Old thread:https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4767111-spring-weather-watch?page=6&reply=126854914

After the dramatic weather for some over the last few days, mostly covered in the Thunderstorm warning threads, I think it's time to switch to a new thread. After all, we are two weeks into meteorological summer.

Page 24 | Spring Weather watch | Mumsnet

Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ... It...

So Im going to be camping in devon this weekend.

How bad is a wind warning.....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2023 11:39

Gusts probably to about 55mph. Im about to head out. Back later.

OP posts:
OnionBhajis · 03/08/2023 12:00

Oh heck 😔. A quick Google says over 30mph is tricky business.

We're camping for several days so really hope we cna survive the Saturday!

GloriaSmud · 03/08/2023 18:40

So we were right about Saturday getting some weather warnings, OYBBK!

Today started off quite nice but we got a real soaking when we had torrential rain during FosterDog's walk here (Leicester) this afternoon. I said to DD1 it was 10% dog walk and 90% sheltering under trees!

Racingadmin · 03/08/2023 20:00

Working at the Goodwood racing festival this week . Yesterday was horrendous and some of the hospitality marquees were rather loud and wobbly - sounds even worse for Saturday

Whole racecourse is very exposed at the best of times . Good luck to those camping this weekend

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2023 21:03

Forgot to come back!
onionbhajis, this isn't very sensible advice, but we have camped in similar conditions. Some tents are better than others. Our pop up tent kept trying to put itself away one storm. That wasn't great!

Think about wind direction and use hedges and your car as shelter. Don't use tall trees as shelter obviously. Double guy and take duct tape with you for emergency repairs.

Good luck for Saturday Racingadmin I take it there are protocols for self disassembling marquees?

This is an extremely good article about some of the complexities of weather forecasting. https://www.ft.com/content/b4fd60f2-ea5c-4dd0-8116-2d5e0d01e0ef

I asked MN to withdraw the previous post because I was a bit naughty and shared a way to get round the paywall. I then looked up whether that was an issue and realised it might get MN into trouble, so reported it.

I've started a Storm Antoni post. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4864514-storm-antoni-warning?latest=1

Storm Antoni warning | Mumsnet

[confused] So the Met Office have named tomorrows storm as Storm Antoni. It's our first named storm of the 22/23 season. The season ends at the end o...

After a cold start glorious this Afternoon. Family going to a lodge/caravan tomorrow 🙈

WoolyMammoth55 · 04/08/2023 17:00

Good luck to all the campers this weekend! I'm hunkering down myself.

Coincidentally, in early May (back on the Spring thread) when there was no sign of the sun I posted about booking a forest school outdoors birthday party for my son and asked for good vibes. It worked! It was 23 degrees and sunny that day, and was the start of a lovely 4 weeks!

So since we are off to Cornwall for a few days from Sunday 13th, I'm going to ask for everyone's good vibes again :) and hope I can miraculously kick off some sort of extended Indian summer-ish heatwave.

Everyone in?

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/08/2023 17:04

Comfort when camping in storms/heavy rain is directly related to the quality and price of the tent IME.

Delatron · 04/08/2023 17:06

It’s looking warm from next Thursday?

bentneckwine1 · 04/08/2023 17:16

We were seasoned campers in Blackpool during the Big storm of 1987 - the new tent collapsed in on itself during the night.

The insurance company refused to pay out as it was an ‘act of god’.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/08/2023 18:10

It does look much better from later on next week. I can't promise an extended warm period at this point though. I'm crossing my fingers that it will be for my own holiday!

Are we sure we haven’t skipped straight to October?
My tomatoes have given up trying to grow.

lingmerth · 04/08/2023 22:44

We're in our tourer van in South Devon. Have battened down the hatches for the storm. Although the weather speeds look quite scary there isn't much rain forecast for the afternoon. Hoping for the best preparing for the worst!

BiddyPop · 05/08/2023 09:11

Rather than clutter the storm thread as it's more longer term, I figured I'd post the cheerful news item in the Irish Times newspaper this morning (can't link sorry) that the meteorologists believe we'll have quite an "interesting" autumn, with more storm activity than usual, because the oceans are so warm. Which makes sense to me as I know the hurricanes coming across the Caribbean and southern US states are caused by warmer water temps interacting with the air, and lots of evaporation leading to big rain cells.

countrygirl99 · 05/08/2023 09:46

Does a wet summer lead to a higher risk of flooding in the winter?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/08/2023 18:29

I don't know Countrygirl. I guess it depends on how dry Autumn is.

I do also think that this Autumn could be rather 'interesting'. I'll be getting on with pruning dodgy shrubs in the next few weeks I think and getting our old gate repaired.

There's interesting theories emerging about the Tonga undersea volcano eruption back in January which rather than releasing sulphur dioxide forced enormous amounts of steam vapour 7 miles up reaching the stratosphere.
The sonic boom from it was heard in Alaska.

As well as the predictable tsunami etc. It's the long term effects on our weather this summer that the scientific community are studying re weather patterns.

It's well worth a look see

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/08/2023 19:26

I'd not seen that JustAsking. I'll have a look. Theres ceetainly some theories that we had been artificially accidentally supressing warming through sulphur emissions from shipping. New legislation has reduced those emissions drastically, which may be leading to the step change in surface sea temperatures. Bit ironic really if pollution has been helping us in one sense.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/08/2023 18:58

Sadly it doesn't look like we are going to hold on to the warmth for very long next week, with a return to unsettled and at times, thundery conditions.

Sad

Confused

I only want it dry for a couple of days, just so I can mow the swamp.
