Old thread:https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4767111-spring-weather-watch?page=6&reply=126854914

After the dramatic weather for some over the last few days, mostly covered in the Thunderstorm warning threads, I think it's time to switch to a new thread. After all, we are two weeks into meteorological summer.

Page 24 | Spring Weather watch | Mumsnet

Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ... It...

I don't suppose there's a simple/ish explanation for this cool weather ?
I'm SE London and particularly struck by v how breezy it has been. And how cold the nights.
Apologies if I've missed this.

The jet stream is plonked over us, sometimes wobbling under us, putting us in the path of low pressure systems.

Thank you OMBK. Smile
i'll have a look at that picture(not sure of correct term ) and have a think.

rileynexttime · 31/07/2023 08:22

Lordy lordy, how ignorant I am.
Having googled I see that the jet stream is air movement.
I thought it referred to Ocean currentsBlush
going to have a read with my cup of tEA.

rileynexttime · 31/07/2023 08:37

But I'm not watching YouTube videos that use the term deep dive.

In my view language should not evolve and we should still be theeing and thouing eachother.

I'll be quiet now.

We are going to Norway next week. It's not looking good is it...

Also, the met office reports keep being way out of line. The heavy rain solidly from 12 today arrived about 3.30 and didn't last that long.

I’d noticed that. The app is usually pretty reliable for a short term forecast but it’s been all over the place for about a month now.

I did too, so at least you aren't alone!

rileynexttime · 31/07/2023 10:58

Good to know. I've learned that on MN one is never alone !

We're in Austria which has had forecasts of rain / thunderstorms every day since our arrival 4 days ago. We got caught in a brief shower in the mountains and avoided another in a church. Otherwise it's been dry and right now is sunny and warm. So don't be too dismayed

I've noticed the met office reports being rubbish recently too. I wonder if there's a reason? Today, for instance, it says no rain all day (well, 10% chance which usually means no rain). It's definitely raining quite hard, right now.

justasking111 · 31/07/2023 11:34

The jet stream is like that nursery rhyme

Jelly on a plate, wobble wobble, wibble wobble. 😂

GloriaSmud · 31/07/2023 11:50

justasking - 😀

It's waaaaay ahead but the GFS for next week - from Wednesday onwards looks warmer/drier. Oh please let it be so 🙏

Notonthestairs · 31/07/2023 12:45

Tweet from the Met Office illustrating where the jet stream is at the moment.

"Little change in the overall weather story next week with Atlantic weather systems driven by a southerly tracking jet stream remaining in charge 👇"

Thought some might find it interesting.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/07/2023 13:37

There are increasing early signs that as Gloria says, from mid week next week it could get warmer, less windy and drier. Hang in there people!

I remember someone on here explaining that the reason the BBC and the Met Office predict totally different weather is because the BBC now buys its forecast from a cheaper source outside the UK. I've noticed the BBC forecast tends to be more accurate.

countrygirl99 · 31/07/2023 14:41

@OhYouBadBadKitten I hope it does improve middle of next week. My son and DIL are coming over from Finland for a wedding. At the moment the weather is colder and wetter than their holiday in the Arctic Circle

I shall pray to Nordic weather gods.

That's not quite right. The BBC get their forecasts from a private organisation called DTN. DTN has offices and forecasters based in the UK as well as lots of other countries.

It is difficult to get the exact timing and location of showers. It is even more difficult to represent this uncertainty on weather apps and meteograms (those little icon forecasts). It is a pain in the bum though!

Thanks for the glimmers of hope - just spotted a 25 degree day pop up on the forecast for next Thursday. Fingers crossed.

@GloriaSmud that's nasty. Parts of Europe too

justasking111 · 01/08/2023 10:40

Since Saturday we've had strong winds, rough seas and rain. Someone was swept out to sea on Saturday, no sign of them yet.

I'm resigned now to lousy weather. We've got agricultural shows we planned to visit amongst other amusements with the families. So far we've done some crabbing, the cinema and a garden centre. They're at out of school clubs thankfully, otherwise their summer is a washout 😓

rileynexttime · 01/08/2023 10:51

@justasking111 whereabouts are you ?
Awful to be swept out to sea Sad
