General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

Semi rural village in Surrey

stuntbubbles · 18/07/2022 15:21

Allegedly 36 outside here – concrete jungle patch of south London, nothing naice and leafy about it at all. 26 inside – downstairs. Upstairs is pure Satan’s waft. I haven’t been out to test it but DP just brought DD home from nursery and says it’s like opening an oven door in your face. Just kissed DD and it felt like snuggling a baked potato.

Motorina · 18/07/2022 15:25

Now 36 here. East of Cambridge, very rural, thermometre mounted on north facing wall in full shade.

toomanychickens · 18/07/2022 15:25

Oh the heat got to me it was actually 1445 not 1425. Cloudy here now

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2022 15:32

Cloud is suppressing temperatures for many - that cloud will likely clear through.
In the mean time, we are 1.2c away from the national record.

37 here in North London. Inside temperature still 26 with all windows and blinds closed.

I let ddog out thinking she might do a quick wee and then come back inside. She lay down and started sunbathing 😮
I lured her back in with treats.

According to my weather station, we hit 39C here (Leicester) about 10 minutes ago but it's hovering around 38C now.

OYBBK - at the rate this thread is filling up, we'll need a 'Heatwave Red Warning Part 2' thread in a few hours.

It will be a relief when we get to the Part 2 thread, this one is getting rather unwieldy. Really should change my setting to 'pages'.

GloriaSmud · 18/07/2022 15:49

I hadn't realised you could do the 'pages' thing and I've just done it - it's so much better!

According to SkyNews, flights from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire have been stopped because the runway has been affected by the heat.

Perihelion · 18/07/2022 15:52

28.6C in my garden in Edinburgh. There is a tiny bit of a breeze as I'm close to the Forth.

antelopevalley · 18/07/2022 16:01

The breeze here is hot. Small village in Scotland. Not as hot as some other places, but to hot to want to work.

PeloAddict · 18/07/2022 16:02

Now totally grey in preston and friend reported some rain up near Lancaster

Zimbolino · 18/07/2022 16:05

We just got 2 minutes of rain in Oxford! So very random, and I brought in the bits of washing I didn't want to dry again. (Excuse to go out in the rain)

SummerLobelia · 18/07/2022 16:14

We are apparently 32 degrees in St George.

(I am not in St George. But my computer location thingy had a mega glitch about a year ago when we went to the channel Islands and never got back to where we actually are. It's always a toss up if we are in St george, Bristol or Droylsden.) In reality I have no idea where any of these places are but I am happy to not let Microsoft know that!)

Apparently Luton has also closed it's runway due to melting tarmac.

Santon Downham in Suffolk has reached 38.1c at 4pm. Its going to be close as to whether we beat the UK record today.

OP posts:
colouringindoors · 18/07/2022 16:21

Do you think that will shut up any of the "1976 brigade" ?!

colouringindoors · 18/07/2022 16:23

MeridianGrey · 18/07/2022 14:40

We’ve shut our house up today with all windows closed and blinds/curtains shut. First time we’ve ever done this and it has definitely helped. I wonder time the advice switches and you then have to open everything up to get a breeze through?

when the outdoor temp is lower than indoor. For me this hasn't been til 8 or 9pm

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2022 16:24

That Welsh record didn't stand long. That's frankly quite an incredible temperature for Wales.

Nope. Even if we had 30 days of record breaking temperatures they'd invent some stats or doctor some maps to prove it wrong.

OP posts:
colouringindoors · 18/07/2022 16:30

Temp here (Chilterns) peaked about 4pm. Starting to creep down a tiny bit

Piggywaspushed · 18/07/2022 16:52

A woman I work with predicted Santon Downham last week!

mcallister · 18/07/2022 17:12

It was 38 degrees in Victoria station in London about 10 minutes ago. Now at least 10 degrees hotter on the train home. Someone has just poured a bottle of water over himself!

KateLink · 18/07/2022 17:19

Please, please keep dogs (pets) inside and cool these next few days. Anything over 18 degrees C can cause heat stroke in dogs, and pavements get really hot! Make sure they are walked super early (or even give it a miss for a couple of days and do some brain training instead) and have lots and lots of water and cool places to retreat to. Keep our pets safe and well everyone! <3

Motorina · 18/07/2022 17:24

Mine have free access to the house and paddling pool. I keep dunking them in the pool but they’d rather sunbathe in full sun. They’re desperate for a walk but I keep telling them I’m hot even if they apparently aren’t. Dogs are idiots.

FYI Droylsden is in east Manchester, have passed through it many times!
