Storm Eunice

This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

@Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters

Can I join the Cornish crew for some handholding. Last time I looked we were bang in the middle of the red zone.

School closed tomorrow and DH just home from work at Treliske and said all routine appointments in his department for tomorrow cancelled but he still has to go in. Have told him not to go on Hamburger Hill as winds there are always bad. He's v nonchalant but I am getting a bit worried. Thought I was being organised but got last box of candles from Mole Valley earlier!

Feel like I am waiting for armageddon now ...

He might be safer on Hamburger Hill though - no real trees to speak of. I'd be more concerned finding an alternative route to Truro that might have more trees that could fall.
TheAbbotOfUnreason · 17/02/2022 20:41

Sussex here - some school buses cancelled and public buses are single decker only so lower years are WFH.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/02/2022 20:41

@Louisianagumbo

I'm in Lancashire and we've been downgraded from amber to yellow. Maybe nationally it's not going to be as bad as forecast?
There have been no changes to the met office amber warnings for tomorrow since this morning.

@Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters Yes, I feel the same. Anxiously waiting for it now. Perhaps see what it's like in the morning, and if it's really bad it may be clear that DH just can't go in. Or lots of roads may be closed and that'll take the decision away.

I think our dc go to the same school Grin
Indoctro · 17/02/2022 20:43

So I was in red zone for Arwen

I had stacked my garden furniture and put heavy plants pots on top again side of house and it was still smashed to bits

I also made the mistake at 3.30pm when we lost power to quickly drive 1.5 miles to a shop - 1 mile in I deeply regretted it. Debris flying everywhere, poor visibility and trees across the roads blocking me. I eventually got home but it was actually terrifying and I will never make that mistake again. So please learn from my error, do not go out the house unless it's a emergency.

The last storm 2 weeks ago we had was only yellow warning and a tree fell on two of my friends cars, the first man had a very lucky escape. The 2nd friend not so much and has a broken neck.

Things I learnt. Have hot water bottles ready as without power it got cold very quickly, we had a gas cooker though fed by bottles in garden so boiling water might not be possible but if you have camping stoves get them looked out. Get all your torches ready. As soon as you lose power fill up water in pans etc as water normally also goes off. Fill bath up for flushing the toilet.

Put all your electronics on to charge overnight, kids iPads etc so at least you have stuff charged. Charge everything and any power pacs if you have them.

Anyway that my little things I learnt in the last big storm

MinglingFlamingo · 17/02/2022 20:45

@Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters hand holding. But I agree with @MrsMigginsCat your DH would probably be safer sticking to the A30 and Hamburger Hill than trying to navigate narrow back lanes where there are more trees and harder to know where you are if stranded and need help.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 17/02/2022 20:47

@WreckTangled

School on the edge of the Downs, big rural catchment?

Indoctro · 17/02/2022 20:48

@Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters seriously don't let him drive

It's absolutely terrifying and so dangerous see my post below I made that mistake in Arwen

Also I'm in NE Scotland and we get some pretty bad weather but that red storm was horrific, the debris flying about and trees literally falling over all the roads , every route I tried to get home was getting blocked and I only drove just over a mile. Please don't let him drive in a red warning.

Yep. Dd is thrilled. Me not so much Grin

Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters · 17/02/2022 20:51

Thanks for support and you are probably right about Hamburger Hill - just hope there's no lorries next to him. He's so bloody laid back and even now is just sitting here eating chocolate digestives and watching Dragon's Den, eye rolling at my suggestions re filling up water bottles and tidying up outside. I mean, one of the things that attracted me to him in the first place is the fact that he's laid back but somehow this is taking it to another level Hmm

HesterShaw1 · 17/02/2022 20:51

My DP has to drive to Newquay tomorrow. He has to go - no choice (emergency services). Including Hamburger Hill. But there are no trees there. I know he has to go, so there's no point me fretting about it

Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters · 17/02/2022 20:52

@Indoctro - don't know if he'll go or not but the hospital haven't said for the staff not to go in?

MrsRussell · 17/02/2022 20:53

Also @Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters if my journey to work (back lanes round Truro, we pop out near Kea church to cut into town and avoid Treliske traffic) is anything to go by, there's masses of standing water on the roads and some really deep horrible puddles half across the road - almost like fords. Was shitty going into work on Monday.

Met Office has dropped a couple of mph from our forecast so I'm kind of resigned now.

This way/that way about whether to run Scouts tonight in the woods or no but we did, lots of talk abut how eerily calm it was and then I thought "hang on it's been howling round the house all day!" - it makes a very distinctive racket in the chimney and the cats hate it.
Interestingly, all four cats have come to snuggle. Normally Girl Cat and Boy Cat Without Tail hate each other but they're comforting each other.

Awww just make sure that he has a flask and sandwiches. What time does his shift start?

@Indoctro don't think it's as simple as don't let her DH go. Treliske is the only main hospital in Cornwall not one of our many idillic beaches

FuzzyPuffling · 17/02/2022 20:55

We've just had a power cut - already :(
Fortunately it's come back on again.

Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters · 17/02/2022 20:56

@HesterShaw1 - you're right there's nothing gained by fretting and DH hasn't been told to have the day off. Solidarity and here's hoping Hamburger Hill isn't too bad. xx

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 17/02/2022 20:56

Well hello neighbour!

Mine would be off tomorrow anyway so I’m looking forward to a lie in (depending on when the wind picks up - BBC and Met Office weather apps say that will be about 2am).

Indoctro · 17/02/2022 20:58
@Indoctro - don't know if he'll go or not but the hospital haven't said for the staff not to go in?
Oh ok sorry didn't realise he was in a hospital, jeez just tell him to be mega careful and avoid anything with trees if he can.

Louisianagumbo · 17/02/2022 21:00

@ofwarren

Where have you seen information about the downgrade? Lancashire County Council still have it down as Amber.

The BBC weather app. It was downgraded this morning from amber to yellow. LCC will still have it as amber in June!
(To be fair, maybe it's just where I live.)

Dianaofthelakeofshiningwaters · 17/02/2022 21:00

Thanks @MinglingFlamingo and @MrsRussell - he usually leaves around 7 so not good timing but will stick to main roads.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 17/02/2022 21:01

@OhYouBadBadKitten

While we will be having hurricane strength gusts, it isn't a hurricane strength storm. The beaufort scale refers to mean wind speed.
This is the thing to remember.

Hoping everyone stays safe.

Have survived being in the Red or Amber area in the last four storms (And still dealing with the fall out from Arwen)

Hope it passes quickly.

LostInWales · 17/02/2022 21:14

Waving to the West Coast Welsh (half of whom appear to live in my village!) fingers crossed we keep the power! Stay strong @SirVixofVixHall 😘

LadyFlumpalot · 17/02/2022 21:14

Met office seems to suggest it's already spinning up for the far tip of Cornwall. Good luck! It's dead calm here in South Somerset, not a single leaf moving.

Doghairismyglitter · 17/02/2022 21:16

Now that the DC’s have gone to bed I can feel my anxiety creeping up. Times like this I find being the only adult in the house very hard 🙁 However finding solidarity and comfort from this thread. Thank you to @OhYouBadBadKitten as always. And nice to know there’s so many people that seemingly live so close to me!
