General discussion is www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4583720-we-need-to-talk-about-the-weather-and-the-potential-for-extreme-heat but I wanted this to be seen by as many people as possible.

Oh no ! I don’t know how I’m going to cope I’m 65 with high bp, work in a busy factory doing a manual job on a machine that gets very hot anyway. With no air con. Are there any rules, for working with such high temperatures?

No regulations specifically about maximum temperature, but there is an obligation for working environments to be safe.

StressfulBedtimes · 15/07/2022 11:18

Ah ok that makes sense re power, thanks all!

Our school is planning a beach trip on Tuesday, in the red zone! I was concerned any way but now I’m thinking they definitely should not go 😟

My friend is taking her young children to a theme park on Tuesday, forecast 39! I’ve tried to tell her to cancel/re-book but she’s still going. Absolute madness

We went when it was 30 no young dc just teens (who loved it)

There we’re some unhappy dc queuing

It will be pretty bad, tell her to get a fast track pass at least but even though there was a fake beach where we went there wasn’t much shade

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/07/2022 11:22

Stressful, I wouldn't let my child go on that trip. But I think schools will now formally be asked to change plans.

I wonder what people with glass south-facing rear extensions will do? They will act like massive greenhouses.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/07/2022 11:23

I'd be surprised if theme parks were to remain open. Their liability for any incident would be through the roof.

Wow, I am not looking forward to being at work in temperatures of high 30s in a classroom with 30 x children, blinds that don’t close and windows that barely open. Even the playground has no shade and there’s no field or trees as it was sold off for housing :(

ListenLinda · 15/07/2022 11:24

I’ve just been informed DDs school has air con in the classrooms. I’m still not sure I am 100% happy with sending her in yet.

It’s good, if people can, to put bowls of water out for wildlife in this heat. I put it out the front for the foxes and hedgehogs and birds. We have a pond in the garden but not everything can get into our garden, so out the front is good too.

A very good point! I came upon a flock of Ravons the other day, who were actually panting! I poured them out some water in the empty container from my picnic and they all had a good drink. Everyone thinks about feeding the birds in winter but seem to forget the importance of watering wildlife in summer!

Badger1970 · 15/07/2022 11:26

I'm at home recovering from pretty rough heat exhaustion after having stupidly manic days on Sunday and Monday, and have had 3 days feeling like death warmed up. I still can't eat properly due to the nausea and have got a pounding headache. Not looking forward to this............

Quite. If tran tracks buckle, wouldn't that be true of rollercoaster tracks too?

MarshaBradyo · 15/07/2022 11:28

True they might close theme parks anyway

StressfulBedtimes · 15/07/2022 11:28

@OhYouBadBadKitten I hope so! I’m going to speak to them today if I haven’t heard anything, especially as one DC is diabetic so this heat has the potential to make her very very unwell

SquirmOfEels · 15/07/2022 11:29

I was wondering at what temperatures they'll close the deep Underground lines

Thursday37 · 15/07/2022 11:29

I am so bloody glad we moved when we did! I’m in the red bit but we have an old thatched cottage which is cold inside in the heat, I’ve had normal pyjamas and duvet in the recent weather. Old house would be a furnace.

We’ll gloss ove the fact we will freeze this winter with ice on the single glazing and just focus on the fact we won’t melt next week instead 😂

ComDummings · 15/07/2022 11:29

At least it’s only 2 days, we will all get through as best we can and by Wednesday it’ll be OK.

Sweetpea84 · 15/07/2022 11:31

We’ve been given the option to collect kids from 1pm next week so very thankful.

LittleSwede · 15/07/2022 11:35

Thank you for the update OYYBK (I was lurking on the other thread, always fascinated by the weather), hopefully people will take notice and change their plans.

I have already decided DD aged & is staying at home on Mon and Tues (she is autistic and not a fan of the heat) she only attends on a part time timetable but I can't see how she would cope in this heat. Hopefully her school will shut now anyway.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 15/07/2022 11:38

Thanks @OhYouBadBadKitten

What do you think schools are likely to be asked to do? Will children be sent home?

JonSnowedUnder · 15/07/2022 11:39

It's supposed to be our primary school sports day, which is in a huge field with no trees for shade. No word but I can't imagine it will happen.

Allicando · 15/07/2022 11:40

Urgh working this weekend as a Community Nurse Practitioner so lots of 111 / 999 lower cat calls coming our way. I think it will either be really busy or very quiet!

Namechangenoidea · 15/07/2022 11:41

Im finding it really strange all the panic. The people that are worried the most, are you people who havent travelled to really hot countries before? I go Cyprus most years in August and its always that heat and its fine. When I was younger I used to get drunk in the day in that heat in Cyprus. People who are panicking honestly it will be fine dont worry.

Not use them?

concernedguineapig · 15/07/2022 11:42

I'm working nights Monday Tuesday Wednesday, don't know if that's good or bad. If anyone has any tips I'd be really glad of them.

Cotherstone · 15/07/2022 11:42

Our sports day has been cancelled and the children can pretty much wear anything cool.
