Old thread:https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4767111-spring-weather-watch?page=6&reply=126854914

After the dramatic weather for some over the last few days, mostly covered in the Thunderstorm warning threads, I think it's time to switch to a new thread. After all, we are two weeks into meteorological summer.

Page 24 | Spring Weather watch | Mumsnet

Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ... It...

Saturday looks bloody awful (in the SE) just seen a weather warning for high winds and showers forecast too. So no chance of an outdoor BBQ sob. Shame for all those with outdoor events planned…

Yes the forecast is dismal for the next couple of days. We've had to postpone some plans. But nothing to compared to anyone planning wedding/marquee events this weekend.

justasking111 · 13/07/2023 19:12

Seeing Europe I'm not going to complain but enjoy the gap between showers.

Notonthestairs · 13/07/2023 19:17

Yes of course you are right - that is a reality check. I wouldn't swop high winds for 48 degrees.

Delatron · 13/07/2023 19:39

I guess we need to look at it as the low pressure over us is blocking the awful heat from being sucked up towards us. 40+ is horrific and as a country we don’t deal well with those high temperatures.

bookworm14 · 13/07/2023 19:48

I would rather have this cool, showery weather forever than 40-plus degree heat. Sorry, heat lovers…

Delatron · 13/07/2023 19:53

I think anyone would prefer cool showers to 40 degrees to be fair. Even those that like the heat.

But if I could choose a nice 25 degrees with little breeze would be perfect.

I agree - the dismal windy forecast suits me down to the ground. The heatwave on the continent looks just awful.

Delatron · 13/07/2023 19:55

I don’t think anyone wants it to be 40 degrees here. It’s just a shame that this windy/cooler/showery weather is probably disrupting wedding plans and outdoor events.

justasking111 · 13/07/2023 20:02

Did the school fair today. This morning cloudy but at lunchtime the sun came out and it was scorching weather station said 26c. Working on the stalls you needed water. At 6pm it clouded over again. There's plenty of breeze on the coast.

We don't have Aircon in this country so it's a different kettle of fish.

I read that about 10% of Europe has AC compared to 90% of the US but they do at least have buildings better built for hot weather plus outside shutters. I totally get the disappointment in having showery, cooler weather in July when so many outdoor events have been planned, but I still can't help feeling deeply grateful that we are being protected from experiencing the current heatwave. It could so easily be us.

Are temperatures still set to climb drastically in the last 2 weeks of July as the media keeps claiming?

Delatron · 13/07/2023 21:07

I don’t think they are forecasting a heatwave here anymore. I think the media were just speculating again. I do agree that it’s a relief to be spared the awful temperatures that they are seeing in Europe.

GloriaSmud · 13/07/2023 22:12

I’m not seeing any signs of extreme temperatures for the last few weeks of this month- GFS says 24 or25C but that’s really just the South East, so think the media are talking rubbish!

In the meantime, looks like we’re in for a windy few days as low pressure passes close by. We’re on holiday just outside Caernarfon at the moment and are covered by tomorrow’s weather warning. Together with heavy rain, it’s looking grim!

SweetStrawberrie · 13/07/2023 22:14

Just out of interest, anyone who understands 'weather' talk - what is the long range forecast for the UK?

Lot of vagueness (understandably) but i'm getting the impression majority of july/even beginning of August looks to be showers?

GloriaSmud · 13/07/2023 22:26

SweetStrawberrie I’d say that’s about right. Nothing extreme showing- just sunshine and showers, probably a few thunderstorms thrown in occasionally. Unfortunately it isn’t looking especially warm, maybe the SE seeing 24/25C but 17-20C further north and cooler up towards Scotland so not feeling very ‘summer.’

megletthesecond · 13/07/2023 22:34

I'm sure I'm not usually in bedsocks and a hoodie in July.

Sunnysunbun · 13/07/2023 23:06

I’m loving the London weather. It’s mostly been good this week.

Thanks - I quite like low to mid 20s and I am in the south but yes it doesn't feel very summery atm. A shame, as a lot of the year in this country is cold! Although I suppose if you do not like heat it's wonderful!

countrygirl99 · 14/07/2023 08:04

We need dry weather for the next few weeks for harvest.

bookworm14 · 14/07/2023 08:06

49mph winds forecast in London tomorrow. WTF is that about?

justasking111 · 14/07/2023 12:54

Well I've hung out some washing, bit of a breeze but humid. Might be on the line for a while 😂😂

countrygirl99 · 14/07/2023 12:58

Been raining since about 9 here. Washing hone in the tumble dryer as I've given up waiting for a day when the forecast to be ok. Twice this week I've not bothered because of forecast morning rain and it hasn't rained until late afternoon. Now the forecast is rain for the next 2 days and I'm running out of knickers.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/07/2023 13:00

I'm not about much at the moment I'm afraid, normal service will resume when life is less full. Warnings for wind and rain. Please heed them.

Its likely that travel will be disrupted in the south. Trees will come down. Camping would be errr, problematic! If you are an outdoor event organiser, I'd strongly reconsider options.

In terms of longer term weather, it does look continued to be unsettled I'm afraid.
