Old thread:https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4767111-spring-weather-watch?page=6&reply=126854914

After the dramatic weather for some over the last few days, mostly covered in the Thunderstorm warning threads, I think it's time to switch to a new thread. After all, we are two weeks into meteorological summer.

Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ... It...

Urgh i'm at the races Saturday - forecast has been changing constantly but looks like we are going to be having a little bit of rain at least :(

First time out with DH and no kids in over a year :'(

rileynexttime · 01/08/2023 10:51

@justasking111 whereabouts are you ?
Awful to be swept out to sea Sad

North Wales the man was swept away in Treaddur Bay. Combination of the moon, big tides, stormy conditions in the Irish sea.

The water is so stirred up there's no fishing to be had and on that coastline the water board have had to discharge sewage because the processing plant has been overwhelmed due to rain run off.

rileynexttime · 01/08/2023 12:40

Oh dear. A perfect storm as they say.

nannynick · 02/08/2023 09:44

Looks like another nice day where I am today, on North East coast of Scotland.

Not always dry, sunny here. Wind and rain is the usual situation but dry and sunny now for days, with occasional drizzle.

That is clearly the place to be NannyNick!

In the meantime, the Met Office have extended their thunderstorm warnings southwards and northwards. The main hazard is torrential downpours, where they occur.

Looking ahead to Saturday, while there is plenty of uncertainty, it looks like another deep area of low pressure could affect the UK. Some models show gusts of 70mph through the Bristol channel.

I'm optimistic about an improvement mid week next week.

I saw this on the BBC yesterday. Living in the NW, I can’t work out whether I feel victimised or vindicated that it was as bad as I thought!

I think I blame Brexit. Clearly changes to free movement of jet streams are at fault.

GloriaSmud · 02/08/2023 12:07

GFS is still looking hopeful for better weather next week and the metoffice thinks so too, although still saying unsettled at times.

6th-15th August
A mix of sunshine and showers initially, these most frequent and heaviest in the northwest, with the brightest conditions likely in the south, feeling more pleasant here. Changeable, often unsettled conditions, at least to start the following week, with showers and longer spells of rain likely, but some drier and brighter interludes, with these looking increasingly likely by the end of the week. Winds generally light to moderate, with a continued risk of strong winds at times with temperatures remaining below average. Beyond this, while changeable conditions are never too far away indications are that more settled conditions become the more likely scenario, but interspersed still with some more unsettled weather. Temperatures continue to be mostly below average although should start to recover through the period.

16-30th August
During the second half of August, there is a greater chance of more settled spells developing, with warmer and drier conditions becoming slightly more likely than the unseasonably unsettled weather of July. However, unsettled conditions are never too far away and so there will likely still be some spells of rain or showers for many areas from time to time. Temperatures look like they will recover to at least average, or a little above, however any prolonged dry or hot spells appear to be unlikely.

justasking111 · 02/08/2023 12:58

Sunshine here. I panicked got washing done yesterday. It's warm too. I'm waiting for Noah's ark weather

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/08/2023 14:49

Not as wet and windy as I expected so far. Could be famous last words.

heldinadream · 02/08/2023 16:10

Here I am, disappointedly waiting for promised storms. Has been quite rainy but right now it's pleasant and dry.
I love a storm. Feel a bit cheated TBH. 😂

countrygirl99 · 02/08/2023 16:13

DH just came home and said "didn't it hammer it down at lunchtime". He was 2 miles away, we got a few spits.

Mutabiliss · 02/08/2023 16:31

Absolutely battering it down here in Essex, but nowhere near as windy as I expected.

I'm going to an outdoor event on Saturday afternoon in London and am a bit concerned about the weather. Actually wondering if they'll cancel, as rain and high winds will make it fairly horrible/almost impossible.

GloriaSmud · 02/08/2023 16:48

Lots of showers showing up on the Netweather radar and it's gone quite dark here (Leicester)

Mutabiliss - looking at the GFS, it's possible. I'm wondering if the metoffice might issue some wind/rain warnings because Saturday looks really grim.

I would be very surprised if the Met Office don't issue warnings for Saturday.

I'm trying to do garden jobs this afternoon. I'm spending more time sitting on my bum inside than I am getting on with anything.

I must have chosen the right place to go on holiday. Lovely day here. BBQ this evening. Tomorrow forecast is for wind but that is not unusual... spa day so wind won't disrupt that plan.

Hope you all don't get too wet.

Louisianna16 · 02/08/2023 17:30

Here in South Shropshire on the border with Herefordshire and Wales, it's been a lovely warm and sunny/ verging on hot day. One of the nicest we've had! It's a bit windy now but no sign of rain or storms so far.

I agree the Met has not been as reliable recently. The BBC weather app is very hit and miss generally and frequently changes forecasts on an hourly basis

MotherOfCatBoy · 02/08/2023 20:47

We’ve been walking the Black Mountains today and decided to stay off the very high ground because of thunderstorm risk - took a lower route and there was a lot of rain. Hills running with streams. Cleared up late afternoon to beautiful sunshine.

countrygirl99 · 02/08/2023 20:56

I'm out on a checkpoint in the middle of the countryside Saturday. Not all the checkpoints are accessible by car so might not even have any shelter 😟

Doghairismyglitter · 02/08/2023 21:22

It’s been absolutely torrential in the SW today and incredibly windy to say the least! Felt like middle of October weather

Pixiedust1234 · 02/08/2023 23:08

I'm getting sick and tired of not being able to put washing on the line. Even if it's warm with odd sunshine patches we have too many dark grey clouds to risk it (well, the we means me). DH has tried but he never manages to keep it out for more than an hour and since he doesn't cloud watch sometimes the washing comes in wetter than it went out *sighs

Loved the Brexit comment earlier 😂

megletthesecond · 03/08/2023 07:52

pix I've been managing to put washing out in Hampshire but 16yo DS is left with strict instructions to bring it in if it rains or heaven help him. I have to keep checking the weather app at work and messaging him. Hoping for two loads today 🤞.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2023 11:27

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2023-08-05 Saturdays wind warnings along the SW and southern coast and into southern Wales. Although the wind speeds at present don't look severe, compared to an autumn gale, they will bring trees down and cause camping/marquee havoc.
