24 degrees downstairs here. A Lot warmer in my bedroom. Sofa it is...

stuntbubbles · 19/07/2022 05:33

Despite outside temps getting down to 23 – the breeze through the open windows felt chilly! So delightful! – downstairs thermostat has only crept up overnight, gradually from 24 in the afternoon to 26.5. Dreading WFH today. (Going in wouldn’t improve matters, it’s a tube journey and an office without air con.)

Motorina · 19/07/2022 06:18

Comparing today's forecast with yesterday's, what strikes me isn't that it's hotter. It is, but only by a degree or so. But that it hits 35 much much earlier, stays at peak temp much longer, and cools down much later. Yesterday was bad, and we only had a couple of hours at peak hot. Today is going to be beyond imagining.

Minimalme · 19/07/2022 06:59

Yo! Just wanted to thank you OP again for this thread.

I got tooled up for the heat on Friday and it made yesterday just about bearable.

I have three pugs and bought cold neckerchiefs for them which worked brilliantly.

I bought cool mats which the dogs refused to sit on but the kids have loved. They stuck them in the freezer and slept on them last night.

We bought four bags of ice which we've used in every drink and put in the dog bowls.

Other than that it's been windows shut, curtains closed and fans on.

I kept my three off school. youngest's primary sent a cross sounding email midday, saying no absence due to heat was authorised. Then another at 3pm saying LA guidance advised that it is ok. Not that I cared because I like to make my own decisions!

Only one school closed in Lancashire. It’s a bit hard to decipher but it looks like Covid absence among staff may be a factor. Perhaps they don’t have enough staff to spread the pupils out enough?

SpamhappyTootsie · 19/07/2022 07:08

I would be keeping my dc off if they were school age. But I had the luxury of doing so and this isn’t a criticism of anyone sending their dc in.
We are supposed to be having a whole school event in the hall all afternoon. It’s a squeeze to get them all in. Personally, I think that is absolute madness to go ahead and I’ve brushed up on my heatstroke First Aid last night.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/07/2022 07:32

Good Morrow fine people!

Or something like that. I see that active thunderstorms have moved into the far SW. This marks the boundary of change between the extreme heat and fresher, moister air. It will be fascinating to watch the transition.

It will be slow to move in though, only reaching, for example a stripe stretching from Bangor to the Isle of Wight by 4pmish and the London area around 8pm, Cambridge area by very approximately 10pm. Don't hold too fast to those timings.

There may be cloud moving in in advance of the front which would inhibit top temperatures, but in general, the forecasts from yesterday still stand.

Top temperature spots:Approx around Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire areas would be my guess.

Duplicating forecast posts across the different threads, for those kind enough to stay and fill this one and for those setting forth in the new thread that was set up early.

My DD is currently on a sailing boat off N Wales waiting for some wind to take them down the coast, which apparently will arrive tomorrow. She’s a bit bored with the waiting but on the sea is probably the best place to be right now.

Just as a little note, I have realised ds14 who is autistic doesn't seem to recognise heat Confused

He is a T1 Diabetic and I have stored his insulins in the fridge and put a recently cooled mat under him and set him up with a fan.

He is lounging in bed in what must be the hottest room in the house in thick pj bottoms with a duvet over him. WTAF?!

My 12 year old is also autistic and I am having similar issues. He is currently in his school trousers (it's the holidays here), a vest, a long sleeved shirt and a hoodie. Last night I went in and unravelled him from his duvet as he was also wearing a fleecy onsie and was absolutely covered in sweat.

In winter I struggle to get him into anything warm. He wears shorts and a vest outside if I fail to grab him in time.

Minimalme · 19/07/2022 09:15

Horrible to be a pug right now...he has a cooling neckerchief, fan on full and bowl
of ice to lick but is still puggin' hot!

Met office RED WARNING for extreme heat.

@RuggedD it's bloody frustrating isn't it? DS12 (also ASD) went out to play in the snow once in crocs, shorts and no socks.

And then work a winter coat zipped up, hood up with welly boots all summer.

Drives me mad!

RuggedD · 19/07/2022 09:29

It sure is. The number of times I have had calls from the school because he refuses to wear his school jumper (although that is a sensory thing as well) or coat in winter. (Or hat or gloves...)

I am still in the 'explaining why' he has to be dressed appropriately stage. Every Single Day. It really can be frustrating. (I haven't a hope of getting him out school trousers though the entire holidays. It/s the only texture he seems to be able to tolerate on his legs.)

Tiggertum · 19/07/2022 09:59

I have exactly this with my eldest who has adhd. Also doesn’t really recognise pain or hunger ( now made worse with meds). Wraps himself up at night as well

Luckily has taken on board need to drink lots at least ( he has anxiety and sometimes really takes a rule on board - this is one of the rules he’s fully embraced)

whenwillthemadnessend · 19/07/2022 10:14

Slept fine tho we live in a big Victorian house and it's cooler than my old newer house.

Colder in winter tho so can't have everything

Not looking forward to today. Paddling pool is now warm and the garden gets full sun until about 3 ish buy that time it's like an outdoor sauna.

Really hoping for some mega thunder and lightening tonight.

whenwillthemadnessend · 19/07/2022 10:17

My pond was drying up so filled it a little as we have newts and frogs in there and I dont want them to perish.

The bees loved resting on the paddling pool for a drink so I'm not going to feel bad plus I will reuse the water whenever empty it on the plants

11am and 34 here in Yorkshire already. It was a pleasant 22 at 5.30 am so I opened the house up, cleaned the bird equipment, and pegged the washing out then shut the house up and went back to bed at 7.
Hubby wants a hair cut so I'm getting the trimmer out now lol.

howaboutchocolate · 19/07/2022 11:53

It's 37C already here in Cambs which I think is supposed to be the hottest place today.
I'm looking forward to these thunderstorms.

stillherenow · 19/07/2022 12:15

Blimey 37 now. Think I've only seen that in the UK once before 2 years ago - so any hotter and it's a record for me!
