Starting this but I'll leave predictions to the MN experts.

Looks like colder weather at New Year. Hopefully the winter sun will make a return. It's been such a grey autumn.

I've sent DH out to get a photo of the river flooding, it's stopped rising and is dropping very slowly but there's more rain to come later.

I can't get my head around the fact that, in London, we've had thick fog for the last 3 or 4 days, morning and night, but the BBC weather app isn't mentioning it. My flat overlooks (in the distance) Greenwich, the river, and the skyline from east to west. It has been barely visible since Boxing Day and I would've thought that was worth flagging up, but it just says "light cloud and a gentle breeze" 🤔

Do you still have fog? I’m in the South East and I had a text from a friend on Xmas eve who was at Gatwick sitting in a plane that had been delayed. Looking out of my attic window and it’s still foggy, although not as bad.

justasking111 · 01/01/2025 09:57

We've flooding at Llanrwst, Bala and unfortunately our local hospital.

River Mersey looking very swollen.

This is the Mersey, currently about 3 metres higher than its usual level:

Happy New Year everyone! It's a pretty wild start.

Im keeping an eye on what happens during the weekend, when there is potential for heavy snow somewhere (possibly the Midlands). It's a classic clash between warm and cold air, notoriously difficult to forecast as it depends on the exact position that the low pressure tracks.

Delatron · 01/01/2025 10:20

Happy New Year and thank you @OhYouBadBadKitten it will be exciting to see how the cold spell pans out and where gets snow. Always so tricky for the forecasters with snow.

Urghto · 01/01/2025 10:38

Squall over us right now, SE

midgetastic · 01/01/2025 11:00

Our parkrun was not cancelled but those of us a bit slower got caught by the weather - sleet perhaps - quite unpleasant

IDareSay · 01/01/2025 11:03

Grey, wet and windy here on the south west coast. It was so dark when I came downstairs this morning that I went online to check what time sunrise was (as if we could see the sun anyway!) and it was at 8.12am and has been since Christmas day. We reach the dazzling heights of sunrise at 8.11 am on the 6th January, so even though it has been noticeably lighter for longer in the evenings since the winter solstice, the dark mornings have certainly cemented the feeling that we are in the dark depths of winter. I need more light!

Having had snow in November, unusual for this area, I feel like I have had my luck with snow this winter but it would certainly make a welcome change from this blustery wetness and grey gloom. Hope everyone is keeping warm and dry.

These weather warnings just keep on coming don't they?! Ice this time

Delatron · 01/01/2025 11:51

I see the Met Office have issued a weather warning for snow for pretty much the whole country for Sat-Monday. Shows how hard it is to predict if and where this snow will fall. I’m guessing we’ll be too mild down here in the SE.

We don’t have snow on our forecast.

Delatron · 01/01/2025 11:52

It also looks too mild on Sunday with rain so even if there’s any snow on Saturday it will be washed away. Unless the forecast changes.

blobby10 · 01/01/2025 11:56

I generally ignore the weather warnings as they are never accurate for where i am! However I made the mistake of trusting the BBC weather app this morning when walking the dog. 10 degrees but feels like zero it said!! So off I toddled wrapped in two pairs of trousers, one waterproof, three layers, warm and waterproof coat, thermal hat, thermal gloves. Within half a mile it didn't feel like zero at all! But it was raining too hard to undo or remove any layers Grin.
We are forecast some very cold weather the next few days so am hopeful we may also see some sunshine (at last!) , Ground is so sodden though it really can't take much more water.

Delatron · 01/01/2025 12:00

I can’t wait for some sunshine - it’s been ages since I woke up to sun. Hopefully tomorrow!

gingercat02 · 01/01/2025 12:07

We have a lovely sunny New Year's Day 😎
Happy New Year, weather watchers

Happy New Year and a big thank you to all the knowledgeable weather enthusiasts and experts who take the time to provide us with updates and explanations.
Always one of the most informative MN threads.

DagenhamDaisy · 01/01/2025 13:46

I'm really hoping for some snow in Essex at the weekend!

GloriaSmud · 01/01/2025 13:48

Happy New Year everyone! 🍾
Current weather warnings.

Nannynick mentioned the possibility of snow this coming weekend, a few days ago. A low pressure system moves in from the west/SW, Saturday evening/overnight and at the moment, it looks like the south/midlands will mostly get snow for a time/sleet or rain. It moves northwards though and the further north you are, the more likely it is you'll get snow, especially over high ground. The system then takes its time (over a few days) to move away eastwards, still producing rain/sleet/snow/snow showers as it leaves the country.
One to keep an eye on ❄

Strong winds, said to be milder here in SE London suburbs but set to be really cold well 4 and 3 degrees over next few days. I know that’s not cold to some but I need to do something on Saturday or Sunday (preferably Saturday) and even driving I don’t fancy it!

Agreed no snow on SE London forecasts. Can’t work out if I’m pleased or not!

I find that all the forecasts are different I guess the models don’t agree where the warm and cold front will bump in to each other and therefore what the temperatures will be..

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2025 19:00

Dont rule out snow in the SE. It is possible. Model output is all over the place.
Its going to probably be a case of 'nowcasting' over the weekend for many places.

This could be a pretty disruptive event, with freezing rain being an additional concern.

CandlesOrangesRedribbon · 01/01/2025 20:50

@OhYouBadBadKitten I want snow thank you for the reassurance I'm in the south near London. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you.

Delatron · 01/01/2025 21:20

Thanks @OhYouBadBadKitten - All sounds exciting whatever happens. Better than all this boring mild and grey weather.

SquirmOfEels · 01/01/2025 23:30

It was quite blowy in London today, and there was a squall line of very heavy rain going past in the middle of the day. Waiting for that to come and go was apparently why the New Year's Day Parade in the City had a delayed start.

We're under the weekend weather warnings for snow, but the Met Office forecasts for London say rain (with v high percentage chance of precipitation).

I'd like snow - everyone's still slightly in holiday mode, and our schools won't have gone back until after the weekend (exact return for pupils depends on inset days)
