Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

InMySpareTime Hope your son gets there OK OP. DD passed her test two weeks ago and is 24, and I know how I'd feel if she was doing that drive.

On the lighter note, we're in a yellow warning zone and. Despite this people put their bins out for collection and one (maybe more) went over last night. I could see paper blowing down the street. Just seen a chap from up the road out collecting paper from people's gardens and the road, in his dressing gown and clearly in his bedtime shorts😂.

Just had a text from my mum asking if the local newsagents or co-op was open. She’s heading out for a walk apparently and was debating whether to walk down to the shops, or go in the opposite direction towards the town. I’ve told her everything is closed (I don’t actually know this, but I’m pretty sure it’s true - I know most places are) and to not leave the house. She’s responded by saying that she’s lived by the sea her whole life and she’ll be fine. She went a walk during Hurricane Charlie (late 80s) and it was fine, so this’ll be fine too. She’s mid-70s, 5ft nothing and barely 8st - I honestly think she’s the potential to be lifted off her feet but she will not listen to sense - thinks she’s invincible.

It's more the flying debris, tiles from rooftops that I'd be worried about.

DS (who only passed his driving test last month) is driving from Manchester to Dundee today, we've tried to dissuade him but he's determined it'll be fine.
I've urged him to take it carefully, be extra vigilant around lorries, and stop for regular breaks, but he thinks I'm worrying over nothing.

Total madness, we live in the central belt of Scotland where we have a red weather warning. I’ve been awake 90>mins and the wind has gradually got louder and more fierce.

all universities schools, nurseries, buses, trains and many different businesses including supermarkets, pubs and shops have been suspended / closed until 6.30pm.

a red weather at it is danger to life!

my dh is a roofer and is having to go and check a job just now to make sure all ok, he promised me he would be back in an hour! Total madness to be out in that, I can hear bins etc falling while I’m lying in bed.

it’s wild and only going to get worse.

That too! I’ve a friend in the PSNI who lives around the corner (right on the seafront) so I texted him to ask what the sea was like as I can’t see it from my house - he said under no circumstances should mum go out. He came home from work at 6am and saw an elderly couple out - one walking and one in a motobility scooter - and they were battling the wind and massively struggling. He said he was struggling to stay upright getting through his front door and he’s not a small man. He reckons my mum wouldn’t be able to stay on her feet. She is absolutely insufferable - really pissed off now.

ReginaaPhalangee · 24/01/2025 08:03

Clackmannanshire here.

DH awoken around 3am with the noise. I was sleeping through it until he woke me up. Sounds loud again now but not due into red zone for a couple of hours. Getting nervous...

RainbowZebraWarrior · 24/01/2025 08:03

Regarding driving in Amber and Red zones (I said yesterday there would be at least one)

Apart from the fact it's wholly inadvisable and bridges etc will be closed, if you listen to the current traffic and travel reports, there are multiple overturned vehicles, road closures due to trees down etc.

Anyway, Whitley Bay here and not sounding good. Still on an Amber warning. Really wish we didn't have to go to school. I'm quite exposed here.

We were on a red warning for Arwen and BBC Breakfast sent their cameras up here to report from the seafront. So dangerous and irresponsible. Bloody idiots.

Auburngal · 24/01/2025 08:06

Met Office have told people in red warning areas not to go out. So why is it ok for TV stations to let reporters out and stand outside broadcasting?

I have read that car insurance may be invalid driving in a red warning for wind.

Cosycover · 24/01/2025 08:09

What causes flickering lights etc? Are power cables not underground? Sorry for the daft question. My DH said there would be no chance we would get a power cut.

Exactly. It's so irresponsible.

We have coastguards and RNLI telling people not to go out / near the sea, then turn the TV on to see some burning idiot being buffeted around on a seafront telling people how crazy and dangerous the wind is. I suppose they see it as their job; like reporting from war zones. I just think it's fucking stupid.

It probably should be, unless you are in an essential occupation.

But after the covid experience, can you imagine all the arguing about what should be an essential occupation! Mind you, even the supermarkets are closed this time.

No apparantly that's a myth. One of the big insurance companies said its not the case

missbeehive5 · 24/01/2025 08:12

NE England here. The wind woke me up around 3-4am and between that and my toddler wriggling about I didn't get back to sleep for ages. It's very windy but less menacing now, I think I it always feels worse at night doesn't it.

Why is it always bog roll!? {Remember Covid? Bog roll was like beaten gold leaf}

Bread and bog roll... one can presumably have toast and a poo.

I admire his optimism. Power cuts are one of the things listed as a possibility in red areas

We've got everything fully charged just incase

I'm in the red zone too. The wind woke me up. Everything is closed here, we had a couple of govenrnent text warnings come though - quite loud and alarming, even phones that were switched off started flashing, vibrating and loud klaxon type alarm.
Schools and workplaces closed early yesterday, all public places closed too. No transport, all shops closed, warnings of power and mobile network outages.
OH popped into Tesco yesterday on his way home from work, people all seemed to be alert to the warnings- although did mean the bread ( and strangely toilet roll) shelves were empty.
People taking things very seriously here.

Even phones that were off? As in off off?!

Most electricity cables are above ground (you see them all the time propped up by pylons)

They don't tend to put them underground as they overheat.

Macrodatarefiner · 24/01/2025 08:19

I'm in Western Scotland and was up half the night listening to the wind unable to sleep through the noise but I fell back to sleep and things seem much calmer now. Not red zone until 10am I think

Those are wonderful slippers!
My Dad used to call anyone who wore red shoes ''Moira'' after an old film of the same name.

Wish people would understand there is more food than bloody bread and they can survive without them. I don't eat sliced bread every day.

If your power goes off then it's easier to shove something between a couple of slices of bread than try to cook potatoes or pasta. I always make sure I have plenty of bread before an adverse weather event and stuff like eggs, hot dogs, tinned fish, pre-cooked rice, tinned soup, jars of sauce and so on to hand so that I can cobble meals for the family together in the dark and cold, potentially with limited or no running water.

The only last minute element to that is extra bread.

Very true! and the wind may cause nervousness in some people, {worrying about their roof} which speeds peristalsis somewhat.

But with no power, a sandwich comes in handy

GirlOfThe70s · 24/01/2025 08:23

I'm in the west coast of Scotland and it started to make itself known around 6.30, and god knows what it will be like when it really starts - predicted for 10am. The shrieking of the wind was like a banshee. I tried just now (8.20am) to open the back door and the force of the wind made it impossible. I'm in an exposed position on a hill too.
