Given the ongoing flood situation in some parts of Scotland and England, it seems tidiest to create a weather warnings thread, rather than posting many threads! When there are named storms or especially severe weather forecast, I'll try to create individual named storm threads where time allows.

The general autumn weather chat thread is https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4874750-autumn-2023

Autumn 2023 | Mumsnet

As we're a few weeks away from the start of meteorological autumn (1st September), some early thoughts [[https://www.theweatheroutlook.com/weather-new...

This long cold snap is going to bugger up bushes and shrubs 🙈

Tricyrtis2022 · 19/01/2024 12:57

They'll be fine, justasking111, they're supposed to be dormant at this time of year anyway. There may be some frost nip but that's not unexpected. Last year I thought I'd lost some hardy perennials but they were just late getting up.

In the SE, and our cast iron plant is in full yellow bloom and this has stayed on despite heavy frosts and minus 4 degree weather. In fact I even saw a bee by it yesterday. It was 3 degrees 😱

Snowdrops, winter honeysuckle, Christmas box and Mahonia, amongst others, are in full flower at the moment and attracting bees. That's why they're strongly scented, to attract the few bees about. It's rather lovely seeing bumblebees active in mid-winter, especially the big furry ones.

While all eyes are on Storm Isha tomorrow, we have another deep low pressure look likely to affect the Uk Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Warnings have been issued for the northern half of the UK. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2024-01-23

Its possible this may become another named storm.

😩

TheOhGodOfHangovers · 20/01/2024 13:58

And we’ve snowy rain today.

Does anyone know how to reactivate our hibernation gene?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2024 14:02

The furthest we've got in the alphabet with Met Office named storms is K. This was in the 2015-2016 season, when the Met Office first started naming their storms.

Continued eyes of course on tonights storm, but Tuesday/Wednesday also still looks fierce. I won't start a separate thread on this unless it is named. I suspect it will be.

After Jocelyn, it looks like we get some respite, perhaps for a couple of weeks.

I take my eyes off things for a couple of days and the jet stream decides to wander back over the UK by mid week.

After a brief repite from wind and freezing temps in the NE,we did some gardening at the weekend. It is now set in rain. You promised me a dry settled spell @OhYouBadBadKitten 🤔

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2024 20:33

Did you not enjoy your dry settled spell then @gingercat02 ? Grin

This winter is stupid.

Raining 🐈 and 🐕 today. But it's warm. We've turned the heating off in the evening the log burner is sufficient.

Zero chance of ☃️☃️ boo hoo

It's not even warm here. Just the 🐈‍⬛&🐕 bit (love that BTW)

While most eyes are on the snow warnings, poor old southerners are back to rain warnings from tomorrow. Splish splash.

Weirdly after telling us we'd have heavy rain for four days it's just been overcast. Not that I'm complaining. It's so warm as well today. I'm cleaning in a teeshirt today.
