if you have clear dark skies looking to the north, go outside now! Even reportedlyvisible from some parts of southern England.

Not a chance of seeing anything here - it’s raining Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/09/2023 20:15

Resurrecting this thread for a aurora red alert!
It could be a stunning night for those not sleep deprived from last nights thunderstorms.

Apologies for the not so stealth boast but I'm currently in Iceland (the country not the supermarket) and they're expected to be spectacular later so we're going to go have a look later on.

justasking111 · 18/09/2023 20:56

Fingers crossed 🤞

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 18/09/2023 21:09

Been looking for a thread on this to see if anyone has been lucky so far.

I've been out and it's raining here. The cloud is pulling in too unfortunately. The chart looks promising though.

@BarbaraofSeville Good luck tonight!
We went a couple of years ago and saw them every night we were there. It was amazing.

toomuchlaundry · 18/09/2023 21:11

Cloudy here

OhNoNotThatAgain · 18/09/2023 21:16

Clear here, but there's a large belt of tall trees blocking my view of the northern horizon. I might saunter out and have a look anyway.

WotNoUserName · 18/09/2023 22:31

Gah, stupid light pollution from stupid airport.

@BarbaraofSeville I'm so jealous, I've always wanted to go to Iceland! I hope you get a fantastic show of lights. Please post some pics if you do.

Perihelion · 24/09/2023 21:56

Photo taken from my bedroom window in Edinburgh the other night.
Honestly couldn't see anything with the naked eye, so doesn't feel like a proper aurora.
Nearly 20 years since I saw the aurora dancing all over the sky due to an X30 class flare

That's a lovely photo Peri

It looks like last night was a good night to watch. I missed it!

I missed last night, was in my bed. But it looks like it will be an active aurora season 😍

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/09/2023 08:59

It does Peri and for once, the long winter nights will carry a bit of a bonus hopefully.

I’ve heard we might see the lights tonight, anyone know when is the best time to look?

Bimblesalong · 11/11/2023 07:12

Aurora alert kp 6 for tonight and clear skies forecast. I’m at a concert in Liverpool so will head to the beach area of the Wirral afterwards and try my luck. I know how
to set my phone to a 10 second exposure!

EwwSprouts · 30/11/2023 17:01

I wish but unlikely as it's cloudy and been snowing on and off.

EmmaEmerald · 30/11/2023 19:09

Not likely in Essex I guess, we're too far south? Clear skies here.

justasking111 · 03/03/2024 20:05

Busy evening

GloriaSmud · 24/03/2024 15:38

Good chance of seeing the Northern Lights tonight. I'm also in Yorkshire on holiday this week and able to be away from light pollution so really hoping to see something tonight!

CowCatsRule · 24/03/2024 18:01

Is there a best time or direction to look? I’ve never traveled very far north so would love to see them.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/03/2024 18:18

https://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/ you need to keep an eye on the magnetometer on this link. It can change quickly, but the time to see them is when it is red and the sky is clear and dark. The higher the red, the further south you'll see them. I think if we see the peaks seen a bit earlier today, then they will be visible from the south coast even.

Even if you can't see them by eye, try on your phone camera, they can often pick up what our eyes can't see.

DH and I went out about 11pm by which time everything had calmed down! But I got some pictures and this was about the best one. Could be something or nothing....
