This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

@LadyFlumpalot

I've just asked my kids primary what the chances are of school closing as in Somerset the highest winds are expected right at school run time. They just sounded surprised I would suggest it!

@OhYouBadBadKitten - would you expect the red warning to be extended further inland as time goes on today?

I’m keeping my dd home (I have another thread), she travels a hour by taxi (Somerset). I wouldn’t be surprised if schools in or close to the red area take the decision to close, especially if they have staff travelling to get in.

We are not used to seeing such high winds in the SW so it does feel a bit worrying.

There is a cobra meeting later today, I think many will be told not to travel tomorrow unless they really need too and they might discus school closures?

overthethamesfromyou · 17/02/2022 11:47

I'm due at a concert tomorrow night, in Southampton. I really don't want to miss it but it's an hours drive away Confused

Usernumber5253747293 · 17/02/2022 11:47

My area is now on red 🤦‍♀️ Dp is out making sure the fence is secure and everything is tied down outside 😅

SirVixofVixHall · 17/02/2022 11:51

Winds over 90 predicted for here on the met office’s site, in the small hours of the morning. I think I might bring my chickens into the kitchen tonight. In storm Callum the roof of their henhouse blew off, luckily they were all fine and we have tethered the roof now, but I am thinking it would be safer for them to be indoors. There is a rookery near me, I am worrying about the birds.

CrunchyCarrot · 17/02/2022 11:53

Checking in. Just noticed the red warning now over the N.Devon coastline and S.Wales coast. Scary stuff. I'm in the W.Midlands but at altitude so any westerly gales really hit hard. Have been putting away loose garden pots and trays, and hoping the greenhouse will be OK! A lot of big trees around here, too.

Timeturnerplease · 17/02/2022 11:53

My area is warning of possible power/water interruption. 6mo doesn’t have much in the way of milk now (that’s a whole other story) but I assume I can use Evian to make bottles in such a situation? Will grab some bottles from the village shop later - the preschooler has juice in the fridge and DH and I are happy drinking grown up drinks in lieu of water…

thedarkling · 17/02/2022 11:56

@Panicmode1

I'm due to drive from the SW to Kent tomorrow...was going to leave early am, but hoping if I leave closer to lunchtime, the really high winds will be ahead of me....or is this really stupid? Hate travelling via the A303 on Saturdays or Sundays so really want to avoid if possible!!
Us too - well from South Wales to Kent. We're going tonight instead.
Doghairismyglitter · 17/02/2022 11:58

It’s surprising how many people aren’t taking this seriously. House along the road having a new glass conservatory put up today which they’ve said won’t be finished by today so scaffolding will be staying up (is that safe?) neighbours leaving everything outside, my friend is driving from Cornwall to Bath tomorrow morning and thinks me silly for pleading with her not to. Meanwhile I’m getting such bad anxiety about this. Can’t concentrate at work today. @OhYouBadBadKitten is there any ANY chance it might not be as bad as they say or downgraded?? 🙏🏼

BestIsWest · 17/02/2022 12:02

Oh no! We’re in the red zone for tomorrow. We”‘lL have to rethink our plans I think.

StarryGazeyEyes · 17/02/2022 12:04

We're on the edge of the red zone and have just heard the school is going to be closed tomorrow - massively relieved.

Could you store tap water in some empty bottles? That might be a better idea. (Not in lieu of booze, but for the baby!)
CaveMum · 17/02/2022 12:07

Marking my spot to check in on updates. We've got a 10ft trampoline in our garden, it's in a sheltered corner (walls on two sides and tall fence on another) but I've told DH he needs to go out this afternoon and put in the tethering pins we got when we bought it. We're Cambs/Suffolk border and winds are showing as up to 81mph at midday Shock

poorbuthappy · 17/02/2022 12:07

My DH has to drive from SW to Bristol to work. I've pointed out it may not be a good idea, to be hold he has to go in (teacher).
Really hope the school takes the decision out of his hands

Furries · 17/02/2022 12:07

Daft question, but am assuming that it’s the wind (gusts) numbers (rather than wind speed numbers) that are the important ones on the met office site?

North East Essex here and feeling nervous. Heading over to my mum this afternoon to put away/secure things in her garden. Then back here to do the same with my garden. Got one huge tree I’m worried about (neighbours garden, but close to both houses). Pretty sure some fence panels are going to be gone. Worried about roof.

I’m starting to feel very nervous about tomorrow.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/02/2022 12:08

There is going to be a lot of media hype about this storm, it has already started

Don't tell me about the media Hmm I was in Florida during Irma, about 40 miles from its landfall, and you should have heard them carrying on about "the state will be uninhabitable for 6 months" and more

And apart from some roof/powerline damage and a few trees down, much was back to normal within 24 hours

alloalloallo · 17/02/2022 12:12

@Wagsandclaws

We've got 3 horses at home and I won't ride them when it's even slightly windy never mind forecast gusts of up to 70mph, I worry that due to an amber warning that some people and businesses aren't taking this seriously 🤷‍♀️
Same. They’re complete knobs when it’s windy, I’m not even turning out tomorrow morning let alone riding. I don’t want to die.

We’re in the amber area - our local forecaster reckons red (and he’s usually far more accurate) but met office are still at amber. We’re expecting 85 mile an hour winds, with some areas at 100+

ThoseFestiveLights · 17/02/2022 12:12

Also in the red zone - my dd walks a mile through woods to get to school. Very anxious!

Furries · 17/02/2022 12:12

Can’t believe someone has raised north/south divide re these threads and numbers in each post! Naught northern MNers aren’t posting enough, that’s told you 😂

I’ve been reading the Dudley thread, really glad that it ended up not being as bad as first thought for many. Coming after Arwen etc, that must be a relief. My sister counted herself as lucky that they only went without power for 4 days with Arwen - but was still relieved that they escaped power loss with Dudley.

BestIsWest · 17/02/2022 12:13

All our schools are closing tomorrow (Swansea).

toomuchlaundry · 17/02/2022 12:13

If in red zone schools should shut

I am not taking it seriously. But I am old and have heard lots of weather warnings that came to not a lot. I am expecting heavy winds, but I am not panicking.
Alexandra2001 · 17/02/2022 12:14

@Puzzledandpissedoff You saw what happened to northern england recently? no power for 10 days or so? for 1000s of people and that wasn't a red warning storm.

Loss of power is what i'm worried about in the red area i'm in.

But of course could largely be mitigated IF power companies cut back trees further away from power lines, atm its 2m, regardless of the height of the tree or its condition but its cheaper not to do this preventative mtce and just put right the damage as an when it occurs.

Furries · 17/02/2022 12:14

Blimey, that doesn’t sound good. Any chance she can stay at home and study there?
Lightning020 · 17/02/2022 12:16

I have put a couple of bricks on the recycling bin ready for the bin men tomorrow. I really dont want all my recycling to be swept away and end up scattered across the neighbourhood!

Riverlee · 17/02/2022 12:17

Bedgebury Pinetum (woodland country park) in Kent has announced they will be closed Saturday and Sunday as a precaution.
