As we’re a few weeks away from the start of meteorological Winter (1st December), some weather websites have some thoughts on what the weather might have in store for us over the next few months.

The Weather Outlook started very early, in September Xmas Shock but October's thoughts are here ~ The Weather Outlook.
And Netweather’s thoughts are here.

Farmers have been warning for a while that root crops are rotting in the waterlogged ground. This will affect humans and animals. Expect price increases.

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/01/2024 16:11

Some of the fields round here have ducks swimming on them so I’m not surprised.

grass67 · 02/01/2024 16:28

It's so wet here, every field is saturated, I'm right next to the moors and the water pouring off them is unbelievable, never seen it this bad in 16 years!

I caught the bus back from my walk today and it went through a puddle so deep it flooded the bus 😂 It was astonishing, I was shouting to the driver "oh my god it's coming in" I don't mean a little bit, it was pouring in 😁

tsunami on the bus 🙄

Jakers we're still absorbing it, last hurrah they say before a weather change.

justasking111 · 02/01/2024 17:51

Pretty pictures of the polar vortex. Which I don't really understand

Hurrah! Looks sunny and cold for next week - lovely!

Metoffice long-range forecast - hopefully a chance for us all to dry out (but looks like we'll now need our thermals!)

Sunday, 7th - Tuesday 16th January
Into Sunday and the new week broadly settled conditions quite widely across the country, with colder conditions and some frosty nights (perhaps becoming widespread and severe in time). Initially there are still likely to be some showers, especially around windward coasts in the east, but in general most areas start to see longer, more settled spells develop. Occasional unsettled spells are still possible later in the period, but these generally much more regionalised, and infrequent than of late. As temperatures fall, the chance of any precipitation falling as sleet and snow increases, particularly over high ground and especially over northern parts of the UK, but not exclusively so by any means. As well as frost and ice by night, some freezing fog is likely to develop as well.

Wednesday, 17th - Wednesday, 31st January
Compared to normal, there is an increased chance of colder than average conditions during this period. Currently the chance of widespread severe cold is still deemed low, but still the risk of impacts from cold, including ice and snow is greater than normal. It is likely to be drier than recent weeks, but what does fall is more likely to be of a wintry nature. While there is a chance of brief, unsettled spells, which would bring milder air for a time, it would likely also be accompanied by a period of sleet or snow. However, when, or even if, this would happen is very uncertain, and overall the main theme will be much more in the way of settled conditions through this period.

You can see surface water on our back lawn. The wild ducks are having a ball in the farmers fields.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/01/2024 21:49

Just need to get through this week without floating away. Perhaps another 40mm of rain to come in parts of the south east on Thursday.

EducatingArti · 02/01/2024 21:53

My friend's daughter is delighted as the patch of school ground by the trees where they do Friday Forest School (which she does not enjoy in the wet and cold) has turned into a lake!

justasking111 · 02/01/2024 21:57

Husband was supposed to purchase and plant a weeping willow tree for me in September, he's still faffing about. Tonight he said it would have thrived and grown so quickly if he'd bought one back then for my birthday. 🙄🙄

Bus drivers here just shout ‘bags off the floor everyone’ now.

Looking beyond today, It's going to get colder after the weekend and drier. It looks like temperatures will be become below average with accompanying risks of ice and freezing fog. There's a possibility of snow at times, but no level of detail for that yet.

This weekend is a good time to make sure that your outdoor taps are off and that pipes are lagged. Fleece for vulnerable plants and bring frost prone pots into a warmer place.

BiddyPop · 04/01/2024 09:05

DH is sitting here looking at Carlow Weather's predictions - acknowledges it's a long time away in forecasting terms, but that it will be chilly in Dublin but potentially already be -8 in Brussels when I go back next week and potentially as low as -16 the following week...

Also keeping an eye on Copenhagen as 18yo going to a tournament there for the weekend - below 0 the entire time and feels like -6 most of the time, if not lower.

So we're making sure she has a hat and some thermals. And I am rooting out what is still here for the first few days when I get back before my real winter gear comes off a truck in 2 weeks time...

Latest long-range forecast from the metoffice.....

Monday 8th - Wednesday, 17th January
Next week will begin mostly dry with variable amounts of cloud and some sunny spells. The sunniest weather is likely to be in the north and west, although here some overnight fog patches are possible. Elsewhere, probably mostly cloudy with a cold easterly breeze developing in the south. By the middle of next week, the wind should ease and, with high pressure in charge, there should be a good deal of dry weather. Cloud amounts will continue to be quite variable, but all areas should see some sunshine at times. Much colder than recently, with frost probably becoming quite widespread and some freezing fog patches are possible in places. Beyond next week, conditions are likely to remain cold, with an increasing chance of some wintry showers, particularly in the north.

Thanks Gloria - looks like the weekend to dig out the thermals in readiness and as OYBBK suggests checking lagging etc.
Not looking forward to the cold but if it's drier I'll be happy.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/01/2024 12:51

We may well be reigniting snow watch soon.

Thanks so much for the reminder about the outdoor tap! We have an irrigation system which I managed to break last year by not protecting. Have forgotten about it again this year!

justasking111 · 04/01/2024 13:46

We've run out of green house space, so geraniums under the bedroom window on a bench 🙈

SquirmOfEels · 04/01/2024 15:18

I'm in today's yellow warning area for rain, and in the last 20 minutes or so the light's gone. Not raining yet, but really leaden

News pop ups have said there are a lot of flood warnings already (notably on the Trent and the Severn) and I expect the ground is utterly sodden everywhere so every downpour in the next while is going to be quite likely to least to more flooding.

bookworm14 · 04/01/2024 17:00

Relentless rain in London. I normally like rain but this is getting ridiculous. Glad to hear we’re due for some drier weather next week.
