Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

That's so reckless @InMySpareTime , no wonder you're worried.

This is insane. I'm in south Scotland, everything is closed, everyone's been told not to go out except for emergency. Your son will be putting himself and the emergency service at risk.

Also he probably won't get across the bridge it'll be shut. He'll need to go around

Theimpossiblegirl · 24/01/2025 07:24

Also driving in a weather warning may impact his insurance.

DowntonNabby · 24/01/2025 07:25

Bit blowier than usual in London but it looks like it'll pass by 10am. Stay safe everyone in the red zone.

wellhereweareonceagain · 24/01/2025 07:27

Just been told that we are not opening till at least 12 depending on wind and road conditions

speakout · 24/01/2025 07:27

I'm in the red zone too. The wind woke me up. Everything is closed here, we had a couple of govenrnent text warnings come though - quite loud and alarming, even phones that were switched off started flashing, vibrating and loud klaxon type alarm.
Schools and workplaces closed early yesterday, all public places closed too. No transport, all shops closed, warnings of power and mobile network outages.
OH popped into Tesco yesterday on his way home from work, people all seemed to be alert to the warnings- although did mean the bread ( and strangely toilet roll) shelves were empty.
People taking things very seriously here.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 24/01/2025 07:28

Red warning out yesterday for 10am onwards today in Edinburgh. DH and I were both told our offices are closed today and we're working at home today. Gig in Glasgow tonight postponed (sorry Elephant Sessions.)

Dead calm when I woke up at 5.30 this morning. Now the wind's picking up in rainy gusts. Our recent roof survey may need redone!

InMySpareTime · 24/01/2025 07:29

I can't hide his car keys, he has his own house, (he's in his twenties, just took ages to get round to learning to drive) I'm so worried about him today.

CeeJay81 · 24/01/2025 07:30

Mid Wales here and got woken up by it twice in the night. Sounds very rough and we are only on the border of Amber/Yellow warning.

prayformyfence · 24/01/2025 07:34

On the west coast of Scotland, high position right on the coast in the red zone. It's starting to pick up now. So far much like the other winter storms but it's yet to fully arrive here. I am glad it will be light when it does at least we can see what's going on - must be so scary in dark in Ireland.

Why is it always bog roll!? {Remember Covid? Bog roll was like beaten gold leaf}

Bread and bog roll... one can presumably have toast and a poo.

InTheWaitingRoom · 24/01/2025 07:38

I'm in the red zone with two ND DS and a dog in a house I own and can already not afford repairs...I am absolutely petrified. We are on a brow of a hill on a busy road and wind is hitting the front of the house, the windows flex. I have told my youngest son he can't go into his room today. 12 hours of this. I have been awake most of the night with worry. Winds are 63mph just now, due to rise to 77mph in the next couple of hours.

FluffytheGoldfish · 24/01/2025 07:40

In Glasgow and I’ve had to re-relocate the bins as DHs idea of safe was not safe..
I would have got him up to do it but he is not well(can’t work not well not just man flu) and I was already up and dressed. If I was trying to get to work today I think I would seriously had to think about turning back the gust are so strong..and it’s still only Amber here.

DS (who only passed his driving test last month) is driving from Manchester to Dundee today, we've tried to dissuade him but he's determined it'll be fine.
I've urged him to take it carefully, be extra vigilant around lorries, and stop for regular breaks, but he thinks I'm worrying over nothing.

Could you send him the official government alert? It says very clearly that it is unsafe to drive. https://www.gov.uk/alerts/23-jan-2025-2

Emergency alert

Issued by the UK and Scottish Governments A RED warning for wind has been issued. Extremely strong winds associated with Storm Éowyn are expected to cause significant disruption from 10am on Friday 24 January 2025. Strong winds can present a danger to...

Of course you are. 🥰❤️

HOTTOGOisastupidsong · 24/01/2025 07:44

Just had a text from my mum asking if the local newsagents or co-op was open. She’s heading out for a walk apparently and was debating whether to walk down to the shops, or go in the opposite direction towards the town. I’ve told her everything is closed (I don’t actually know this, but I’m pretty sure it’s true - I know most places are) and to not leave the house. She’s responded by saying that she’s lived by the sea her whole life and she’ll be fine. She went a walk during Hurricane Charlie (late 80s) and it was fine, so this’ll be fine too. She’s mid-70s, 5ft nothing and barely 8st - I honestly think she’s the potential to be lifted off her feet but she will not listen to sense - thinks she’s invincible.

Beeloux · 24/01/2025 07:45

Very windy here in Newcastle. Almost got blown away just putting the bin out. Debating bringing it back in!

I'd be worried too. He's being stupid. I can't think of any other 'storm' days when they have closed schools. It's very occasionally snow that closes them.

And yes the Frierton bridge will be shut.

He should at least hold off to lunchtime so he isn't hitting the central belt until 5pm and keep an eye on the road conditions.

Auburngal · 24/01/2025 07:48

Yellow warning here. One fencing panel that divides the car park to the never used communal drying area went on NYE/NYD night. Pulled my curtains back and noticed the next two have gone done, almost hitting my car. Need to be moved before I can move my car.

Yet the panels were an angle that looked like they were going to fall inside the drying area.

These fencing panels are not my responsibility - its the property management company's.

Stumbleine · 24/01/2025 07:50

North West ROI here. Wind is shaking the walls and no power. Wishing I'd prepped more, but we are in the middle of a house move.

Auburngal · 24/01/2025 07:52

Wish people would understand there is more food than bloody bread and they can survive without them. I don't eat sliced bread every day.

ProbableDoris · 24/01/2025 07:52

Still very gusty here in Cornwall but I think we’re through the worst of it. Still in bed though, haven’t actually opened the curtains yet.

LookItsMeAgain · 24/01/2025 07:53

Dublin checking in - the wind isn't consistent but by god it is dangerously gusty. I wouldn't want to be on a motor way anywhere when you get gusts this strong.

Anyone following Carlow Weather man? He's been up all night and has been posting regular updates to Threads.

One of my neighbours (I hate them right now) left their tinkly little wind chimes up. I mean who leaves WIND CHIMES up in a STORM???? I fucking hope the wind takes them away and dumps them somewhere. That to me is really inconsiderate. More so than not securing a trampoline.

Anyway, the word is that there are over 500k people in Ireland currently without electricity. The ESB Networks crews just managed to complete all the work from the last storm and they'll be back out later today fixing the network from this storm.

Check out PowerCheck online if you're Irish and you want to know if there is power outages in an area that you have family/loved ones.
