Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

Anyone in
Cork
Westmeath or
Tipperary

elderly relatives in some and starting to get worried for them.

So long as they're indoors and don't attempt to go out for any reason, they will be fine. Text or call them in the morning x

Peachy2005 · 24/01/2025 01:55

Would people not consider turning phones off now rather than be disturbed with repeating alerts all night? Or do you need to keep them on for alerts in case river bursts banks or that kind of thing? I’m going to put earplugs in so hopefully nothing will wake me unless the roof comes off.

asparagusffern · 24/01/2025 01:57

I'm in Dublin, wind was so strong between 11 and 12.30, but nothing now, just raining

From what I've just seen on here, my phone is going on silent!!

My nearest and dearest are all safe and at home, and I would like to sleep while I can!

Yes I’ve been trying.
They're probably asleep with not a worry in the world whilst I’m Googling like crazy. 🤣
thanks Trees,

I wonder if the alert still goes off though if phone on silent…

I don’t have alerts, it was a very convoluted sign-up process the time I looked into it. If I lived in a flood zone or right by the sea I suppose I would have had to do it.

Cork City - it's wild but we still have power. Shutting down the desktop now but probably won't get much sleep. No-one should be out in this weather - we have all been well warned for the last few days. Hopefully we'll all get through this okay. Try not to worry.

She did a decent job of rearing you - she will have the sense to keep safe! x

I thought it was an automatic thing you had to opt out of, rather than opt in?

None of the 5 of us opted in, but we all still got the alert!

In Glasgow. Worrying about my wee mum whose back home in Ireland on her own. She right on the east coast, literally at the shore surrounded by a forest. Shes got her torches, hot water bottles, flasks, water supply, devices charged etc. Shes a tough one. In the big storm in the 80s 2 trees came down on the road at the same time whilst she was out on her bike. One immediately behind and 1 in front. She sawv it hapoening but there was nothing she could do. Split seconds and she have been crushed. She climbed over the felled tree in front and walked home.i remember her arrival v dishevelled but v calm. She reminded me of this tonight, saying shed be grand . The last we spoke she was heading to bed to listen to Bruce Springsteen.

She sounds amazing 😍

West of Scotland. Rain picking up and a little wind. All schools, trains, buses and most businesses shut tomorrow anyway. My NHS friend still needs to go to work in the morning so thinking of everyone there, carers, and in emergency services. Hopefully it isn't as bad as they think but in my 40 years I've never felt unsettled over weather!

minerva7 · 24/01/2025 02:20

@nicslackey1 I hope you don't have too much trouble getting to your mum... and I hope she is peaceful and free from pain ❤️

ohbygolly · 24/01/2025 02:39

West of Ireland here. The wind is so loud, I can't sleep. You can feel the gusts going around the house.

So far everything looks okay outside. And we still have power.

HappyWhenItsSnowing · 24/01/2025 02:45

Hope everyone makes it out safe with no damage

AyrnotAir · 24/01/2025 02:52

I'm in South West Scotland in red area but Amber's not supposed to be till 6am and red from 10 and the winds woke me and DH up it's really loud and gusty out there. We are coastal with predictions of gusts over 100 possibly.

Dh is off tomoro and I'm working from home. Kids are off but wev had some really bad news last night and I think I'm going to call and ask for annual leave as between that and the wind il not sleep much. Downstairs now with tea and given up for now. I can't believe how loud it is already. Lots of banging outside going on in the street and my back garden.

The alert still goes off if your phones on silent, both me and DH had ours on silent at 6pm when they went off. I'm going to move my car out the drive on to the street, as soon as it's a bit later.

Wonder how forth valley will be hit tomorrow? I've put the wheelie bins in the sheds and hopefully the hot tub lid survives the winds

Also in the Forth Valley here! You're better prepared than we are, nowhere to put the bins so just hoping they stay put Grin

Osory · 24/01/2025 03:30

Sounded v wild in Dublin over last hour but calming down now a bit

Funnywonder · 24/01/2025 03:51

I'm awake at stupid o'clock because I fell asleep after dinner and ruined any chance of getting to.sleep at my usual time. The storm is kind of undulating here (near Belfast.) Big gusts. Then completely quiet. We have been told that it will start to get really severe around 7am. We are high up and our garden is very exposed, but at least we consigned our rusty old trampoline to the recycling centre a few weeks ago.

echt · 24/01/2025 04:02

I'm in Melbourne where we're having the best summer in years and I've just looked at the UK rain radar. I have most relations and many friends in the UK.

Bloody hell.

Best of luck everyone.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 24/01/2025 04:04

I'm awake and listening to the wind.
Power still on.

Macrodatarefiner · 24/01/2025 04:19

Wide awake listening to the wind in the West of Scotland

Rowgtfc72 · 24/01/2025 04:28

East coast of england here. Wet but only breezy so far. Thankfully as I have a 5am bike ride to work over exposed ground.
Messaged Kernow weather on Facebook and they reckon the storm is tracking about an hour behind.
Hope everyone stays safe and my thoughts are with those having a difficult time.

This is the latest Ventusky chart. Some scary wind speeds.

Up feeding the baby. NE England. Wind really howling in our chimney - I have to remind myself it's stood for 100 years. I was having a crazy dream about ghosts and bees.

I've put the heating on ☺️ the boiler is a more normal sound.

Must be wild in the west of Scotland @Macrodatarefiner ! Hope you keep your power supply.

sashh · 24/01/2025 04:30

Wet and windy in Wolverhampton.
