It is summer isn’t it? Is it?

Rain, wind, cool, feels like October.

Also they call temperatures under 30 degrees "really hot" or "unbearably hot" 😆They're don't know what "hot" is!

This. It's ridiculous. Some people seem to have a temperature tolerance spanning a range of 5°!

This "summer" has been horrific. A grey and depressing winter, a grey and depressing spring, followed by any periods of sunshine and moderate temperatures being ruined by strong, icy winds.

Then just two weeks of semi-decent weather where you could go out without a coat, then back to this endless grey/ cloud/ unpredictability: I think that's the worst part, that the forecasts aren't even remotely reliable. It says sunshine then it's not, it says rain then it's not. So you can't plan anything nice outdoors because it will likely be spoiled. The endless cloud and not being able to see the sky and the grey light is depressing. It looks sunny, you go outside, then ten minutes later the sun is blocked by cloud again and it's cold.

Horrible, especially now children are on school holidays and want to enjoy their freedom to play outside and go on trips etc. I really hope we get at least one decent period of sustained sunshine of 25° plus consistently for several weeks. Having vaguely summer weather suitable for the beach or picnics or paddling pools etc out of the entire year isn't too much to ask, is it? Hmm

GloriaSmud · 21/07/2023 15:37

My weather station said it was 8C when I got up this morning. I was saying to DD1 as I put a load of clothes away, that I've realised I've only worn summer dresses 3 or 4 times this year. Usually it's one dress after another but I'm wearing yet another pair of jeans and a t-shirt today. And I've got a fleece jacket on as well - that's only one step away from a winter jumper for me!

madeinmanc · 21/07/2023 15:46

Yeah, I'm also bitterly disappointed because I've had some lovely dresses to wear this year for the first time in years and it's not looking like there's going to be anything more than a couple more chances to wear them 😢

I was really enjoying swanning round in my lovely dresses after work! Without a bloody cardigan over them I mean.

Glemanam · 21/07/2023 16:35

It's crap.

Feckin hell, I'm not apologising for wanting something resembling nice weather but at least a few weeks of the year.

My daughter is disabled and we are so cooped up most of the year as its hard to get her out in shit weather. Winter goes on forever for us. It'd just be nice to have something dry between 18-25 for a few weeks. And will the wind just piss the hell off!!!

Delatron · 21/07/2023 17:02

Yes it’s the wind that is really winding me up. I will sit outside even if it’s in the teens with a bit of sun but not if it’s blowing a gale. Really unpleasant.

madeinmanc · 21/07/2023 17:17

I think I can handle it not being warm but it's the overcast/grey/wind that's truly depressing. At least in similar temperatures in spring it can be sunny and clear, if not warm, and people still get out in it and you can feel the mood lift.

And sorry you and your daughter can't get out, @Glemanam, it's also a shame not to see the retired people near me out and about like they are when it's sunny.

I do really envy people with those massive glass extensions/bifold doors/conservatories/garden rooms for that reason. They can still get some light in this weather.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 21/07/2023 21:10

I’ve just put the heating on🫤

July is meant to be the warmest month of the year.

Children and I all have some sort of cold virus in July 😶 Unable to tell if it's gunna rain or not over cast in the south with a bit of sun is confusing.

ListenLinda · 22/07/2023 08:30

Fed up of it now. First weekend of the summer holidays and its the same as it has been for 3 weeks. Rain Rain Rain. And raining all the way through to next weekend.

Peridot1 · 22/07/2023 08:40

It’s bloody miserable. So fed up with it. It really affects my mood.

Fatkittythinkitty · 22/07/2023 08:43

Is this summer worse than normal so far or is it just my perception? It really does feel like autumn. I like autumn but in October after we've actually had summer.

I know we had some nice weather in June and I expected that to break but I didn't expect weeks of relentless rain and temperatures this low. I'm having to put the lights on every morning and wearing a jumper. It's depressing and there's no end in sight according to the weather forecast.

Backstreets · 22/07/2023 08:52

June was LOVELY and I should have put it to (even) better use, I really didn’t expect it to be all over by the time my holidays arrived :/
since abroad travel was so expensive during school hols I booked a flight somewhere nice in September, so at least I have a shot at seeing the sun again before 2024

Thisisthescene · 22/07/2023 09:38

It's sooo depressing, I keep saying to myself that we're so lucky not to be crucified in 40-50 degree heat but omg just give us a bit of warmth. Today's forecast is just awful yet again. I've got a load of lovely new summer clothes that I bought at the beginning of the year and they're just sitting on the rail, completely unworn. Also in jeans and jumpers here. My DH says oh it could be lovely in Sept etc but it's just not the same, it's the lovely, long summer nights that we all crave even if just for a few weeks. Just bloody depressing.

Thisisthescene · 22/07/2023 09:39

Also can't afford a holiday so feels never ending

Bonfire23 · 22/07/2023 09:44

I don't even particularly like hot weather but this is awful. It's done nothing but rain
Woke up to this. Meant to be swimming in the reservoir tomorrow Confused

I agree. It is often nice in September but it’s not the same as the nights are drawing in so you don’t get those lovely warm light evenings where you can sit outside.

You don't need a reservoir, that puddle should do the trick.

This is beyond bad.

Bonfire23 · 22/07/2023 10:41

@userxx I'm contemplating just standing outside instead of showering

GloriaSmud · 22/07/2023 11:02

Long range forecast from the metoffice gives some hope for August.

"August is likely to see a continuation of unsettled conditions at first, with a mixture of scattered showers and sunny spells, between periods of more general cloud, wind and rain. Towards the middle of the month, a gradual settling down of conditions remains the most likely trend, with longer periods of drier weather and more sunshine compared with previous weeks developing. Temperatures are likely to be cooler than average at first, but with the signal for improving conditions through the period a gradual upward trend in temperatures to average, with a slightly higher than normal chance of above average temperatures by the end of the period.

@Backstreets June was LOVELY and I should have put it to (even) better use, I really didn’t expect it to be all over by the time my holidays arrived :/

I'm absolutely kicking myself because I had a medical procedure done in late May and missed almost all of that late May/June beautiful weather because I was mainly recovering and tired. I kept on saying to people half-jokingly "I suppose this will be it for the summer this year" and everyone kept on saying that it was only June, there would be more etc.

I really wish I'd rescheduled. 😥

It was lovely in May and June, yet you still have posters moaning and whining and starting threads saying how SHIT the weather is this year. Conveniently forgetting the lovely May and June ... Wink When it's 32C in August, these same people will be carping and grumbling that it's toooooo hot!

Some people just LOVE to gripe and moan.

DizzyRascal · 22/07/2023 12:14

Climate change is making the jet stream more stable and more extreme at the same time. This means we will have more extreme weather that lasts longer.
I have been noticing this for the last decade. The UK used to have mild weather, rarely really hot, interspersed with frequent rain. Now it seems to be either weeks on end of rain followed by weeks on end of drought. One extreme to the other. I miss British weather, but more importantly if you are trying to grow food this extreme weather is a disaster and that really scares me.
Having said that, Summer here is mid May to Mid August, which is where Autumn starts. The English school summer holidays have nothing to do with when Summer actually is in this country.

madeinmanc · 22/07/2023 12:19

@PurpleButterflyWings Yes, because we should be able to expect more than a few weeks in May and June 🙄

What are you saying? That we should be happy with a rainy, grey and cold July, August and September? It's meant to be summer now. Your attitude is bizarre, frankly. And I'm not sure why you'd choose to highlight my comment where I'm saying that I actually missed out on those scarce weeks of warmth because I was ill to make your point unless you wanted to be deliberately vindictive and nasty. Seems to be fairly common attitude amongst those who are militant about their enjoyment of the cold and rain.

In fact, I don't believe you people do enjoy it, you just want to be contrary and show off how "positive" you are in the face of bad weather in a sort of "weather virtue signalling" contest.

Look at me! I don't complain! I love the rain and the cold! I don't care if the elderly , disabled and unwell suffer! I'M SOO POSITIVE and UNCOMPLAINING! Look at meee, I'm so great! Why aren't you all like meeee? 🙄

It was dry in May but not particularly warm. We went away in the UK at half term and it was quite chilly. Warmed up at the beginning of June. Then all went to pot at the end of June.

That sounds shit. Sorry.

We had so many posters moaning on here saying that it was going to be like last year (with zero evidence that it would be).
