Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

It literally just said what the Met office page on red weather warnings says.

Yes, I do realise that, but not everyone will. If they're going to send out an alert with a scary noise and a message, the least they can do is make sure that people can read the message. The system is poorly designed and not fit for purpose if people have to go hunting about to find out what the siren was about.

TortillasAndSalsa · 24/01/2025 01:06

Wonder how forth valley will be hit tomorrow? I've put the wheelie bins in the sheds and hopefully the hot tub lid survives the winds

Runingoncaffeine · 24/01/2025 01:15

Hope everyone is holding up okay 💜

Treesinmygarden · 24/01/2025 01:17

In NI, all schools are closed, all council and EA premises are closed, Lidl, Tesco are closed all day. MoT centres, damps, the lot. Hospital procedures and O/P appts all cancelled. Sainsburys, Asda, SuperValu and EuroSpar seem to be closed until the red alert is over. Shops and businesses all over are closed.

I am thankful DH and I can wfh, as we mostly do anyway, DC1, 2 and 3 have all had their workplaces closed.

I am no fan of anything political, but all I can do is echo the Deputy First Minister who said, "prepare for the worst, hope for the best".

It's quite windy here already. Hopefully it won't be as bad as they seem to fear.

Stay safe everyone!

I really hate violent storms, so am feeling unsettled about what's to come.

Apparently hitting 70mph by 3am here.

I really feel for those of you in the red areas. Sending hugsxxx

Trufflebrie · 24/01/2025 01:23

Did anyone else just get the mobile alert again? I’m now on here as it woke both of us up a few minutes ago - totally terrified us when we were sound asleep & already anticipating things picking up through the evening.

Violet35 · 24/01/2025 01:24

West Yorkshire here, amber warnings for us.

No, not so far!

What's the point of doing that to people when they're asleep ffs?

There can't surely be a person in the red zone now who doesn't know about it, unless they live remotely without a phone and have zero contact with humans!

Where are you based?

South west

In Glasgow. Worrying about my wee mum whose back home in Ireland on her own. She right on the east coast, literally at the shore surrounded by a forest. Shes got her torches, hot water bottles, flasks, water supply, devices charged etc. Shes a tough one. In the big storm in the 80s 2 trees came down on the road at the same time whilst she was out on her bike. One immediately behind and 1 in front. She sawv it hapoening but there was nothing she could do. Split seconds and she have been crushed. She climbed over the felled tree in front and walked home.i remember her arrival v dishevelled but v calm. She reminded me of this tonight, saying shed be grand . The last we spoke she was heading to bed to listen to Bruce Springsteen.

seeyouinanotherlifewhenwearebothcats · 24/01/2025 01:38

@Trufflebrie yes I’ve just had the alert go off again. Could not believe it. And that is the FIFTH time I’ve got it?! Absolutely no need.

oakleaffy · 24/01/2025 01:39

Feeling stuffy with a cold, so have opened the window, and can hear the wind bustling about {West of England} 01:30am

It was 1953 when a terrible storm Surge hit Northern Europe, on 31st January and caused the Princess Victoria Ferry to sink between Stranraer and Larne in the North Channel {Irish Sea}

Just hope that no ships take chances in this storm.

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 24/01/2025 01:40

i’m in glasgow and just got the alert again.

That's bizarre! We only got it once.

Hope your lovely Mum and everyone else in the path of the storm stays safe.

As I type, the wind is strengthening {Window open} {SW England} we haven't had the phone warnings yet.

Iwiicit · 24/01/2025 01:41

In Lanarkshire and not one of the 5 phones in our house has received the alarm despite definitely having the correct settings!

BeethovenNinth · 24/01/2025 01:41

i am in a red zone - east coast - and people had cleared the shelves of bread. Tesco is only shut for a day so it’s a bit bizarre

it was a beautiful still night and still is

Your wee mammy will be grand so long as she stays indoors and keeps safe xx

thrifty24 · 24/01/2025 01:41

@NC28 it's so strange isn't it, I can't remember it being so calm this entire month. Felt very weird and eerie. We have managed to avoid much of the snow and ice and other bad weather this Winter so it kind of feels like this is our time for it.

onemorerose · 24/01/2025 01:46

SE coast of NI is really starting to ramp up now. Enough to wake me up. And another 6 hours til the worst is expected.

WarmthAndDepth · 24/01/2025 01:49

Yikes, it's ripping round the corners of the house and making the eaves creak. My pillow is in the corner of the room to an external wall taking the full brunt of the gusts and I definitely can't sleep.

CheeryPenisBeaker · 24/01/2025 01:49

Yes - just got the alert again! Woke me up!

Treesinmygarden · 24/01/2025 01:52

DD1 just got it again too - none of the rest of us have! Bizarre!

AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen · 24/01/2025 01:53
