We need to talk about the Weather and the potential for extreme heat - PART 2

Old thread: www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat

The old thread was started when models started to introduce model runs with temperatures of 40c several days in advance of when the record breaking heat wave arrived. We chatted about the idea that this has never been seen before in the UK and linked it back to climate change. Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts were horrified when these models actually verified and across the UK record breaking temperatures were seen. We spoke about the risks to infrastructure and health.

Weve also talked about the near drought conditions in parts of southern
England and East Anglia.

We discussed comparisons to 1976 and showed that although 1976 was hot for a prolonged period of time and was extremely dry, reaching back into 1975, that the UK was anomalously warm compared to elsewhere. In contrast, the July 22 heat wave happened amongst a background of extreme heat across Europe and elsewhere. In 1976 the highest recorded temperature was 35.9c, this year it was 40.3c

This thread is a continuation of that discussion.

Disclaimer: I'm a weather enthusiast, not a professional meteorologist. As such, please refer to the Met Office for reliable forecasts.

Looking forward, GFS, supported by several members of the GEFS ensembles show the potential for another heatwave from around the 9th August in the south and Midlands. Nothing as extreme as the July heatwave, but instead introduces several days of above 30c heat with some showing temperatures into the mid or high 30s. At the moment, there isn't sufficient model consensus to say that this is a likely outcome. I'm flagging this as a potential scenario, but not yet an actual forecast.

Photos are a couple of stats from the met office with regards to the dry situation in July.

I live in Manchester but I'm from the Greater Glasgow area. I know people have been saying it rained a lot in Manchester last week. But it was really only a couple of days and it feels like year to date its been very dry.

Walking to work there are lots of leaves from the trees on the ground and the blackberries are ripe

We had heavy rain in Manc land this morning. Run offs everywhere and standing water on the motorway. Dried up now though and humid with a warm wind.

Oh to be in Manc land
Now that rain is there
And whoever wakes in Manc land
Sees some morning, unaware
That the rose still blooms and keeps her leaf
That new buds are fresh and green
While the rain falls hard on the blessed place
Manc land - now!

(With apologies to Robert Browning)

My neighbour had his sprinkler on for hours earlier . Unbelievable .

InMySpareTime · 03/08/2022 22:07

The Mersey was running at a reasonable level today, I've seen it much lower at this time of year. We must be getting a decent amount of rainfall overall.

colouringindoors · 03/08/2022 22:09

Thank you x

Have had loads of rehydration stuff, some food. Feel a little better but still boiling hot and massive headache. Need to be a bit smarter working outside in this weather...

I usually hate autumn coming (dark plus lots of bad anniversaries) but this year I think it will be a relief!

megletthesecond · 03/08/2022 23:30

Everything is getting dry and smelly in built up areas.

I have started putting a small toy storage tub in the shower with me. It fills up during a short shower and is enough to water a big plant. I just have to make sure I don't drop it going downstairs.

EmmaH2022 · 03/08/2022 23:34

meglet by "everything" do you mean plants etc?

colouringindoors · 04/08/2022 11:54

At an emergency meeting, the National Drought Group moved England into "prolonged dry weather" status - the stage before a drought.

The weather forecast for the Midlands yesterday showed rain right overhead our area but all we had was about 3 spots of drizzle for 2 minutes! Dry and sunny again today with no rain in the forecast.

I'm a bit more north than you - Cheshire/Staffs border - and we had literally 5 spots of rain in a dry empty litter tray 😸 lovely fresh breeze though.

@OhYouBadBadKitten How warm do you think it will get next wk? I've looked at the Meteociel link you gave us, and it varies from 20.4 to 32.6 🤯 (that's the 2m one with my grid ref, where I remembered to put a minus in front of the first number this time🤦‍♀️) for Thursday.

I'd rather be reading the snow forecast, tbh ⛄

stillherenow · 04/08/2022 18:32

Our local weather guy here has just posted on Facebook saying Weds/Thurs almost as hot as the last heatwave (35/36 here)
Arg

stillherenow · 04/08/2022 18:33

As in Thurs is predicted to get to 36.

EmmaH2022 · 04/08/2022 18:37

still are you in London?

I am already wondering what w/c 15 August will be like. Scary.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/08/2022 18:43

It's hard to know yet how high temperatures will peak. At the moment the most likely scenario is for temperatures to be low 30s in the south, perhaps mid 30s. I don't know how far north that will push. There's what I'd consider a low possibility of something a little higher, but not in the high 30s.

The difficulties I see this time are a)the potential for prolonged heat and b) renewed issues around fire risk again.

Theres the added issue that the fabric of buildings now is warmed up, so we've less buffer for keeping buildings cooler. My house is still at 26c no matter how much I try and shoo the warm air out.

Kitten "My house is still at 26c no matter how much I try and shoo the warm air out."

oh that's interesting, I thought here it was due to being a one way facing flat.

some flats built on the corner of this building have managed to get their temps down because of the dual aspect windows.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 04/08/2022 18:48

I know that heatwaves and v high temps are not good news for the world/humanity, but I love the heat.
If only it wasn't the harbinger of doom, I'd quite like it to be hot always.

PlanetNormal · 04/08/2022 18:54

I’m in Leicestershire and I’m loving this summer. There were a couple of ridiculously hot days, but that’s a small price to pay for such a long spell of utterly glorious weather. I can’t remember another year when we enjoyed eating so many of our meals in the garden and I can’t remember the last time I drove my car with the roof up. ☀️

stillherenow · 04/08/2022 19:58

It is at least no longer humid. It feels much better .

stillherenow · 04/08/2022 19:59

I think I am struggling because I'm menopausal, I would have loved this 20 years ago, now I can't wait for winter !

darlingdodo · 04/08/2022 20:06

Scottish Borders had really heavy rain overnight Monday - the rivers rose really fast, but they fall again quickly because of loss of trees.

Me too. It's rubbish.

I'm in Surrey . Feels like a desert!

Margot Leadbeater can wear a big hat and flowing robes in the Surrey Desert.

blimey, if that's Surrey, London might be worse.
