Winter Weather outlook

Disclaimer: I'm only a weather enthusiast, not a professional meterologist. Take anything I say with a good pinch of salt, I do get things wrong sometimes!

In a normal year I wouldn't dream of starting a winter weather outlook thread at the beginning of September. This year there is a great deal of anxiety and interest about what the weather may hold for us.

Outlooks at this point can only ever be rough hand waving exercises, taking into consideration lots of factors and are likely to be inaccurate. I've been doing a lot of thinking and research over the last couple of weeks as to what might happen this winter. At this point the honest answer is: I haven't a scooby! (this might make this thread a bit pointless at this time!)

Looking at various long term models, solutions range from wet, mild and stormy, to cold and blocked or cold and snowy! I have an instinct that we are more likely to end up with a milder, dry scenario, with some colder incursions at times, but that is instinct and not based on anything quantifiable.

For someone who can talk through the various factors at depth, watch Gavin's winter outlook videos on Youtube.

@EmmaAgain22 Would the hospital be able to change it because of the weather. Would they do that?

If it gets to the day, I imagine they will...it's with the geriatric team so hopefully they will understand.

JenniferBooth · 11/12/2022 20:46

Im sure they will as its the geriatric dept. I HATE snow. Fucking PITA

Newwardrobe · 11/12/2022 20:51

My dd has just driven from Canvey Island to Chelmsford and said the roads are treacherous.

Newwardrobe · 11/12/2022 20:57

I've just looked out the window! I didn't realise we had snow !

Ditto.

what sort of time did snow start in Essex?

we've got more now but it's sideways so it's hard to tell.

Hoping for a mild Christmas here . I just don't like extreme weather! Heat wind and sub zero temperature can all do one 😠

anythinginapinch · 11/12/2022 22:16

Spare a thought for all those battling the elements on top of such disasters ☹️

colouringindoors · 11/12/2022 23:25

Snowing in the Chilterns!

colouringindoors · 12/12/2022 00:15

Looks bad in Kent tonight!

Stuckinsnowinkent · 12/12/2022 00:33

I can confirm.that Medway in kent was gridlocked because of snow. Not seen that kind of snow in years.

justasking111 · 12/12/2022 00:41

Just looking at webcams on motorway sorry for anyone stuck on the road tonight

Furries · 12/12/2022 02:33

North East Essex - not even a flake of snow where I am. We seem to have the weirdest micro-climate here, not that I’m complaining right now as am happy with no snow.

Good luck to those who need to navigate it tomorrow.

Motorina · 12/12/2022 04:31

I’m due to drive to Cheltenham tomorrow for my first day at a new job. Currently in. Premier inn in Huntingdon to break the journey. Snow on the ground here.

Can anyone let me know what it’s like en route please? My journey is A14, A5 then A46.

If it was anything else I wouldn’t go. But new job, first day…

Motorina · 12/12/2022 04:38

Tomorrow is today! Monday. Sorry - woke in the night worrying about the drive.

GloriaSmud · 12/12/2022 07:13

Motorina - Trafficengland (map is taking a while to load but if you go on 'map layers' and tick 'traffic cameras'), might be able to help with your journey. I know the Cotswolds had quite a good dumping of snow yesterday morning but hopefully roads should be clear now.
Good Luck with your new job - hope it goes well.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/12/2022 07:31

Morning all,

Nothing really showing for today, just small snow showers here and there.

Tuesday looks to see more back in northern Scotland. There's still a massive question mark as to what will happen Tuesday night into Wednesday for southern England. Scenario 1: nothing. Scenario 2: SW affected again. Scenario 3: snow across southern coastal counties. I think we are best off looking at any Met Office warnings that pop up to indicate the likely result.

For the rest of this week from Wednesday, we look to be back mostly to snow showers down the eastern side again.

It was very! Nowhere had been gritted except the run up to work as the farm lads had been out in the tractor thank goodness. I have to do a right hand corner going up a hill in our village and I did it sideways Saturday morning! We're on a bus route too-chaos.
