Storm Eunice

This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

I was in the red area for storm Arwen a few months ago, it was pretty bad! Roofs flew off, lots of gable ends collapsed, huge trees falling across busy roads and blocked them off. Be careful where you park your car and don't go out.

Covidisdrivingmecrazy · 17/02/2022 12:20

Surely last minute red additions from the met office are pointless? People would already be out about their business if they wait until tomorrow morning?

ThoseFestiveLights · 17/02/2022 12:22

@Furries I think I’ll drive her. School being very ANGRY about absences which will stress her out. I hope they close but I suspect they won’t

CharlieLo · 17/02/2022 12:22
@Puzzledandpissedoff You saw what happened to northern england recently? no power for 10 days or so? for 1000s of people and that wasn't a red warning storm.

Loss of power is what i'm worried about in the red area i'm in.

But of course could largely be mitigated IF power companies cut back trees further away from power lines, atm its 2m, regardless of the height of the tree or its condition but its cheaper not to do this preventative mtce and just put right the damage as an when it occurs.
If you mean Storm Arwen in the north it was a red warning storm.

@OhYouBadBadKitten

I would not ride a horse tomorrow. Some riding instructors seem to have a death wish (personal experience)
I’m supposed to be having a lesson at home tomorrow in an outdoor school surrounded by trees. My instructor is saying it will be fine, horse doesn’t mind the wind. I’m more worried about being squished by trees, it will not be taking place 🤣 Currently charging all our torches and have spent morning clearing away loose pots and furniture .
Maireas · 17/02/2022 12:22

@Lightning020

I have put a couple of bricks on the recycling bin ready for the bin men tomorrow. I really dont want all my recycling to be swept away and end up scattered across the neighbourhood!
Yes, I was chasing mine round the neighbourhood this morning! The entire contents of a large recycling bin!
Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/02/2022 12:23

You saw what happened to northern england recently?

I did, yes, but that wasn't so much to do with the storm as the lack of infrastructure to deal with it

Obviously we don't build massive provision for the sake of rare events, but while everything's relative I really don't count 60mph winds as severe weather, just as I don't regard 2 inches of snow as a catastrophe

Useful clickbait for the media though ...

NeedAHoliday2021 · 17/02/2022 12:23

Trying to make a plan for getting staff to work in the hospital. My work is like a never ending escape room.

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 17/02/2022 12:28

In those winds bricks on top of bins might not be a great idea

ScarlettDarling · 17/02/2022 12:28

@OhYouBadBadKitten and @GloriaSmud , I get terrible weather related anxiety. Am I right in thinking that up here in Newcastle we should be avoiding the worst of the scary winds tomorrow?
I’m also very anxious about rush hour snow...is that looking disruptive right now?

BaconMassive · 17/02/2022 12:28

Red zone = Big coat weather for northerners.

I'm rostered to go in tomorrow (NHS) my manager still expects us in, I'm livid because I'm a single parent and if anything happens to me on the road my daughter doesn't have anyone. I might be being dramatic but an email has just gone out to our Trust employees to say work from home if you can yet we are expected in.

I thought that too...just the right height to go through a car window.😮
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/02/2022 12:31

@GloriaSmud

When the lunchtime forecast was on, there wasn't a weather warning for Friday but when they showed the wind gust chart, I'm not surprised the metoffice issued one this afternoon.

(I did say to DH that Dudley and Eunice sound like an elderly married couple in their 70s!)

80s or 90s, more like! Maybe the next pair of storms could be Darby and Joan.
pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 17/02/2022 12:32
@OhYouBadBadKitten my friend is supposed to be coming from Cardigan in West Wales tomorrow to visit me in Bristol, travelling by train that goes via Cardiff. Do you think she shouldn’t make the journey?
I don't think it will be her choice to make.
I suspect there won't be any trains in that area.

PossiblyDreaming · 17/02/2022 12:33

I’m supposed to be flying on holiday tomorrow morning Sad

Bromse · 17/02/2022 12:35

It's extremely windy here already in Bromley. Things outside have been blown over. I dread to think what it will be like tomorrow here or for those who live in the country.

However, we've been there before and survived. It will soon blow over :-).

SirVixofVixHall · 17/02/2022 12:35

@ThoseFestiveLights

Also in the red zone - my dd walks a mile through woods to get to school. Very anxious!
I would keep her home tomorrow, that does seem too much off a risk. Perhaps her school will close anyway ?

Don't go in if it means leaving your daughter. Seriously. Where do you live?
BlackeyedSusan · 17/02/2022 12:35

Gosh, what a shame she will have diarrhoea tonight. and have to stay off for 48 hours.

Timeturnerplease · 17/02/2022 12:36

Could you store tap water in some empty bottles? That might be a better idea. (Not in lieu of booze, but for the baby!)

That’s an idea….I think we have a couple of water bottles that the 3yo uses for preschool so I’ll preboil some and fill those up, then have Evian as a backup. Thanks!

I don't think trains will be running

Inmyownlittlecorner · 17/02/2022 12:36

Just arrived in Cornwall (Mavagissey) from London for a the weekend. Glad we’re in a hotel. Off to get supplies for our day shut in tomorrow.

CaveMum · 17/02/2022 12:36

@GloriaSmud and @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER wait till we get to "G" that storm is earmarked for "Gladys"!
