Starting this but I'll leave predictions to the MN experts.

Looks like colder weather at New Year. Hopefully the winter sun will make a return. It's been such a grey autumn.

Looking around storm for us in N Wales on 31st. 20cm snow on new year day. But it's very uncertain depending on a storm forming off Ireland.

So noone knows anything yet really.

MrsSpencerCharnas · 29/12/2024 11:29

Got plans for NYD morning, hope the weather doesn't mess with the plans. Will be interesting to see what thoughts people have. The met office have issued a yellow weather warning for snow for where I am in the NE England.

Delatron · 29/12/2024 11:49

Definitely looks interesting from New Year’s Day onwards. Not fancying the stormy weather but liking the look of colder and sunnier. This endless grey, fog and mildness is very boring.

TokyoSushi · 29/12/2024 12:35

Well, I'm excited! ❄️

justasking111 · 29/12/2024 12:47

I'm not with the gales. We've lost some fencing and a wall at the front going up the steps, which I relied on with my stick to get to the top. If the rest of the fencing goes I'm not sure how I'll manage. We're forecast 70 mph again 🙈

Delatron · 29/12/2024 13:07

Yeah we lost our hedge to the last storm!

Be interesting to see how the cold/snow pans out. We are firmly in a snow shield area (Bucks low down).

Thanks @GloriaSmud

I can't get my head around the fact that, in London, we've had thick fog for the last 3 or 4 days, morning and night, but the BBC weather app isn't mentioning it. My flat overlooks (in the distance) Greenwich, the river, and the skyline from east to west. It has been barely visible since Boxing Day and I would've thought that was worth flagging up, but it just says "light cloud and a gentle breeze" 🤔

Delatron · 29/12/2024 18:07

The fog has been terrible in the SE. We headed in to London on Friday afternoon and the visibility on the roads was very bad.

A few of the forecasts have snow in the South. Trying not to get excited!

nannynick · 29/12/2024 21:18

Snow in Surrey on Sunday 5th according to whatever Apple uses for weather. Will see if that becomes reality. I hope not as I am working that Sunday and would rather not drive in snow.

Edinburgh Hogmanay is cancelled due to weather, and they're no strangers to wintry weather.

ICON 30/12/24 12:00z run looks like a lot of snow at 0:00 Mon 6 Jan.
Other models are not in agreement. Will have to wait and see what happens.

Updated weather warnings for the next few days ~ some areas of Scotland could get some proper amounts of snow as we head towards the New Year.

When it comes to the cold weather everywhere else, it looks set to arrive properly (as in countrywide cold) by Wednesday evening and looks set to stay throughout next week, with temperatures struggling to get above freezing at times. It looks like there could be snow showers just about anywhere but that's about all the GFS is going for at the moment ~ nothing (yet) that indicates the country will grind to a halt so I wouldn't get out the sledges and start polishing them just yet!

Thanks. Been following this. I’m ready for some proper winter weather.

Delatron · 30/12/2024 20:42

Me too. I was sweating on my dog walk in my jumper and coat today. Would like some crisp cold days and a bit of sun. I’m giving up hoping for snow as that keeps disappearing from the forecast.

CharlotteCChapel · 31/12/2024 08:20

I'm in the southwest today is again supposed to be mild and dull. Tomorrow is interesting, temperature is in double figures at midnight but be the afternoon down to low singles, technically cold enough for snow but as we're on the coast very unlikely to get any

justasking111 · 31/12/2024 13:17

Wet and a breeze in N Wales. Quite warm though.

gingercat02 · 31/12/2024 13:19

10 degrees, blowing a gale and pouring with rain. Delightful NYE in NE England!

Pixiedust1234 · 31/12/2024 15:45

It's getting a bit gusty outside now , enough to blow the cat a few feet sideways much to her surprise. It was lovely this morning though 🙁

InMySpareTime · 01/01/2025 08:34

The local river is the highest it's ever been but I can't see any news stories about flooding or anything about opening the flood gates which usually happens when the river gets high.
Anyone else getting flooding?

midgetastic · 01/01/2025 08:35

There was train lines flooded up north near Kingussie

rockingbird · 01/01/2025 09:20

Howling wind here on the Kent coast..! Tide is very high and all new years dips have been cancelled 🥶

Cornecopia · 01/01/2025 09:23

I’m north west and yesterday was horrific rain, my street is flooded at the bottom people can’t get on or off, very windy too!
fire brigade are en route to help afaik. Very windy too!

Sinkintotheswamp · 01/01/2025 09:29

Gosh corn. Hope that's resolved quickly.

I need to have a run but will keep an eye on the weather for a couple more hours. Local parkrun was cancelled as it's so grotty out there.
