/01/2025 09:51

Coastal Devon
Local weather station has winds back down to 40mph now so it's easing here but there was a 92mph gust at 05.30!

Hoping all of you in red zones stay safe.

MissRabbitHasBurnOut · 24/01/2025 09:51

DD (6) has just declared its not that windy and we should be going for a walk with her scooter 🙈
I fear I'm in for a long day here 😂

Violet35 · 24/01/2025 09:56

West Yorkshire here, wind is 28 mph, wind gusts reaching 60 mph now, worst to come yet 🙄😬 💨🌬️

Shityshitybangbang · 24/01/2025 10:01

In central Scotland. Wind is really picking up. Sad that the amount of greedy folk buying all the bread in the supermarket. Walking out with 5plus loaves of bread, 5 milks. These sort of situations divide the greedy self centred folk from the others.

How are they going to eat five loaves of bread in one day?! Maybe they're planning some kind of Jesus-inspired sharing event later.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 24/01/2025 10:06

So far just a fence panel down in my garden and loss of internet. I'm in Dublin. I woke up quite frequently throughout the night as the wind was howling in the gusts. I'm completely open to the west except for my garden wall as I'm on a hill and the ground slopes away in that direction so I was a bit worried about this, but so far just noise and fury and the water in my loo looking like a tiny storm.

BestIsWest · 24/01/2025 10:07

We’re in the yellow zone, half a mile outside the amber limit with gusts of 74mph and our neighbours are having their roof replaced. The roofers have started stripping it this morning. Madness.

GrouchyKiwi · 24/01/2025 10:08

We're in East Lothian. The A1 just south of us is closed because of overturned vehicles, so I hope your son has decided to stay at a services till later @InMySpareTime. I'm sure it will be the same situation in the West of the country.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 24/01/2025 10:09

We're out the red alert now and it's much calmer. Apparently the roads are full of debris. Take care folks. Mind yourselves!

PickAChew · 24/01/2025 10:09

Auburngal · 24/01/2025 08:46

Cheese and biscuits?

I would have to go buy the biscuits and only one out of the 4 of us can eat the cheese. Such a shame as your way of doing things is clearly the One Correct Way.

NDSceptic · 24/01/2025 10:09

Not the best day for walking up Ben Nevis, but I bet some idiot will try:

I didn't do it, but I can understand people being worried about needing food for more than one day. In Ireland they're saying it will take a week to get power restored to everyone - that's a long time to be feeding a couple of kids, for example.

But losing power doesn't mean you can't buy food that doesn't need to be cooked during that time.

FizzingAda · 24/01/2025 10:21

In NE Scotland here, just on the cusp of red and amber, we are 300 metres above sea level and fairly exposed, ear the coast. Wind is wild, 60mph at the moment, expected to go to 87mph shortly. Have just done another check around the garden, and noticed that on one of the chimneys the old satellite dish was waving about, and as we watched the microphone thingy fell off and is hanging on by its wire. I think the whole dish may come down, just hope it doesn't damage the solar panels 🫣

dynamiccactus · 24/01/2025 10:22

InMySpareTime · 24/01/2025 08:34

@Cece92 he's stopping at Tebay, Moffat and Edinburgh, hopefully the journey with breaks will take long enough that he'll miss the worst of the red zone by the time he gets there.
He can stay at Edinburgh with relatives if the bridge is closed at that point.
He's got a glib answer for all my objections.

If he lived with me I'd have taken away the car keys.

Plastictrees · 24/01/2025 10:25

West coast Scotland here, very windy since about 5am and picking up. We were in the middle of having roof repairs done and have scaffolding up currently, terrible timing!

ERthree · 24/01/2025 10:29

Plastictrees Hope your roof stays on. Girvan just had a gust of 108mph

ERthree · 24/01/2025 10:30

dynamiccactus · 24/01/2025 10:20

But losing power doesn't mean you can't buy food that doesn't need to be cooked during that time.

Not many shops will have back up generators, so will be closed.

Solaire18381 · 24/01/2025 10:31

Still in the Yellow zone here, however it feels worse and there have been strong winds since 7 am with trees down etc locally. Looking at the map, the Amber warning is less than 10 miles away, so give or take a few miles. Given we were Amber in the December storms, I would say this seems worse.
