Starting this but I'll leave predictions to the MN experts.

Looks like colder weather at New Year. Hopefully the winter sun will make a return. It's been such a grey autumn.

DH is on the road today, and having to take a different route as A1 closed for flooding just north of Grantham

beenrumbled · 07/01/2025 06:12

More snow in Manchester overnight! About an inch and a half.

TokyoSushi · 07/01/2025 06:52

Gosh, loads of 'surprise' snow in Warrington, probably the most of this period so far!

GloriaSmud · 07/01/2025 06:30

Wow beenrumbled, you've struck lucky this year! (hope the boiler's been fixed though.)

Leicestershire along with Lincolnshire had 'major incidents' declared yesterday.

Thankfully the boiler is fixed!I was just saying to DH that we have had more snow so far this year than the last couple.

Bonus snow this morning in Manchester, the ground is so cold it's all settling.
In half an hour we've gone from icy hellscape to winter wonderland and even cars aren't making lines in the road snow.

I think it's stopped now, it's really pretty but so cold.

gingercat02 · 09/01/2025 08:28

I've not been out yet but hard frost in NE. It was -11°c last night in Shap in Cumbria, which is very cold. The local weather people were very excited at having the coldest place in the UK.
I have the preheat on in my car!

justasking111 · 09/01/2025 09:14

Snow and hail turned to ice. No gritters so everyone home today. Every school shut. -3 at the moment.

We got a dusting in my neck of the Manchester woods, not as much as you! Pavements are lethal due to back ice.

Pixiedust1234 · 10/01/2025 10:22

Thanks for the update. Minus 5? Brrrrrr.

Is there any way to find the temp/weather from the previous day? All the websites list from now onwards. I'd like to know what temp it was last night in my area.

BrokenBrit · 10/01/2025 20:13

-8 in the north west tonight but no weather warnings for ice? Just wondered is there an explanation for that?

Pixiedust1234 · 11/01/2025 00:44

@IDareSay - thank you! I'm trying to keep a diary for something and I keep forgetting to make note of the temperature.

GloriaSmud · 11/01/2025 06:44

Another cold night here ~ my weather station is saying that it's -6.9C here at the moment!

BrokenBrit ~ this is a complete guess but I'm wondering if it's maybe because temperatures have been below/near to freezing during the day, so there's isn't a lot of ice that's melted that then has the chance to freeze again overnight. Anything that's frozen is more a 'dry' ice that can be seen, rather than a slippy, 'black' ice.
(Or it could be that after a week of the temperatures being close to freezing, the metoffice thinks we should be used to ice and snow by now anyway!)

GloriaSmud · 11/01/2025 06:59

And I've just looked out and we've got fog as well ~ that in itself should perhaps come with a weather warning.

justasking111 · 11/01/2025 08:31

I wonder how many garden shrubs, plants are dead now with this sustained cold.

InMySpareTime · 11/01/2025 08:35

I'm just glad we've had a long enough cold snap to kill off some slugs, they destroyed my plants last year.

gingercat02 · 11/01/2025 09:12

Only -3 here apparently but a very thick frost

nannynick · 11/01/2025 09:42

Apple app says -4, my external thermometer says -2.6
So I guess it is somewhere between those. Will find out very shortly as I am about to venture out on a walk.

InMySpareTime · 11/01/2025 10:11

Just found ice on the inside of the front door! The snow from a couple of days ago is still there, any that melts from the sun is replaced by frost overnight so it's pretty much the same level.

BiddyPop · 11/01/2025 10:41

The heating is working well, and I'm really glad that DH and I blocked up a load of wind gaps in windows in the last few weeks!

Outside, it's -2 degrees on my balcony, with a freezing fog, in Brussels. We had some snow overnight on Wednesday, which did a thaw on Thursday afternoon, but a lot of ice yesterday and it looks even icier this morning. I suspect there was another sprinkle of snow overnight as well - and what hadn't melted is now set hard.

GloriaSmud · 15/01/2025 11:41

So after a quiet few days, is there something colder on the way?

(Just emphasising this bit before everyone starts to panic at seeing "Beast from the East" type headlines, as this is how it's looking at the moment....While the depth of cold pooling to the east indicates it would not be as severe as the 2018 spell, it could still bring a renewed risk of snow.)

GloriaSmud · 15/01/2025 11:56

Thoughts from the metoffice and they have similar thoughts on the chance of something colder.....

Sunday, 19th January - Tuesday, 28th January
This period is expected to see a transition, possibly lasting over several days, between the settled, dry, and often dull conditions expected over the next few days, to something more unsettled. Sunday itself is likely to be rather cloudy and cool, with outbreaks of rain in the west drifting slowly eastwards. The start of the following week will most likely see more settled conditions with light winds becoming re-established, with a chance of rain in both the far north and the far south, and a smaller chance that the rain could become more widespread. Later in the week, periods of much wetter and windier weather will most likely become more prevalent, from northwest to southeast, alternatively there is a very small chance of colder, drier, but perhaps wintry, easterly winds.

Wednesday, 29th January - Wednesday, 12th February
A dominant flow from the Atlantic looks likely through this period, resulting in an unsettled, milder and windier than average period. This is likely to result in areas of rain and periods of stronger winds affecting most if not all parts of the UK at times, though with the wettest and windiest weather probably occurring towards the north and west. However, the potential for brief colder spells with associated frost, ice and snow remains, following any deep lows crossing the region.
