Storm Eunice

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2022 11:57

This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

I'm in west Oxfordshire - any thoughts on there?

Next door are having building work done and there's a lot of scaffolding so I hope those guys are busy securing stuff. We need to secure some of our own stuff too, but mainly bins and plant pots. OH fixed the wood shed roof yesterday, a good thing as it was looking pretty dodgy. We were meant to be working outside all day tomorrow, in the high Cotswolds, and are delaying the start of that job. It's a 20 mile drive on country roads and the site is right next to woodland, just thinking about that makes my hair stand on end.

GloriaSmud · 17/02/2022 13:07

@Taketherisk Is the garden sheltered? I think slides are the sort of thing that could get blown over and pushed against fences or hedges and aren't like trampolines/other large things, that get the wind under them and lifted up.

DialsMavis · 17/02/2022 13:09

Im in the SW (not red zone) & have a skip outside our house on our drive that we let a neighbour (lives on another road, but backing onto our access lane) put there. It was supposed to be gone at the beginning of the week.

They are not in and I called the skip company who can't find a record of it. I am hoping his old kitchen doesnt smash my windows.... No good deed goes unpunished!

We also have a load of our building rubbish that didnt fit in our skip that we had asked to put in his if he had room, including an old bath! Wish we had taken it to the tip now instead of waiting around. DH is away so I am going to have to try and lug our stuff down between my kitchen door and wall and hope for the best

grannycake · 17/02/2022 13:11

Just on the BBC that all trains to South Wales won't run tomorrow. All Swansea schools on remote learning

GloriaSmud · 17/02/2022 13:14

@MacavityTheDentistsCat Possibility your flight could end up being diverted to Glasgow/Edinburgh maybe?

@Justanotherobserver - Worst conditions from 9am through 'til 2pm ish. Good idea about delaying the work.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/02/2022 13:15

I'm on the edge of the red zone, just outside Bristol. We have already had damage to a metal footbridge caused by a falling tree as a result of last night's storm. As the crow flies it's only a couple of hundred yards from the house.

SirVixofVixHall · 17/02/2022 13:15

@ChickenBeginner

We’re in the Red zone. Just been and collapsed the trampoline, and secured the greenhouse. I am seriously considering letting the chickens sleep in the kitchen tonight!
My chickens are coming in ! Smile
Lovemusic33 · 17/02/2022 13:17

I have a loose fence panel that’s already flapping around in the wind 😬, I’m not sure there’s much I can do to secure it? My car is one side of it and my shed the other side ( 2ft between the fence and my shed). I have secured everything else, put my bins inside my gate and used bungee ties to tie down the kids.

I have pets that rely on heat (reptiles) so my main worry is losing electric.

Winds already picking up her and neighbour left his bin out, sounds like it’s just blown over or hit my car so I’m going outside to put the bin outside neighbours house.

Same here, west Oxon. Need to turn the trampoline over I think... My husband and I both work in construction and every builder I know is busy securing their sites...
hoochyhag · 17/02/2022 13:18

My brother is in Swansea, he's taking his camper van down to Saundersfoot tomorrow I think he's just teasing me Shock
Much love and best wishes to people in that red zone.

kirinm · 17/02/2022 13:20

My knowledge of what 70mph gusts actually looks like is really poor. I'm in SE London. Is this something to seriously worry about? Is the only reason people aren't taking kids to school because of the risk of flying debris?

Justanotherobserver · 17/02/2022 13:20

@GloriaSmud thanks for that info. Yes, that job (hedge to be laid) will wait a week or so and the owner is fine about it.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 17/02/2022 13:20

used bungee ties to tie down the kids.

Bloody hell, that's drastic!! 😉

mumonthehill · 17/02/2022 13:20

All rail services in Wales look suspended tomorrow.

Justanotherobserver · 17/02/2022 13:22

every builder I know is busy securing their sites

That's reassuring, NothingIsWrong. Hopefully the guys next door are doing the same.

In all seriousness, and if you can get some help as they're heavier than you think it might be better to take the fence panel down and lie it on the lawn?
Saisong · 17/02/2022 13:23

My family on Anglesey live in a marsh that is actually below sea level - protected by a cob sea wall dating from Roman times! I'm always terrified for them when we get this high wind/ high tide scenario. They shrug and think I'm overreacting Confused

ABCDEF1234 · 17/02/2022 13:24

As someone who lives in the North and is surrounded by villages who lost power for 2 weeks after Arwen you will be fine. The massive learnings have happened up here and the responses to the latest storms have been much better and quicker. I have no doubt that the providers down south will currently be talking to those in the North.
Yes charge everything but if the power is off for a while they will put people in hotels and provide food - there were 5 food catering vans within about 4 miles of my home last time.

They can do stuff like this:

Residents fear for their home after neighbour's roof ripped off during storm

www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/storm-malik-destroys-bensham-roof-22920417#ICID=Android_ChronicleNewsApp_AppShare

As well as dislodge slates or ridge tiles, demolish chimneys, break branches off trees or even fell whole trees, embed someone's patio furniture in your car...

Taketherisk · 17/02/2022 13:25

@Gloriasmud

Good point, chance of it flying up in the air is unlikely, I just don't want any broken windows.

I've literally just tested positive for covid so I can't go now even if I wanted to.

Lightning020 · 17/02/2022 13:27

Update: I have gaffa taped the blue bin now and moved the bricks away....

We are in an amber zone but cant be too careful....

Same! I understand that it sounds bad but no idea what it could mean in reality!
CornishGem1975 · 17/02/2022 13:29

We're in amber zone. I've been sitting here thinking what's all the fuss but as the day goes on - more local businesses are closing tomorrow (outdoors leisure etc) and now I am wondering what will happen!

AndSoFinally · 17/02/2022 13:30

Do you have a link to any info on the schools please?

twoshinyspoons · 17/02/2022 13:33

We're rural and I'm worried about getting to work in the morning. BBC says 78mph but Met Office says 59mph which is a big difference.
