Storm Eunice

This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

@LadyFlumpalot

Red warning just appeared.
Yikes. Stay safe those of you in the red area
pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 17/02/2022 10:59

@drinkingwineoutofamug
Only been to Macc once...what's the deal with having shit roads to get from one side of the county to the other? 🙄 Although Chester is rubbish too

Was going to mention the Red warning...it's not looking great, is it?

crackofdoom · 17/02/2022 11:01

Oh shitting hell. Wind been upgraded to a max of 89mph tomorrow at school run time. We're about 6-8 miles off the edge of that red zone, according to the map. Waving goodbye to my last work day before half term ☹

Wagsandclaws · 17/02/2022 11:02

Red warning starts 10 miles west of us. As I say we are very high up so of our now to make sure everything is either put away or nailed down.

Checking in. I absolutely hate wind/gales. its so destructive!

Polkadotties · 17/02/2022 11:03

@DrHildegardeLanstrom

DD has a riding lesson tomorrow at 11 (north London). I just asked if they would be cancelling, or what would lead them to cancel, and they said lessons go ahead in all weathers. I am all for that in other types of weather, but I think they are being a bit naive about tomorrow? If I don't think it's safe to drive there we won't be going.
I will not be riding my horse tomorrow
OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/02/2022 11:07

I would not ride a horse tomorrow. Some riding instructors seem to have a death wish (personal experience)

wetotter · 17/02/2022 11:08

Horses, dogs and children are all much flightier in the wind!

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 17/02/2022 11:10

I know! That's why I was surprised

LadyFlumpalot · 17/02/2022 11:14

I've just asked my kids primary what the chances are of school closing as in Somerset the highest winds are expected right at school run time. They just sounded surprised I would suggest it!

@OhYouBadBadKitten - would you expect the red warning to be extended further inland as time goes on today?

Wagsandclaws · 17/02/2022 11:15

We've got 3 horses at home and I won't ride them when it's even slightly windy never mind forecast gusts of up to 70mph, I worry that due to an amber warning that some people and businesses aren't taking this seriously 🤷‍♀️

Doghairismyglitter · 17/02/2022 11:15

Right in the red zone, 3 huge trees in our back garden, genuinely very worried now

MollyQueenOfSocks · 17/02/2022 11:19

I will take absolutely ANY weather. Blistering heat, thundering snow storms, shitty torrential rain. But add fucking wind to ANY of those and it ruins everything.

Fucking hate the wind Angry Better get battening down the hatches and tether our BBQ which falls over at the slightest hint of a breeze Grin

Nomorescreentime · 17/02/2022 11:19

Ah, I’m in the red zone. School is currently risk assessing whether to open tomorrow morning. Also worried about power cuts as we have a bearded dragon that needs to keep warm! Think I’ll go and pick up some heat pads.

Red warnings are only given where there is really high confidence, so I just don't know. I don't think so. I think it is possible that other red warnings may appear at short notice over populated areas of the south and perhaps Midlands, but very, very low confidence on that.

Schools would be idiotic to open in a red warning area and I would not be sending my child, or anyone of us outside the home during a red warning. I actually think that schools in some other areas that have many pupils who rely on public transport should be considering allowing pupils to stay at home. I hope that councils are getting good guidance that they are passing on to headteachers.

We in the middle of the red warning in North Cornwall. Not looking forward to tomorrow. Both DH and I have COVID too so no going out for supplies today either. Think we've got most things covered though - candles, battery packs charged up, enough food in and have a camping stove to heat food upon if needed. DH is going to go out and check the garden furniture is secure. The fence may not survive though!

LilyGlobe · 17/02/2022 11:26

We’re in Hampshire but on the coast. If we go to red warning, we definitely will close the business as we couldn’t get much closer to the sea if we tried but on amber, it’s currently a “should we open?” discussion.
Metoffice have downgraded us to 67mph winds but BBC currently saying 85mph.

I think we’re going to have to see how this develops as the day goes on and make the call later.

I blame the media for this. Every year we get ‘killer storm’ ‘killer snow’ articles which never materialise. I assume a lot of people think tomorrow will be the same.
Wagsandclaws · 17/02/2022 11:37

@Polkadotties couldn't agree more.

Doghairismyglitter · 17/02/2022 11:38

My Tesco online shopping is due tomorrow 10am (no car and miles away from nearest supermarket) I’m wondering if the drivers will even be allowed out in the predicted weather? Lone parent, 2 under 5 DCs so need food, but equally don’t want drivers to be put at risk. Feeling so anxious about tomorrow, I think being the only adult in the house is making it worse 😞

toomuchlaundry · 17/02/2022 11:40

We've just gone into red

liveforsummer · 17/02/2022 11:44

@Doghairismyglitter anyone who can grab you some essentials today that will see you through for a day or 2?

MermaidEyes · 17/02/2022 11:45

I'm in an amber warning area so assuming kids schools will stay open (they hate to close!). Both schools are in built up areas so no risk of falling trees when I take them, but maybe a falling roof tile or two. It's not just risk assessing whether it's safe though, I know a lot of teachers live far away and may not even be able to travel in, so then school will have to shut by default.
