Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

Kind of agree with Stravaig on this one. I live in Fife and work in Dundee. All staff told not to drive today. I've been driving for over 40 years and wouldn't drive in this. There is a danger to life warning for a reason! My kids have all been told in no uncertain terms that they are not to drive today. Ops son is an idiot with little or no experience of driving in these conditions.

It's not just his safety at risk, it's the safety of any road users around him, and of anyone called out to assist if he has an accident.

He's an ignorant, arrogant, entitled wee shit.

Bloody hell, calm down, that's a bit harsh.

He is being a silly goose, mind. He'll probably have to abandon that trip half-way.

Im prepared

This made me laugh 😂

It's very windy here where I am in Scotland, and I don't think we've to get the worst of it until 10am so feeling a wee bit nervous as to what it'll be like then.
I have lots of trees behind my house, I don't think any of them are close enough to hit it but they are really blowing about at the moment!

its not just your life you risk when travelling in Red alerts, the those of the emergency services. They don't get to stay home safe if they are being called out

Edited to say I obviously mean a general you, not directed at anyone particular person

Coastal South Ayrshire here, Storm woke me just after 5, still in the amber warning, red warning comes into effect in an hour. It is certainly wild out there, big angry waves and getting worse.

Same. It sounds brutal out there and our fence is already down. We're in East Lothian.

Laiste · 24/01/2025 08:56

Oh no hang on it IS windy - i must have looked out while a calm bit was happening.

A 'high' wind, as my nan would say. Sunny though.

Auburngal · 24/01/2025 08:57

Most trees that blow over in the storms here, have one thing in common. Wrapped with ivy. As the ivy hides any potential damage/disease that the trees have.

HOTTOGOisastupidsong · 24/01/2025 08:58

Power still on here for now, but lights and TV are flickering. DH is at his desk working while he can. The DC are all up and eldest has started revision (mocks start on Monday). The other two are very definitely taking this as a day off - not a work from
home day! They’ve said they’re not even logging on to their school iPads to see what their teachers are saying. Their group chats are full of pics of damage from friends though - one friend has a roof tile through the window of their car and her parents are trying to cover it with plastic tarpaulin to stop the rain getting in, but struggling with just sellotape to attach it. Another has their front fence down and leaning against the car - they’re not going out to check the damage yet as nothing can be done for now.

The DC are awfully concerned that if the power goes out they won’t be able to watch Traitors finale tonight.

Yes, and the ivy catches the wind while a leafless tree would not.

All the rain we've had and the boggy ground makes the tree roots a bit less stable. We've had trees down every bloody week round here for ages. Lane's blocked.

Thanks for that. There's a sixty foot tree wrapped in ivy in my neighbour's back garden which is considerably less than sixty feet from my house. But it seems indestructible. Famous last words.

CharityShopChic · 24/01/2025 09:01

I don't really think people outwith central Scotland and the red area saying what they would and wouldn't be comfortable doing is relevant, really.

We have all had government alerts on our phone saying to stay at home and that it's unsafe to drive. There are no trains, buses, all schools shut, most supermarkets in the red zone are all closed. This is not the day for a wee jaunt to Dundee and agree that the poster whose son thinks a cumbria - edinburgh - dundee trip is in any way appropriate is an utter fool.

Flamingoknees · 24/01/2025 09:01

I'm in NE England and just got back from school run. Bin day, and they are now overturning into the roads. Car was 'wobbling' but not badly. I volunteer (very much non essential) this pm, and winds forcast to be 65 plus mph. by then. Wondering if I shouldn't be adding unnecessary traffic, or if I'll seem like a wimp. I'm ex NHS so used to not even considering not going in 🤔

HOTTOGOisastupidsong · 24/01/2025 09:09

The doll on BBC Breakfast from NI is just along the coast from us in Donaghadee and it actually doesn’t look too bad. Like I know it is bad, but the sea looks relatively calm where she is. I’d love to see the beach down the road from us, or the Long Hole which is just about 15min walk from us - it was worst during Darragh than I have ever seen it in 40+ years, but no chance am I going out the door at all to look.

(local eejit is posting on Facebook however that he is storm chasing which is safe for him to do because he does it “provisionally” professionally, but no-one else should risk it. I don’t know whether to roll my eyes or be cross at him.)

They need to shut the tarpaulin in the door so it's trapped top and bottom. Tape will do sod all.

Auburngal · 24/01/2025 09:10

Two men are on scaffolding to a Victorian terrace back of me. Winds have died down, for the moment. Forecasted to get worse later on. Very stupid and dangerous.

Think they’ve got it shut in the door, but they’re trying to tape down the other side which can’t be secured by the door as it’s just flapping about. (This is coming from 13 year old though so who knows!)

NoBinturongsHereMate · 24/01/2025 09:11

And Police Scotland are telling people not to drive.

Not 'unless necessary', just 'don't'.

A new driver has no business ignoring this, and there should be a mechanism for revoking the licence of those who do. Clearly he doesn't have sufficient judgement to be in charge of car.

SnoopysHoose · 24/01/2025 09:12

I have read that car insurance may be invalid driving in a red warning for wind.
it is not invalid. but if you do make a claim it will be assessed as to whether it was essential travel or not.

Auburngal · 24/01/2025 09:12

Anyone who doesn't secure their DC/DGC's trampolines with tent pegs or anything to the ground are very irresponsible as trampolines can topple over if kids bounce on one small area of the trampoline.

65 mph? Stay indoors.

I am feeling a bit scared here in rural Scotland. We are surrounded by trees so I am praying damage will be minimal. We have a small herd of ponies and I have turned them out into a big field, away from any trees and have told them I will see them when this is all over. If I keep them in they will go crazy with fear, plus the yard is surrounded by trees, putting them in the firing line. I have to walk through woodland to their field and last time I checked on them in a storm, a falling tree nearly came down on me. Just keeping my fingers crossed nothing comes down on our house or outbuildings.

Edited

Hope your ponies are OK.
I thought it was very sweet that you told them you'll see them when it's over. Like they really understood!
