Given the ongoing flood situation in some parts of Scotland and England, it seems tidiest to create a weather warnings thread, rather than posting many threads! When there are named storms or especially severe weather forecast, I'll try to create individual named storm threads where time allows.

The general autumn weather chat thread is https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4874750-autumn-2023

Lots of weather warnings for tomorrow, with a lot of rain falling onto saturated ground again. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-12-07

Wind warning for Thursday. Looks like there could also be quite a bit of rain as well, from Wednesday onwards for Scotland.

I am in a Snow & Ice warning area, and it is snowing, settling on cars, starting to settle on ground.

Not planning to drive anywhere for the next few days. Will head out for a walk later but I may need my hike boots for extra grip.

I fully expect to be needing to highlight Saturdays warnings too in the next day or so.

Oh Joy. I am driving DD back home after the Christmas break. The trains are just too unreliable these days, and she has too much stuff to take back. It is very wet here in South Yorkshire just now.

More warnings for today and tomorrow. More rain. More wind. Gusting to around 50mph inland, closer perhaps to 70mph along coasts. What joy.

I can imagine the chorus of 'FFS' from this. Hang in there, it is set to dry out after the weekend.

Heavy rain warnings covering much of the south and south east England I'm afraid. Lots of uncertainty, but rainfall totals of between 20mm-50mm are possible in this area. Added on top of current flooded areas, this is very unwelcome.

Argh. The ground is absolutely saturated.

Tricyrtis2022 · 03/01/2024 12:40

Just been to my main place of work, a large garden, to assess storm damage (not too bad!). Not only is the ground completely sodden, a flock of sheep got in because walkers left a field gate open and the entire lawn, acres of it, is pocked with hoof prints and sheep shit. On drier ground it wouldn't have been so bad but with the ground being so soft it looks terrible.

Loads of flooded roads here yesterday.

It's official - we have had the wettest year in South Yorkshire since records began.
The second wettest July
The wettest autumn
The second wettest December

Derwent dam is a raging torrent just now.

Tricyrtis2022 · 03/01/2024 12:58

The one upside for me is that the new trees don't need endless watering, but that's about it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/01/2024 13:08

oh no Tri Sad people can be so thoughtless.

Im sure you've checked the gate to see that it opens and shuts ok. With the rain swelling things and moving the ground I've had to really heave some some gates to get them to open and shut recently. It's worse than usual.

The wood has expanded, Kitten, but the gates are fine. It's just people being careless 😥

This winter SUCKS.

HappyNewYears · 03/01/2024 22:25

Tonight’s news said many areas have had the average January rainfall already.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/01/2024 22:43

I'm coping by looking for the first tiny hints of Spring. The sun is setting a little later now.
