Starting this but I'll leave predictions to the MN experts.

Looks like colder weather at New Year. Hopefully the winter sun will make a return. It's been such a grey autumn.

Was 17c here today at lunchtime. Lovely sunny blue skies. I really don't want -c temperatures again 😭

Delatron · 15/01/2025 16:46

Yeah I’m over the cold now. I either want snow or sunshine and then a bit more warmth. What I really don’t want (and what the forecast is) is endless cloud and cold. Dull.

GloriaSmud · 18/01/2025 08:00

So it looks like chilly and dull weather continues for the next few days but the GFS is showing a possible storm for next Friday/Saturday.
TheWeatherOutlook raises the possibility of it here and although it's a bit early to say that it will definitely come this way, if it does, there could be some weather warnings issued.

gingercat02 · 18/01/2025 08:58

It's January, I'm all for a bit of cold 🥶
It's a beautiful frosty morning here.
Storms however can do one!

justasking111 · 18/01/2025 09:21

A big chunk of North Wales has been without water since Wednesday, guess who's included in that. Thank goodness we've had some dry weather for the water board who had to dam and divert the river to get to the burst.

I can't wait for spring it's been a crap winter. The fencing/walling men starting on our storm damage next week, thankfully.

beenrumbled · 18/01/2025 09:44

A grey chilly morning in Manchester.
Thankfully our boiler has finally been fixed, so we are no longer shivering but we need to go out and it doesn't look inviting out there.

GloriaSmud · 19/01/2025 07:19

No sunshine for us yesterday so our temperature hovered around 0/1C and it looks like today is going to be similar.

The GFS is still showing something stormy for next weekend (have a feeling it might become a named storm), and at the moment, it's southern and western coasts that feel the first effects early Friday morning, then looks like a bit of a lull for them, before storm part 2, this time more for western coasts/up the Irish sea/across the middle of the country arrives.

One to keep an eye on in the next few days ~ Netweather's thoughts on it.

Intensifying jet stream to bring a change to wet and windy weather

We're moving from a period of high pressure to a much more unsettled pattern with the potential for some very strong winds. This change will be triggered by a potent northerly blast over North America which will help to fuel the jet stream.

justasking111 · 19/01/2025 09:12

OH rats that's us being clobbered again. We've new fencing going up as well.

Good news our water is back on after four days. 40k homes have been without. Bad news as they started pushing the water through we've bursts all over the place. Going to be a lot of roadworks.

Sinkintotheswamp · 19/01/2025 13:17

Even if it's not warm, the sun will mostly dry my laundry. This grey weather isn't drying anything.

justasking111 ~ I thought of you when I saw the direction where it was all heading.

Sinkintotheswamp ~ yes, this weather might be dry but there's no warmth about ~ temperatures here have struggled up to 2C this afternoon. There should be some sunny spells this week and then the stormy weather arrives next weekend....

BiddyPop · 19/01/2025 16:40

It was a balmy 8 degrees in Dublin but the forecast was talking about near freezing in Brussels - have just landed to thick thick fog, which looks the same as the freezing fog we had last week.

We felt the temp drop in the course of the rugby match - so between 5pm and 7:30pm yesterday, not just a "we're out too long in the outdoors" but a perceptible drop of a couple of degrees.

EmeraldRoulette · 20/01/2025 21:01

@GloriaSmud any thoughts on the next month or so in the south east please? Debating going to an event that requires an overnight hotel stay but the risk of snow and no refunds is at the front of my mind! Thanks.

I know some on here feel we get the US weather a while after they do. Really hoping we don't!

GloriaSmud · 21/01/2025 07:08

@EmeraldRoulette (as always, it's a bit of a risk as it's looking quite far ahead) at the moment, it's looking ok when it comes to snow. The rest of this month is looking stormy at times and as well as this weekend's storm, there could be several more as we go through the rest of the month. As we go into next month, it looks like it all calms down and high pressure builds. It increases the risk of fog and frost but that's about it ~ can't see any 'snowmageddon-type weather' on the way at the moment!

GloriaSmud · 21/01/2025 07:11

And the metoffice gives this long-range forecast which sort of backs up the 'stormy then settled' theme as we go into next month....

Saturday 25th-Monday, 3rd February
This looks like being and unsettled and disturbed period of weather across much of the country, but especially for northern and western parts, with southern and eastern areas probably missing the worst of the conditions a lot of the time. Over the weekend, after Friday's deep low and associated stormy weather, another system looks likely to move towards the UK from the Atlantic, driven in by the strong jet stream. There is the potential for further weather warnings or even a named storm at some point. Temperatures overall, are likely to end up being around normal or slightly above average, though given the strength of wind at times, it probably won't feel especially mild, especially when it's raining too.

Tuesday 4th-Tuesday 18th February
Generally mild at first, with periods of rain, showers and strong winds, alternating with short-lived brighter and cooler interludes, but with time these should become increasingly confined to northern parts. Pressure may build across southern areas, which would result in longer drier and more-settled spells here, albeit with an increased chance of overnight fog and frost with temperatures falling correspondingly.

Sorry, for NW

EmeraldRoulette · 21/01/2025 13:37

@GloriaSmud thank you! Much appreciated.

justasking111 · 21/01/2025 16:15

Am telling my fence fitters to crack on with the new steps at the back door and delay the fence fitting. 🙈

My DIL has just assembled a bike shed too.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 21/01/2025 17:03

Bother. We were supposed to be camping in Shropshire this coming weekend. I am even less enthusiastic than I was. Pitching a tent in a yellow weather warning for wind isn't my idea of fun nor is camping in January generally.

justasking111 · 21/01/2025 17:24

Friday looks bad. Saturday, Sunday seem okay.

BiddyPop · 22/01/2025 09:55

Met Eireann has issued an orange level alert for all of Ireland on Friday, DH tells me there are warnings of "worst storm seen since 1960s" and due to arrive during the day. He's already made the call for his team to WFH on Friday (their normal days on the office are Monday and Friday)

justasking111 · 22/01/2025 10:06

Anticipate power cuts. Usual precautions.
