General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

Maximum temperatures today, including the record for Wales. It's very notable how widespread and how far north these very high temperatures spread.

Met office RED WARNING for extreme heat.

The 31 in Scotland is really striking.

BlackeyedSusan · 18/07/2022 17:57

I've caved in and had to go to pages as it keeps crashing and has been awful today.

We decamped to ex's house but it is not as cool as it might have been as he had windows open.

I am also enduring a "I'm bored" and "I want to go out"

stillherenow · 18/07/2022 18:09

Several main roads around here have been closed due to melting tarmac. We're at 35!degrees so they weren't wrong when they said 40 would cause major disruption!

stillherenow · 18/07/2022 18:10

I'm in Surrey

Caramac555 · 18/07/2022 18:20

So apparently the Cambridge botanical site doesn't upload data until tomorrow at 9am. I'm still holding out for a late entry winner🙂

wonderstuff · 18/07/2022 18:24

Over 29 degrees inside my house in north Hampshire, with windows open and curtains closed. Ds has just gone to our village pool, hope he gets in, don’t like driving him as it’s only a mile but now worrying that it might be full and he’ll have to walk back in the heat.
School was actually bearable, we closed at 1:40 and it was still reasonably cool indoors at that point. Dreading tomorrow though because I don’t think it will have cooled down over night.

wonderstuff · 18/07/2022 18:26

I find all this terrifying really, is this the future, is Southern Europe going to be as hot as an oven in the future?

BlackeyedSusan · 18/07/2022 18:38

I left the max min thermometer out at home so I can see what it got up to. It was 28 when I left and I was grumpy and a bit dizzy as I slept all morning and did not drink. Had drinks and salty snack and felt better.

Just been out to the shop: it's 36 degrees outside but it is all buildings and tarmac terraced inner city streets with one small tree and feels baking hot. Bloody hot on the one minute walk.

Definitely need more trees planted in cities where it won't trap pollution.

velvetvixen · 18/07/2022 18:40

That UK map really shows the heatwave has spread far!

Plasmodesmata · 18/07/2022 18:57

Was about 34 here today. Forecast 38 tomorrow. Just had email from school saying they were all too hot today so have given up and are going online instead tomorrow. (Secondary)

Plasmodesmata · 18/07/2022 18:58

Oh sorry location might be useful. Yorkshire. Not used to it at all.

Bunnyfuller · 18/07/2022 19:56

We are East Northants, and sat outside thermometer says 35. At nearly fucking 8pm.

nope, that’s not ‘normal summer’ in the UK.

mcallister · 18/07/2022 21:06

It's 9pm and 32 degrees in my suburban London garden. DH and I are sitting in the garden with a glass of wine. It feels like being on holiday.....
I may feel differently tomorrow when I'm sweating on the tube but for the moment I'm enjoying it. There are so many evenings when it's too cold to enjoy being outside.

GloriaSmud · 18/07/2022 21:31

Highest reading for my weather station here (western edge of Leicester) today was 39.5C. It's now 30.7C.
It's going to be a rough night.

velvetvixen · 18/07/2022 21:41

Tomorrow night looks to be more of the same. I'd cry, but it would only make me hotter!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2022 21:56

I'm reduced to lying down, typing with one finger after melting into a puddle tonight, so no real updates other than : bloody hot tonight, followed by flaming hot tomorrow. Easing off from the west and peak temperatures for many will depend on how quickly the cold front advances.

Let's all collectively use our womanly wiles to lure the cold front in 😉

colouringindoors · 18/07/2022 22:04

Still 28 here. I'm still boiling. (bloody hormones don't help). Roll on wednesday morning.

Yes but if it came in too fast we'd have all the 1976ers gloating at us. So, I'm sorry, I'll have to sacrifice you all for the sake of my pride. Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2022 22:09

Do I need to start a Part 2 thread tonight in case I miraculously sleep in a bit tomorrow?

OP posts:
velvetvixen · 18/07/2022 22:16

Yes! new thread please! even though we're being sacrificed on the altar of 1976.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2022 22:27

New thread Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2022 22:41

Cooling cloth good idea. I'm going to wrap a freezer block up in cloth for my feet.
