Resurrecting this thread for a aurora red alert!
It could be a stunning night for those not sleep deprived from last nights thunderstorms.

Apologies for the not so stealth boast but I'm currently in Iceland (the country not the supermarket) and they're expected to be spectacular later so we're going to go have a look later on.

I've been out and it's raining here. The cloud is pulling in too unfortunately. The chart looks promising though.

We went a couple of years ago and saw them every night we were there. It was amazing.

Clear here, but there's a large belt of tall trees blocking my view of the northern horizon. I might saunter out and have a look anyway.

Honestly couldn't see anything with the naked eye, so doesn't feel like a proper aurora.
Nearly 20 years since I saw the aurora dancing all over the sky due to an X30 class flare

I missed last night, was in my bed. But it looks like it will be an active aurora season 😍

It does Peri and for once, the long winter nights will carry a bit of a bonus hopefully.

I'm going to be on holiday in a few weeks in the SW, right by the sea where there'll be no streetlighting. This will of course guarantee that there's no lightshow while I'm there!

Aurora alert kp 6 for tonight and clear skies forecast. I’m at a concert in Liverpool so will head to the beach area of the Wirral afterwards and try my luck. I know how
to set my phone to a 10 second exposure!

I wish but unlikely as it's cloudy and been snowing on and off.

Not likely in Essex I guess, we're too far south? Clear skies here.

Good chance of seeing the Northern Lights tonight. I'm also in Yorkshire on holiday this week and able to be away from light pollution so really hoping to see something tonight!

Is there a best time or direction to look? I’ve never traveled very far north so would love to see them.

https://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/ you need to keep an eye on the magnetometer on this link. It can change quickly, but the time to see them is when it is red and the sky is clear and dark. The higher the red, the further south you'll see them. I think if we see the peaks seen a bit earlier today, then they will be visible from the south coast even.

Even if you can't see them by eye, try on your phone camera, they can often pick up what our eyes can't see.

DH and I went out about 11pm by which time everything had calmed down! But I got some pictures and this was about the best one. Could be something or nothing....
