General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

I'm east of Cambridge with an external thermometre mounted in full shade, which has historically mapped well against official observations. It's 31, up two degrees in about 45 minutes. It's feeling hot and two of the dogs are struggling. (The third is lying in the sun. Clearly she's an idiot.)

stuntbubbles · 18/07/2022 11:54

My phone tells me it’s 33 outside but I’ve made the house so dark and cool it’s hard to believe it, tempted to poke a leg out covered in olive oil to test whether it’s all a hoax.

Motorina · 18/07/2022 11:56

And just hit 32. There's a slight breezer, but it's a warm breeze, so doesn't much help.

RedWingBoots · 18/07/2022 12:02

It jumped 2 degrees from 33 to 35 within a minute.

For your info at 1150 BST Cambridge airport was reporting the temperature as 33 Celsius.

Motorina · 18/07/2022 12:15

@notimagain so I'm tracking two degrees behind? Probably about right given I'm that much further east.

Either way, it's hot!

PeloAddict · 18/07/2022 12:18

My flat is 22c and lovely. I stepped outside and instantly went back in Grin

BlackeyedSusan · 18/07/2022 12:23

I have only just woken up again after getting up early to close up the flat.

I was sleeping with dd's phone next to me after it charged so I could turn off the alarm from bed and get up to close curtains when dad's alarm went off across the room.

She has been and retrieved it without me noticing!. Mind you, I walked across ds's bed to shut windows while he slept.

The rain smell last night was amazing, wasn't it? So earthy. Apparently it's called Petrichor and made up of ozone, geosmin and soil bacteria.

I love that smell. It is a summer smell to me as it is (or should I say was) a daily occurence here.

Would be as hot as blazes in the day and then around 3pm or 4pm we have a massive shower, cools everything down and 20 minutes later everything is dry again. Now it just seem to be getting wetter in our parts for longer.

Although I wouldn't mind being in a heatwave right now. Its currently 17 degrees outside and freezing inside my office (being in the southern hemisphere we haven't mastered keeping heat in) and am sporting 3 layers a jacket and a scarf , yikes.

Keep cool everyone and I will say it again (I know I am like a broken record), please keep your doggies feet away from the tarmac for these few days.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2022 12:52

Some top temperatures.

@OhYouBadBadKitten is it correct that the hottest temps tomorrow are likely to be more northern? I have seen lots on Twitter suggesting The Midlands and Yorkshire are to be hottest

thekingfisher · 18/07/2022 13:49

I'm in Suffolk and I can agree with those temps. It's roasting. We are all coping although ddog not sure what to do with herself and dh is baking in outside office. I am working in the dark all windows now closed and curtains drAwn since about 9.30 ...

LadyFlumpalot · 18/07/2022 14:01

Temperature is shooting up here. It actually dropped from 30 to 28 at around midday, but it's up to 33 now. Need that cloud cover back!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2022 14:30

Provisionally the hottest day on record now in Wales.

Pondering whether to take umbrellas for school pick up, they are pink not black

Not sure if they’d be beneficial - it’s only 10 mins walk but has taken ages for a four year old, plus friend

MeridianGrey · 18/07/2022 14:40

We’ve shut our house up today with all windows closed and blinds/curtains shut. First time we’ve ever done this and it has definitely helped. I wonder time the advice switches and you then have to open everything up to get a breeze through?

FlibbertyGiblets · 18/07/2022 14:42

Marsha yes take umberellas, I would.

Jeepers, Kitten, that is scary hot. Poor Wales. Poor everyone, really...

I wouldn't like to predict where the hottest temperatures will be, but certainly the strip from Lincolnshire through to Yorkshire does look like it could be a contender.

I recently walked home from work under my umbrella and I really don't care what anyone thought of me. It kept my face, upper arms and higher chest shaded.

Bunny2006 · 18/07/2022 14:57

I'm in Yorkshire and trains are not running today/tomorrow due to the heat. I've spent half my days wage on taxi fare to get in! There's no air con here but it's ok indoors, outside is roasting and I'm getting covered in tiny bugs

PeloAddict · 18/07/2022 15:00

Very much enjoying being inside!

According to my weather station, we hit 39C here (Leicester) about 10 minutes ago but it's hovering around 38C now.

OYBBK - at the rate this thread is filling up, we'll need a 'Heatwave Red Warning Part 2' thread in a few hours.

Yes, rule of thumb once the temperature outside is lower open up. In practice I’ll open windows and blinds once the sun is off them. You can also open loft hatch as heat rises.

toomanychickens · 18/07/2022 15:14

Surrey here - any my weather station ( fancy new one for my birthday) has peaked at 35.6 at 1425. Tracking it online at work!

peridito · 18/07/2022 15:17

I find it really helpful when people giving descriptions of their conditions give some idea of whereabouts in the country they are and whether urban or not .
