Storm Eunice

This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

I’m in Dorset and due to travel back to London tomorrow. Will it be bad on the way back in London? Husband thinks I’m being over the top and won’t listen.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 17/02/2022 12:37

Blackeyed what a shame cunning plan 😂😉

poorbuthappy · 17/02/2022 12:38

We have 3 schools to deal with in this house - 1 has confirmed closure, not DHs. Waiting for the other 2 now.

SirVixofVixHall · 17/02/2022 12:38

DTW33
I think that will be an impossible journey tomorrow. Cardiff is in the red zone, and the train would have to go through Swansea, also in red. I assume she is driving to Carmarthen and getting the train from there, or Fishguard ? That road route from Cardigan is really dangerous in very high winds due to the number of trees.

RagzRebooted · 17/02/2022 12:39

@Riverlee

Bedgebury Pinetum (woodland country park) in Kent has announced they will be closed Saturday and Sunday as a precaution.
I'm near there, surely it's Friday they should be closed. We're predicted gusts of 60-70mph at midday tomorrow (60 with met office, 70 with BBC). DH is going to tie down the bin lids, I'll be checking the garden and apart from going into the village at 10am for an appointment, we won't be leaving the house tomorrow.
GloriaSmud · 17/02/2022 12:39

@pussycatunpickingcrossesagain and @Maireas - Crewe and Sheffield will be getting it too. I'd say looking at the wind charts, starting from 9am through 'til 9pm. And I've just looked again at the GFS and Lancashire looks like it will get a blasting from 3pm onwards for a couple of hours.

Just seen the metoffice red warning - looks dreadful tomorrow.

Maireas · 17/02/2022 12:41

Thanks, Gloria - even out of the red zone, the winds are high.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 17/02/2022 12:42

Cheers Gloria I think I heard Matt Taylor (BBC) say it was likely there will be more red warnings - poss NW and SW England.

GloriaSmud · 17/02/2022 12:43

@Sweetpea84 I wouldn't be making that journey - any chance of leaving today or staying longer?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/02/2022 12:44
**@GloriaSmud* and @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER* wait till we get to "G" that storm is earmarked for "Gladys"!
Gladys and Herbert, then.
Or Gertrude and Hubert.

GloriaSmud · 17/02/2022 12:48

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain - He's probably right, possibly North Wales/west coast of Wales as well maybe.

Nomorescreentime · 17/02/2022 12:51

The council have now made a decision to close all schools. The correct decision I think. All that’s left now is to pray for my roof and my fence.

CovidCorvid · 17/02/2022 12:51

It’s bin day tomorrow as well Grin

userxx · 17/02/2022 12:54

@PossiblyDreaming

I’m supposed to be flying on holiday tomorrow morning Sad
Jesus, my stomach lurched at the very thought. I'd be stocking up on anti-sickness tablets.
NothingIsWrong · 17/02/2022 12:54

Got scaffolders out stripping the sheeting to try and minimise the sail effect... going to be a bad one for one of my projects I think - we shall see...

Taketherisk · 17/02/2022 12:54

I have a kids 7ft slide in the garden of my house plus another toddler one, I'm 1.5 hours away and currently in London, should I get ready and drive there to put it away??

I was planning on going Saturday to sort some stuff out. Not sure what to do now.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 17/02/2022 12:56

The secondary school dc1 attends (south Warks) have just sent an email out saying that there may be a short notice closure for tomorrow, due to the predicted wind speeds/storm. We'll be told by 7:30am at the latest if so. Over 1/2 the students rely on buses that set off from 7:45 & travel rural routes. Online learning if they are closed. They were in the situation in Feb 2020 where they were having to send the whole school home from 1pm due to rain & it was, apparently, a logistical nightmare.

BlackeyedSusan · 17/02/2022 12:56

can you ask someone to stick them in a garage for you? /tie them down?

ChickenBeginner · 17/02/2022 12:59

We’re in the Red zone. Just been and collapsed the trampoline, and secured the greenhouse. I am seriously considering letting the chickens sleep in the kitchen tonight!

Polkadotties · 17/02/2022 13:00

We’ve been told to work from home tomorrow

Taketherisk · 17/02/2022 13:00

@blackeyedsusan

I don't have anyone to ask. If I need to go I have to get ready ASAP. I dont know if I should stay put and just go Saturday as planned.

Will a kids slide cause damage, SW and Amber area I've read.

Jetstream · 17/02/2022 13:02

I live in NW Cork, Ireland. We got battered by Ophelia so not phased by these storms. Where I live is repeated hit by storms hitting the SW/S coast. After Ophelia we’d no power for 10 days. The coastline had no power for 2 months.
We are in a Red status area, along with Kerry.
Still hoping the northerly front pushes the SW front just south of us.

Porcupineintherough · 17/02/2022 13:05

@ChickenBeginner my friend's chicken house was blown to the end if her garden by Arwen. I'd def consider whether you could put your chicks in your house or garage or something.

BrieAndChilli · 17/02/2022 13:05

what should we be doing to prepare if we are in red zone?

put away/tie down anthing in garden

Water issues:
fill up bath in case of water supply issues?
get some bottled water

Power issues:
make sure devices charged
charge up power banks for mobiles
check battery supplies
have lanterns/torches handy
know where camp stove and gas
fill up wood basket for log burner

supplies
easy to eat food, snacks etc.
check first aid supplies.

what else should we be doing?

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 17/02/2022 13:05

I'm due to fly into Manchester airport tomorrow morning and then take a train up to North Lancashire Shock. It's my first trip home since the start of the pandemic. I can't believe it now might be scuppered by Eunice Sad.
