It is summer isn’t it? Is it?

Rain, wind, cool, feels like October.

20c with sun and a breeze is plenty for me anymore I find it hard. Gunna be a long winter If its like this now

EddieMunsen · 14/07/2023 13:46

We had our summer - it was in June. I find it funny that people expect July/August to be hot when year after year summer comes May/June, and then we tend to have an Indian summer in Sept/Oct.😬

Whitewolf2 · 14/07/2023 13:48

We have had a great run of weather though, and I’d rather we have a few days of rain than 35 degrees like last year. It’s horrible not sleeping due to heat!

LakeTiticaca · 14/07/2023 13:53

Not particularly unusual in the UK to have a run of good weather then all goes to shit. Then another run of good weather .

Peridot1 · 14/07/2023 13:55

April and May weren’t great here. We are in Hampshire and got caught in the jet stream which made it dry and sunny but the wind was freezing. June was lovely. It’s been grey and cool and downright bloody depressing since. I will admit the garden needed the rain and I don’t mind the odd wet day but the constant grey skies just makes me depressed. Really affects my mood.

BodegaSushi · 14/07/2023 13:56

I don't get why UK summer has to be all or nothing. It doesn't have to be 30s++++ but surely it can just be sunny and breezy in the high 20s?

omgsally · 14/07/2023 12:55

I'm thrilled. I get actual dread when I see the temperature start rising, so I have everything crossed that it continues like this 😁

I hate the heat too but I'd like to have warmth and blue skies! Sun doesn't have to mean sweltering

Unless you live higher than 5 miles above the Earth's surface you didn't get caught in the jet stream.

What is the jet stream?

The jet stream is a core of strong winds around 5 to 7 miles above the Earth’s surface, blowing from west to east.

You're all bonkers! It is summer! warm and apart from the last couple of days very dry.
Where do you live that you think every day june to September ought to be over 20 degrees?

@hexsnidgett I can't remember the last time I watered my pots and baskets. There hasn't been a day when it hasn't rained here for at least 2 weeks and probably longer - and looking at the forecast that's set to continue for the next 7 days at least.

Well that is what I saw it described as in the news. Apologies if I am not a scientific expert.

Daftasabroom · 14/07/2023 14:17

No worries, I work in STEM research and despair at the quality of journalism.

Climate change is making the jet stream more stable and more extreme at the same time. This means we will have more extreme weather that lasts longer.

So the Cerberus event in Europe has caused ground temperatures to reach 60 C. Hot air rises which sucks in cooler moist air from oceans, that's what the UK is getting now.

Springbecamethesummer · 14/07/2023 14:22

It's a welcome relief here where l live, June was scorching hot throughout with zero rain, and up until a couple of days ago still lovely and warm.

PicturesOfLily · 14/07/2023 14:30

It definitely feels autumnal. It’s very annoying as all the seeds/leaves are being blown off the tree outside and all over the path (and my car!) but it’s too wet to go out and sweep them up. The weeds in my yard seem to love it too. We had a toddle event with nursery 2 weeks ago and whilst it stayed dry, it was so windy and cold it definitely felt like October and not July! Wet school run coming up!

Colliewobblerr23 · 14/07/2023 13:43

It reminds me of the summer of 2007 where it was SO wet we all wore shorts and wellies (even the lads!). The town and motorways were constantly flooded. And it was like Glastonbury for the whole season....Anyone remember the Tewkesbury flooding?

It was so hot too. And never ending.

I certainly do remember! It was Gloucester Tewksbury and Cheltenham. I had to collect my water from a bowser at the end of the street several times a day for nearly 3 weeks. The water supply was contaminated from the floods. We went to a hotel in Birmingham one night just for a shower!!

hoochycrone · 14/07/2023 14:49

daftasabroom obviously not like your user name. Brilliant explanation Grin
Tamping it down in West Yorkshire. Weather weird-ing indeed.

Yorkshiredolls · 14/07/2023 14:53

May/ June was bone dry and bordering on draught again, I’m grateful for this rain, my garden plants are recovering. It won’t last, be sunny again soon.

ActDottie · 14/07/2023 15:03

Toohotforchips · 14/07/2023 11:35

I normally love sunshine, warmth and summer but I'm so grateful for the cool, wet weather at the moment. Watching the unbearable heatwave that southern Europe is experiencing makes me glad for the cooler temperatures.

I know the heat will come at some point this summer, but I hated the 37 degrees we got last year and looked longingly at the places on the weather maps where it was a pleasant 21 degrees!

This I’m enjoying the cooler rainier weather. Was also wonderful walking the dogs at lunch as no one was around when it’s normally so busy this time of year.

mambojambodothetango · 14/07/2023 15:06

Are you all forgetting it was very warm with no rain at all for the whole of June? I'm fine with a bit of cooler temperatures (can't sleep when too warm) and the gardens and reservoirs need the rain. It'll be hot and dry again before we know it and you'll all be moaning then too!

MotherofPearl · 14/07/2023 15:22

I'm thoroughly enjoying this cooler weather, and appreciate the rain. I'd far rather this than the blistering heat over in Europe at the moment.

EddieMunsen · 14/07/2023 15:24

We are so lucky in the UK, because we get lots of rainfall. Sadly we have inept and/or corrupt water companies and poor infrastructure and so we waste so much of it.

Caspianberg · 14/07/2023 15:50

We have it all in central/ south Europe. It’s been hovering at 35-40 for weeks.

bookworm14 · 14/07/2023 15:53

I’m fine with it. As others have said, in large parts of the country there was literally no rainfall at all in June. The plants desperately need the rain.

morelippy · 14/07/2023 16:05

Well it's torrential here. It's cold, dark and non stop.. vile

finewelshcheese · 14/07/2023 16:06

It's not that cold here, about 16. This rain can fuck right off though.
