Winter Weather outlook

Disclaimer: I'm only a weather enthusiast, not a professional meterologist. Take anything I say with a good pinch of salt, I do get things wrong sometimes!

In a normal year I wouldn't dream of starting a winter weather outlook thread at the beginning of September. This year there is a great deal of anxiety and interest about what the weather may hold for us.

Outlooks at this point can only ever be rough hand waving exercises, taking into consideration lots of factors and are likely to be inaccurate. I've been doing a lot of thinking and research over the last couple of weeks as to what might happen this winter. At this point the honest answer is: I haven't a scooby! (this might make this thread a bit pointless at this time!)

Looking at various long term models, solutions range from wet, mild and stormy, to cold and blocked or cold and snowy! I have an instinct that we are more likely to end up with a milder, dry scenario, with some colder incursions at times, but that is instinct and not based on anything quantifiable.

For someone who can talk through the various factors at depth, watch Gavin's winter outlook videos on Youtube.

I always carry a pair of the cosy/fleecy socks in my bag on icy days, the kind you get in the pound shop. If things get too slippy just put them on over your shoes and they stick to the floor. They probably will be ruined on that trip but they do the job in an emergency. Saw a woman years ago get stuck in a dip on a very icy pavement, she just couldn't get traction and make it up on either side, needed a couple of strangers to grab an arm each and slide her out 😀

Yikes
how deep was the dip?

happily I am not working atm so I won't go out unless I have to. I am out with sis on Friday night but she's agreed to come here and then we're taking a cab - the place is only 20 mins walk away but even she agreed to a cab in this weather.

Dd just sent a picture from Edinburgh and there is a decent snowcover on the street outside her student halls.

MistletoeMouse · 08/12/2022 10:21

This is a genius idea!

BobBobBobbing · 08/12/2022 11:21

A few snowflakes drifting down at the moment. I'm in the NE a few miles from the coast.

WhistlingInWhistler · 08/12/2022 11:42

We've got a dusting of snow. There's been a bit on the hilltops for a couple of days (Perthshire).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/12/2022 12:48

Away from northern Scotland, the primary risk area for snow showers looks to be in Yorkshire and perhaps Lincolnshire for the rest of the day.

That’s the one😳

Oo. We have a light dusting of snow here in County Durham. On a non freezing day it wouldn't have settled but as the ground is ice it's making everything all bright and beautiful.

justasking111 · 08/12/2022 18:22

Freezing fog out side now very eerie. Our weather station is reading 1c outside. Guess it'll be a wee bit colder during the night

RedDiamond · 08/12/2022 18:26

Due to the really cold weather I have just ordered my DS an extra long hoodie blanket thing and a weighted blanket. He rents his own flat but is very reluctant to put the heating on. I hope these items will keep him warmer. His Dad & I have offered to help with his heating bills but this is one stubborn young man.

Going to phone my son tonight flat outside Leeds and offer to help out if needed

RedDiamond · 08/12/2022 18:30

@justasking111 It's funny, he won't take money but is looking forward to the other items!

Mostly sleet here interspersed with a few flakes (also NE coat of England - near Whitley Bay)

BiddyPop · 08/12/2022 21:50

Now sleety snowing in Dublin. Poor dog doesn't know what to make of it!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/12/2022 21:58

Parts of Norfolk could be affected again overnight.

Quite beautiful @CoffeeBeansGalore

Furries · 09/12/2022 00:37

North Essex coast here. Popped out at 6pm for a quick errand and stupidly used my screen wash which promptly froze on the windscreen!

Furries · 09/12/2022 00:38

@CoffeeBeansGalore - that looks lovely. I love looking at snowy scenes, but hate dealing with them after about 6 hours.

DuchessDandelion · 09/12/2022 00:51

@CoffeeBeansGalore is that the view from your home? If so you're very lucky!
