Starting this but I'll leave predictions to the MN experts.

Looks like colder weather at New Year. Hopefully the winter sun will make a return. It's been such a grey autumn.

Just looked again and there's a rain warning (Wales and SW) and one for snow (for Scotland) as well.
Friday isn't going to be a fun day anywhere.

justasking111 · 22/01/2025 11:57

It's the deepest low since the 1960s I read.

ListenLinda · 22/01/2025 13:12

Our weather warning has been upgraded to an Amber one here in West Yorkshire.
people on social media talking about this storm being an ‘absolute monster’

ByMerryKoala · 22/01/2025 13:35

Gusts of wind hit a peak here at 73 mph on the morning rush hour on Friday. That's going to be a pita.

justasking111 · 22/01/2025 13:45

Looking across the pond they've blizzards in the deep south, and the temperature 🥶

Upgraded to red for all but 3 counties in Ireland from 2/3/4/6am to noon on Friday (depending on region for start times). One good thing is it's neaps tides so well short of the highest highs. My powerboat instructor had photos from a low pressure system storm, blowing easterly into Dun Laoghaire harbour, on a new moon spring tide which rose a good 8-10 feet higher than normal equinox spring tides (highest spring tides of the year). That is the only time I've ever seen the car park under water.

EmeraldRoulette · 24/01/2025 13:58

I'm glad to say it's not raining here

we were forecast heavy rain overnight and grey all day today - but the sun is shining, no rain overnight and also it's only just become windy, that was also forecast for last night

it does make me think all forecasts are AI generated or something, as they are still telling me I will look out of the window and see thick grey cloud. Very glad I'm not, but it makes a nonsense of forecasts

sorry to repeat myself but I find it particularly weird given that forecasts used to be really accurate and useful.

GloriaSmud · 25/01/2025 07:42

So after Storm Eowyn, there's a low pressure system coming in that'll affect mostly Wales/the Midlands, the south of the UK as well as Irish Sea coastlines, towards the end of the weekend/into next week and there are weather warnings already for that.

The middle of next week onwards, things calm down and look more settled, which will be a relief to those areas hit by Storm Eowyn.

Thanks Gloria. I'm going to hide Sunday/Monday.

justasking111 · 31/01/2025 17:29

We've had two days of lovely sunny weather. Long may it last. 😄

IDareSay · 31/01/2025 17:47

Same here @justasking111 it's really lifted my spirits, and it's Finally February tomorrow!

RafaistheKingofClay · 31/01/2025 17:48

Shhhh! Don’t jinx it.

justasking111 · 31/01/2025 17:59

It's damn cold at night though 🥶🥶

GloriaSmud · 01/02/2025 10:35

Hate to spoil the mood but winter might not be over!

countrygirl99 · 01/02/2025 10:53

In my non scientific experience the 3rd week of February is always shit. Once we get through that I can start looking forward to spring.

ByMerryKoala · 01/02/2025 10:56

I think it's the first week in March that has it in for you. You finally think you've hobbled through the last few yards of winter and celebrate your arrival into spring, with thoughts of sunlight and daffodils and baby lambs...and that's when you get the Beast from the East.

Delatron · 02/02/2025 10:04

March can be cruel. You are so over Winter by then..

Ne’er cast a clout ‘till May is out as the old Yorkshire saying goes.

I think I live in the wrong country. Ready for some warmth now and it will be months in truth…

Not looking forward to another cold spell. Dec/Jan I can cope with it but I’m done now.

Pixiedust1234 · 02/02/2025 11:47

I still believe in the old saying for March - either in like a lion and out like a lamb, or the opposite, but generally the two middle weeks are quite nice.

And yes to ne'er cast a clout too (and that April is always wet hence the saying April showers), plus oak before ash get ready for a splash. The old 'uns were right 😉

justasking111 · 02/02/2025 11:51

Beautiful day again. 8.30 this morning I saw a rainbow 🌈. And the goats are back in town 😁

Pixiedust1234 · 02/02/2025 11:54

Ohhhhh.... are those the lockdown goats? Love them 💕

Sinkintotheswamp · 02/02/2025 13:44

Those goats were great in Lockdown. (Unless you had a nice front garden in that town).
Laundry day here. I had such a backlog.

Beautiful day today. Sunshine all day and not too cold. Much needed!

I think sometimes we forget how chilly March and even April can be. Sob. I love it if we get an early heatwave though. And at least there is more light..

beenrumbled · 02/02/2025 18:48

I love the goats. Every time we go to Llandudno we look for them. Saw loads on the Orme and then again from West Beach in August.

It was grey and overcast all day today in Manchester. But I am enjoying the slightly longer days!

justasking111 · 02/02/2025 19:52

The goats will be in town for a few weeks I expect with this cold weather. They've removed dozens. Given contraception to them. They're irrepressible now 😁

SquirmOfEels · 02/02/2025 21:13

I always find this time of year a bit tough. Autumn, with nights drawing in, is somehow exciting. This is just grey and dull and chilly (and often wet) and there is ages to go until it's properly warm again.

Proper snow would however be welcome! Yes I know not everyone agrees, but somehow I'd prefer some emphatic weather (which doesn't cause horrible damage like high winds or torrential rain causing floods) than these weeks of grey.

I saw a headline from a tabloid, but cannot now find the article, predicting SNOWMAGEDDON this month. So presumably "wintry showers falling as snow on higher ground" is on the cards in the next couple of weeks?
