Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

Morning all just got up to start work at 9. Having a coffee and already worried about the wind and we aren't even in the weather warning yet. I hope everyone's staying safe and warm inside. X

3luckystars · 24/01/2025 08:27

I slept through it. The worst of it has passed us now in southern Ireland I hope.

Theres another storm coming along behind it though.

What causes flickering lights etc? Are power cables not underground? Sorry for the daft question. My DH said there would be no chance we would get a power cut.

Rural and the lines are overhead. All it takes is one tree to come down and that's it, till they find the tree and remove it and restore the line

LemonadePockets · 24/01/2025 08:28

I’m in Glasgow, the rain started about 6am and wind, it’s rough but obviously while to go until the warning time hits. I live in a caravan, I’m concerned. It’s noisy, my daughter has ASD and is scared so we’re doing distraction activities. Stay safe everyone

DS (who only passed his driving test last month) is driving from Manchester to Dundee today, we've tried to dissuade him but he's determined it'll be fine.
I've urged him to take it carefully, be extra vigilant around lorries, and stop for regular breaks, but he thinks I'm worrying over nothing.

How is he getting over the bridge to Dundee? They are all closed. I'd be so worried. I hope he is okay OP. My partners a lorry driver and been sent home last night I'm so relieved xxx

Alsonification · 24/01/2025 08:30

I'm in Ireland, in the midlands. Our red warning came into effect at 6am but it was horrendous from around 3am. I love storms but not this one. It's been a terrifying night listening to it & it's only ramping up now.
Someone in Laois had their windows blown in!
My power hasn't gone thankfully & the garden looks fairly ok I think. I'll check the roof when I can get outside but for now I'm not opening a door for fear of it flying off its hinges.

Have you never seen electricity pylons with cables running from them?

caffeineanddryshampoo · 24/01/2025 08:32

Chester here and the BBC weather says it's going up to 53 but I think that's a lie because it sounds way worse here. Another site had wind gusts up to 63. The schools are still open, son's primary has changed entrances so as to avoid walking past trees.

I can't begin to imagine what the rest of the country is facing it's scary enough here! We still haven't had the wonky chimney repaired and where some rain seeped in from Storm Darragh. First roofer came out after a while of not being able to contact, said he'd quote, then it was Xmas, got a high quote so I asked for it to be broken down, not heard from him since. Contacted another roofer last week who was supposed to be coming out this week which is clearly not going to happen today. Just hope nothing has worsened up there :(

Duidi123 · 24/01/2025 08:33

I’m in the northwest of Ireland it’s been blowing a gale since 3am! Thankfully I still have power but the lights are flickering. All my family 40 minutes south have had no power now for a while. I usually don’t mind the weather but this is very scary. I really feel for the families in homes with defective blocks here too, I can’t imagine how scary it must be to be sat in your house wondering if it’s going to come down around you.

InMySpareTime · 24/01/2025 08:34

@Cece92 he's stopping at Tebay, Moffat and Edinburgh, hopefully the journey with breaks will take long enough that he'll miss the worst of the red zone by the time he gets there.
He can stay at Edinburgh with relatives if the bridge is closed at that point.
He's got a glib answer for all my objections.

There's several places near here already reporting power outages. Village next to ours has a restore estimate of 10pm. The other is about 5pm. If that's 2 out this early I expect there will be more. So his 'no chance' might come back and bite him

Overhead lines, pylons, two things cause the flicker, tree branches touching the lines shorting the circuit to earth for a second or so or wet on the porcelain insulators causing a short to the pole, again its a brief flash over, the result of which is a flicker at the consumers end as their supply voltage drops.

Electricity jumps dry air at 1000V per mm that goes up tenfold or more in heavy rain, most rural lines are 11,000 and 33,000 V so in wet conditions the arc (spark) can jump 40 cm or so off a 33,000 V line to a nearby branch, can be very impressive!

suki1964 · 24/01/2025 08:39

Think we up here on the NW coast of NI are going to see the worse in the hour with winds of 94 predicted - lights are really flickering now

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 24/01/2025 08:40

I overbought this week forgetting we were going to be out. So now we're not going out and we'll use everything!

Two weeks before the Great Covid Bogroll Crisis I did the Tesco "re-order same basket" from the week before and forgot to take the bogroll off. I was able to shit sit smugly through the whole thing.

Lack of foresight stands me in good stead.

YourAzureEagle · 24/01/2025 08:42

I'm in Salisbury, blue sky, totally still, was raining heavily at 3.00 am but not much wind.

Therealjudgejudy · 24/01/2025 08:42

South east Ireland here. Red area. Put on white noise and slept through it last night.

Very windy out there now though.

Parents are in County Kilkenny and lost their power last night.

Regular breaks is necessary. I think the bridge over to Fife will be closed all day. Not sure about the one to Dundee. His safety is all that matters. My partner is Perth and it's an amber warning for him xxx

MugsyBalonz · 24/01/2025 08:45

RainbowZebraWarrior · 24/01/2025 08:03

Regarding driving in Amber and Red zones (I said yesterday there would be at least one)

Apart from the fact it's wholly inadvisable and bridges etc will be closed, if you listen to the current traffic and travel reports, there are multiple overturned vehicles, road closures due to trees down etc.

Anyway, Whitley Bay here and not sounding good. Still on an Amber warning. Really wish we didn't have to go to school. I'm quite exposed here.

We were on a red warning for Arwen and BBC Breakfast sent their cameras up here to report from the seafront. So dangerous and irresponsible. Bloody idiots.

Whitley Bay here too!

I don't think we've got the peak of it yet, that's supposed to be lunchtime-ish. I've not been out yet but I imagine it'll be bad across some of the more open roads due to crosswinds and I expect traffic will be worse than usual. Lots of schools closed here and there but lots open still, AdC has gone in but I'm working on the assumption that they might be sent home early so keeping my phone handy.

Breathinginthenewyear · 24/01/2025 08:45

South East Ireland here too (but close to the midlands). Power out since 2 am. Based on experience we likely won't get it back for a couple of days. It was a bad night but I think we're through the worst of it. Red warning lifts here at 11 but I don't think it's anywhere near red speeds any more.

Auburngal · 24/01/2025 08:46

PickAChew · 24/01/2025 08:21

If your power goes off then it's easier to shove something between a couple of slices of bread than try to cook potatoes or pasta. I always make sure I have plenty of bread before an adverse weather event and stuff like eggs, hot dogs, tinned fish, pre-cooked rice, tinned soup, jars of sauce and so on to hand so that I can cobble meals for the family together in the dark and cold, potentially with limited or no running water.

The only last minute element to that is extra bread.

Cheese and biscuits?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 24/01/2025 08:46

Just outside Belfast. Still have power so far, but it's loud out there, and seems to be picking up.

Half the shed roof has lost its felt, one of the waterbutts is some way down the garden, and there have been at least 2 rooftile-like smashing noises. I am not.gping out to investigate those in more detail.

It's not just his safety at risk, it's the safety of any road users around him, and of anyone called out to assist if he has an accident.

He's an ignorant, arrogant, entitled wee shit.

DandelionPockets · 24/01/2025 07:11

Bit windy here in the west midlands, not noisy enough to have woken me early. Quick glance outside and all looks normal.

Same here.
Except it's not even actually windy now ...

HOTTOGOisastupidsong · 24/01/2025 08:52

Tree in the garden across the road has just come down. Thankfully no cars parked nearby and it’s in the corner of their garden and went outward so while their hedge is wrecked, there’s no other damage. I’ve told mum in an attempt to keep her indoors (she lives just around the corner) but apparently she’d already given up on going out after Dad had a go at her and she didn’t want to deal with him being in a grump all day 🙄
